Sectional softball: Class A2 Final, Batavia 3 Pittsford Sutherland 12

By Steve Ognibene

A disappointed Batavia bench overlooks the final moments ending their season and chance of a sectional crown, losing to class A2 rivals Pittsford Sutherland 12-3 at SUNY Brockport yesterday afternoon. This is the second time the Knights have beat the lady Devils in back-to-back seasons.

After the first inning game tied 1-1, Sutherland took the lead in the bottom of the third 4-1, which left Batavia craving for some runs early on.

Top of the fourth inning, Batavia looking to tie the game, in scoring position with bases loaded and only one out. Sutherland sophomore pitcher Grace Fanset came up big getting the next two outs.

Pitcher Fancet (pictured below) hit a three-run home run with other teammates scoring. Score after four innings: 11-1 Sutherland. Lady Devils scored two runs in the top of the fifth inning, then stranded the bases loaded. Batavia left 12 runners on base for the game.

Final 12-3. First year Head Coach James Fazio commented after the game:

"The Batavia High School Softball Team just finished their season falling to Pittsford Sutherland in the Class A2 Sectional Finals. Batavia began their season down in Myrtle Beach (S.C.) and played a very difficult schedule to get ready for sectional play.

"Batavia started off their season at 3-5, but then won eight out of their next 10 games and were playing their best softball of the season heading into sectionals. Batavia won the Pembroke tournament recently and was named Co-champions of Monroe County Division 4 with a 7-1 record with their only loss coming to HFL, who then they would beat in the first round of sectionals.

"Batavia then defeated #1 seed SOTA in the semifinals before losing to Sutherland. The team graduates seniors Kaitlin Ange, Alaina Bowman, Bri Janes, and Taylor Stefaniak and those players will be greatly missed. The team has a number of returning players and players up from Junior Varsity that will form a very competitive team next season."

Genesee County to host several softball and baseball tournaments over next five weeks

By Howard B. Owens

Press release:

Over the next five weekends (through June 24) Genesee County will host nearly 20,000 baseball and softball players, coaches, families and fans at the eighth Annual Darien Lake Tournament Series. The tournament, which kicks off this weekend, is produced by Pitch ‘n' Hit Events and teams will play at numerous ball fields throughout Genesee County.

The tournament will bring 400 teams to Genesee County from throughout the Northeast and Canada playing both baseball and fast-pitch softball with ages of the players ranging from 10 to 18 years old.

The Genesee County Chamber of Commerce estimates that the influx of visitors from this event is expected to create more than a $1.5 million economic impact through hotel stays, dining, shopping and incidental spending.

The Chamber provided Pitch ‘n' Hit with thousands of Genesee County Dining Guides and Visitor Coupons to be included in the welcome packets for each player and their family.

With Memorial Day weekend being the unofficial kick-off of the summer travel season, the Chamber also begins extended Visitor Center hours on Friday, May 25th. More than 30 visitor center volunteers who help to staff the center in peak-season were welcomed back with an orientation breakfast at Terry Hills Restaurant & Banquet Facility earlier this week.

The Visitor Center will remain open with extended evening and weekend hours through Labor Day, while the vestibule remains open to visitors 24/7 with access to key area maps and brochures.

Batavia Lady Blue Devils delivered 17 hits to lead them to victory yesterday afternoon and defeat host Honeoye Falls-Lima 10-5 in the class A2 quarter final matchup.

The Batavia High School Varsity Softball Team is pictured above donating a check of $1,000 to board members of Genesee Cancer Assistance.

The team raised $3,000 during a Bat-a-thon fundraising event called "Strike Out Cancer" on March 24th at Batavia High School. It was a priority this season as a way to contribute to a local charity.

"This was something our team and program wanted to do to make a difference in our community," said first-year Coach Jim Fazio. "Our girls went above and beyond in all of our fundraising efforts and this seemed like a perfect place to show our support."

Head Coach Jim Fazio presents the check to Board Member Nickie Fazio, who coordinates the Simply Beautiful program, and office manager Teresa Potrzebowski of Genesee Cancer Assistance.

