Photographer Amanda Earl attended the Relay for Life at Van Detta Stadium on Saturday. The annual event is a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society and brings together the families of those who have lost loved ones to cancer as well as cancer survivors.

Nicole Voltura has survived nine cancer surgeries and was the "Survivor of Honor" for the event. Her initial diagnosis was in 2011. It was chondroma sarcoma, stage one. She is now fighting a rare autoimmune disease that is caused by her past medical situations. It's terminal. She is a mom, and credits her husband for pulling their family through, keeping the kids strong, and being her constant caregiver.

Different colored beads were handed out at the completion of each lap around the track. Each color represents a different type of cancer.

These signs, signed my local people, will be used in Washington, D.C., at a rally to raise funds and awareness for cancer research.

Walkers finished Genesee Community College's six-hour "mini Relay for Life" last night with a dusk "Luminaria Ceremony" honoring the memory of cancer victims and people lives have been touched by cancer. The bags lining their path contained lit candles and each one was dedicated to a particular individual.

Suzanne Smith, of Batavia, "Luminaria Ceremony" coordinator and cancer survivor, is pictured here with her sons, Richie and Mikey.

This is the college's second annual "mini Relay for Life," which is a partnership between GCC's Wellness Center and the American Cancer Society.  It is also a sort of prelude to the annual "Relay for Life" at Van Detta Stadium, which will be held on Aug. 24.

More pictures:

Kristina Groff, American Cancer Society staff partner, and Michelle Williams, the event chair.

Master of Ceremonies John Kochmanski, who is with the college's radio station.

Jace Little, fundraising specialist and safety officer at College Village, and Tiffany Ralston, who was on the event's public relations committee and serves as a "Living Learning" advisor at College Village.

GCC holds second annual 'mini Relay for Life' https://www.thebatavian.com/events/gcc-holds-second-annual-mini-relay-life/37202 Genesee Community College's Wellness Center and the American Cancer Society are teaming up for the college's second annual "mini Relay for Life," which will be held Wednesday, May 1 from 3 until 9 p.m.

The theme of the race is "Be Your Own Superhero."  It will begin at the Student Union, at One College Road in Batavia.

The race can be run or walked, and will feature teams that run or walk in segments.  A "Survivor's Lap," in which cancer survivors will be invited to circle the track, will precede each race, and a "Luminaria Ceremony" honoring the memory of cancer victims as well as the living whose lives have been touched by cancer, will close the event at dusk.

White, sand-filled bags with candles set in them will light the relay's path. Each bag represents someone affected by cancer.

Admission is $10 per person and free for cancer survivors.  For more information, contact Michelle Williams at sixxpup1@yahoo.com. To make a donation, go to relayforlife.org/minigccny

Making Batavia the color purple for a purpose https://www.thebatavian.com/billie-owens/making-batavia-color-purple-purpose/26707 The American Cancer Society will celebrate the Relay For Life season by painting Batavia purple starting tommorrow. Volunteers will be hanging purple ribbons down Main Street, and have invited Main Street businesses to decorate their storefront windows in an effort to promote Relay For Life of Batavia.

The event is an opportunity for the community to help the American Cancer Society create a world with less cancer and more birthdays by helping people stay well, by helping people get well, by finding cures and by fighting back.

Relay For Life of Batavia will take place noon to midnight on Saturday, July 9 at Vandetta Stadium, 120 Richmond Ave.

Individuals and teams camp out, eat, dance and take turns walking or running around a track “relay” style to raise funds to fight cancer. At nightfall, participants light hundreds of luminaria candles around the track in a touching ceremony honoring cancer survivors as well as paying tribute to those lost to the disease.

To join Relay For Life, call 1-800-227-2345 or visit www.relayforlife.org/bataviany

The American Cancer Society is the largest non-governmental investor in cancer research, contributing more than $3.4 billion, we turn what we know about cancer into what we do. As a result, more than 11 million people in America who have had cancer and countless more who have avoided it will be celebrating birthdays this year.

'Relay for Life' at Van Detta Stadium https://www.thebatavian.com/events/relay-life-van-detta-stadium/18409 The American Cancer Society's "Relay for Life" comes to Batavia on Friday, Aug. 13! This is an overnight event and will take place from 6 p.m. until 6 a.m. the following morning.

It's at the Van Detta Stadium track, at 120 Richmond Ave. in Batavia, and is open to walkers and runners of all ages.

"Relay for Life" will involve teams of people or individuals running or walking around the track. Everyone is encouraged to participate, even if they cannot stay for the whole thing. However, each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times for the duration of the event (since "cancer never sleeps").

The overall event will consist of three parts -- a "Survivors Lap" in which those who have lived through the ordeal of cancer circle the track to celebrate their shared victory, a "Luminaria Ceremony" commemorating loved ones lost to cancer, and a "Fight Back Ceremony" in which participants make a personal commitment to fight cancer.

There is a fee of $10 per person, due at the time of registration. For more information, call Stacie Waddell at 1-800-227-2345 or visit relayforlife.org/bataviany.