Notre Dame names new softball coach

By Howard B. Owens

Press release:

Notre Dame announces the hiring of Tim Frappa of Orchard Park as their new Varsity Softball Coach. He replaces Michelle Panepento who decided not to return in order to spend more time with her family. His impressive resume, love of teaching the game of softball and his personality led to his selection from an impressive group of applicants.

Tim has been an extremely successful travel softball coach in the Buffalo area for the past 10 years. For the last three seasons, he coached the NY Inferno 16U and 18U college showcase teams where he has helped players realize their goal of playing college softball. He is recognized as an excellent teacher of fundamentals and is especially strong in the development of pitchers including two daughters who went on to pitch in college.

Coach Frappa, who  is the Founder and President of Torino Mosaic Flooring, is excited about the opportunity to coach the young ladies of Notre Dame softball and is looking forward to the challenge of building on the success the program has enjoyed in recent years.

Cougars Softball Team Signs Cole

By Howard B. Owens

Press release:

The Genesee Community College softball team announced the signing of Brittany Cole to its 2018 roster.

The high school senior from Baldwinsville brings her pitching talents to the Cougars while she pursues a liberal arts degree at GCC.

Cole plays the game year-round and her elite summer team has captured the Auburn Tournament in back-to-back seasons in part due to her pitching prowess.

"I'm excited to have Brittany on board as she will solidify our pitching," Cougars head softball coach Taylor Maurer said.

Genesee looks to improve upon a solid 19-16 season from a year ago that saw the Cougars advance all the way to the regional championship. This year's season begins again in South Carolina with a series of games against southern teams from March 10-15.

The concession booth is a fundraiser to help the team pay for a trip to a softball camp in Myrtle Beach, S.C., in March. The camp will allow the team to start practices and see game action, helping them prepare for the season, while most of the team's spring competition is still stuck in frigid WNY.

T.F. Brown's snags championship in men's softball at Kibbe Park

By James Burns

untitled_shoot-0706.jpg

Photos by Jim Burns.

Write up by Mike Jamil:

A beautiful night finally for softball at Kibbe Park.

Number 6 seed TF Brown's Commissioner's Crew three-peats, pulling off the upset, defeating #4 seeded home team Fava Brothers Lawn Care 14-11.

Fava Brothers Lawn Care had won the two prior matchups (both regular season) but choked away the championship honors in the third contest.

The losing team did receive a participation trophy that states "Congratulations On Another Failed Season," since we're not so worried about soft feelings in The New Batavia Softball League. At least I'm personally not. Play better or you're eliminated. No hedge/handicap here.

The gag gift participation trophy wasn't all they got. They got two complimentary cans of corn as well, which was a symbol representing their crunch time hitting. So they did not go home empty-handed.

Very worthy opponents and lots of absolutely great people on that Fava Brothers team.

Lots of friendly bragging rights needed.

Everybody contributed and played their role for the winning team. Everybody was important and needed.

Members of the championship team TF Brown's Commissioner's Crew are Captain Mike Jamil, Keith Oklevitch, Austin Oklevitch, Chris Densmore, Alex Jarvela, Justin Cooper, Dan Dioguardi, Stefan Krna, Keith Hammond, and Koko Irvin. Ronnie Sumeriski, the normal left fielder, and Michael Greene the normal right fielder, were unable to make it to the big game but were assets all season long as well as the first night of the playoffs.

Forced the commissioner to play defense which can be a very bad idea at times. Very gritty, clutch bunch.

That concludes the 2017 Thursday Batavia Men's Spring/Summer Softball League. Was a great group of people from the teams top to bottom. Very evenly matched. We don't care to be like other leagues. We're Batavia Softball. Signing off.

T.F. Brown's wins co-ed softball championship at Kibbe Park

By Steve Ognibene

3k5b9643.jpg

T.F. Brown's Blind Squirrels beat Wii Not Fit 12-11 last night to take the Co-Ed Softball Championship at Kibbe Park.

Mike Jamil provided the game summary:

Eddie Davis' big game was not enough as Wii Not Fit loses in the bottom of the seventh inning by one, as Lee hits walk-off opposite field single.

Everybody contributed for the T.F. Brown's Blind Squirrels, that's for certain.

Fava gets his first ever title in any league anywhere, breaking his mush curse.

Jamil finally breaks his coed curse.

Wii Not Fit, though they always look like they're overmatched and the underdogs, keep that grit, which got them to a #2 seed regular season although preseason picked to be no higher than the #5 seed.

An evenly matched game throughout with a muckyish outfield -- left by the flood at Kibbe Park not even a week prior -- wasn't keeping these two teams filled with non-prima donnas off the field.

Davis burned Jamil badly in the first, which led to his immediate benching, costing the team with pathetic fielding. Safe to say he redeemed himself at the plate, returning the favor by not being dead weight, thank God. (Corny third-person talk since I'm the one writing this.)

Over 10 hours of HAND rolling and almost 72 hours of sun made this night possible.

Couldn't believe the number of spectators tonight even.

Members of the winning team are Ronnie Sumeriski, Mike Jamil, Pat Fava, Jackie Janes, Jarad Lee, Heidi Dempsey, Mike Badami, Chester Harrington, Ariel Ford, Chelsey Ruzewski, Lacy Leto, as well as Kirsten Rowland and Jerry Dykstra, who were unable to participate in the title game but were vital cogs all season long for the T.F. Brown's Blind Squirrels.

The New Batavia Softball League's Thursday Night Men's League Final Regular Season Standings and Playoff Matchups for Thursday July 13th at Kibbe Park...

Thursday Night Men's League Final Standings and Playoff Schedule plus scenarios. Crazy how tight this league also was. Tie Breakers head to head literally were all by 1 run between the top 5 teams including a tie head to head between Cummings/Lee and TF Browns Master Batters who both defeated each other by 10 runs during the season and had to go to Run Differential to determine who even had that tie breaker had it came down to both of them finishing at 6-4. U.S.P.S narrowly defeated Cummings/Lee and the head to head split between Fava Brothers Lawn Care and TF Browns Beers N Bombs was by 1 run. Game 1 TF Browns Beers N Bombs won by 2 and Game 2, Fava Brothers Lawn Care won by 1. The 3 seed has been a curse in recent history both nights Wednesdays and Thursdays. The reigning champs are praying that continues.

1. U.S.P.S (7-3) (Runs For 115, Runs Against 93) Clinched the #1 seed because they won the tie breaker head to head against Cummings/Lee. Will be home team through out playoffs. Earned first dibs on time of 2nd round game and selected 8pm. Will play the lowest remaining seed at 8pm.

2. Cummings/Lee (7-3) (Runs For 181, Runs Against 114)  Will play highest remaining seed at 9pm.

3. TF Browns Beers N Bombs (6-4) (Runs For 130, Runs Against 101) three way tie which they won the head to head tie breaker against Fava Brothers Lawn Care although they lost the head to head tie to TF Browns Master Batters. Because Fava Brothers Lawn Care owns the tie breaker head to head against TF Browns Master Batters which own the head to head tie breaker on TF Browns Beers N Bombs. Since head to head cannot determine this combination at a three way tie we go to the next tie breaker which is Run Differential. They win this tie breaker with a run differential of +29. (For the newbies to sports and don't understand how tie breakers are designed to work lol) Earned first dibs for time selection round 1 and selected 7pm. Will be home team against TF Browns Commisioners Crew at 7pm first round. If they win will play at 9pm against Cummings/Lee.

4. Fava Brothers Lawn Care (6-4) (Runs For 121, Runs Against 116) Read above how they finished 4th. Lost Run Differential to TF Browns Beers N Bombs but won Run Differential to TF Browns Master Batters with a +5 to -15. Will play at 6pm home team vs TF Browns Master Batters. If they win could play at 8pm against U.S.P.S if TF Browns Beers N Bombs wins round 1. Can play at 9pm against Cummings/Lee if TF Browns Beers N Bombs loses to TF Browns Commissioner's Crew.

5. TF Browns Master Batters (6-4) (Runs For 107, Runs Against 122) Again read above how they claimed the 5 seed with the three way tie. Lost Run Differential to both TF Browns Beers N Bombs and Fava Brothers Lawn Care with a -15. Will play at 6pm as the away team against Fava Brothers Lawn Care. If they win and TF Browns Beers N Bombs win they will play at 8pm against U.S.P.S. If they win and TF Browns Commissioner's Crew wins, they will play at 9pm against Cummings/Lee.

6. TF Browns Commissioner's Crew aka 2 time reigning champions (3-7) (Runs For 120, Runs Against 138) Will play at 7pm as the away team against TF Browns Beers N Bombs since they didn't do themselves any favors the last 2 weeks and neither did the other teams lol. If they win will play at 8pm in a rematch of the title game last season against U.S.P.S

7. Balls Deep (0-10) (Runs For 71, Runs Against 157) Eliminated

Game Recap-
As you can see this was an 8-8 game through 4 full innings. 10-9 home team after five and a half innings as Rascoe drills a shot deep to right center driving in Coffta. Sumeriski and Jamil respond taking advantage of the base runners in the bottom half of the 6th inning to pull away in this game. Highlight of the game Whitey turns back the hands of time and makes a what we'll say was running while leaping and extending to make a sportscenter play of the week. Was a great catch to say the least. The TF Browns Blind Squirrels (2-3) will have their double header next week as they first take on The Misfits (1-4) at 6pm followed by 97 Rock (4-1) at 7pm. Game Recap-
The biggest surprise by far belong to The Gallaghers. Off to a 4-2 start and not only overcame being -$4200 moneyline Las Vegas underdogs for the victory, they only needed 4 innings of at bats to Allstate's 5 at bats to win via mercy rule. Maverick and Sauka drive in 3 runs a piece in the 15 run second inning combining to hit 4-4. That was just 1 inning alone. I don't speak for everybody but I certainly would have had my money on Golliath not David in this matchup. The Gallaghers (4-2) will be against Wii Not Fit (3-3) at 8pm while Andrew Steinbrenner's Allstate (5-1) take on T.N.B.S.L Slapnut Magoos (0-5) at 9pm Wednesday at Kibbe Park.

Game Recap-
This game was looking to get out of hand after the wheels were appearing to fall off fast for Wii Not Fit giving up a 10 run outburst in the second inning by Andrew Steinbrenner's Allstate who were extra motivated in lieu of avenging their stunning loss the game prior. Huertas continues his hot bat as Maurer's RBI total may have passed Joe Mauer's total in the majors which he gets paid to do. Wii Not Fit doesn't give up and like they do often, making the game suspenseful and close. Lots of excitement in this one. Facing adversity nearly being mercied down 14-5 after 5 at bats, the away team scores 6 in the 6th capped off by a Dwyer homer. Davis would cap off another 6 run inning in the top half of the 7th with a homer which would land Wii Not Fit the 17-14 lead with the home team up to bat trailing. Single, double, single, single, and then a walk off single by Thomas all in succession later Allstate wins 18-17. Andrew Steinbrenner's Allstate (5-1) will be facing T.N.B.S.L Slapnut Magoos (0-5) at 9pm while Wii Not Fit (3-3) will be against The Gallaghers (4-2) at 8pm in a week 1 rematch which seen Wii Not Fit win 8-7.

Game Recap-
The Misfits do their best to stop the bleeding as 97 Rock gets all 10 batters to the plate in innings 1 and 2. Can't single any one player out for 97 Rock as they produced with a well balanced attack 1-10. For The Misfits it wasn't all bad as they did get to participate in over 6 innings here. Pirincci, Dioguardi, Weibel, and Ayers all knock in a run as Whitehead and McGill continue to impress in the field. The Misfits (1-4) move on from this and they will match up against the TF Browns Blind Squirrels (2-3) at 6pm weather permitting. 97 Rock (4-1) will also play the TF Browns Blind Squirrels (2-3) but at 7pm.

Game Recap-
As you can tell from the box score all it takes is one melt down inning to lose a game. Unfortunately for the TF Browns Commissioner's Crew the third inning happened as the home team drops an 11 spot hitting the ball all over the place. TF Browns Beers N Bombs scored 7 runs before even recording an out. In the bottom half of the sixth inning Red McDonald surprises as he delivers a power shot driving in some insurance runs. The away team would be shut down silently in the top of the seventh and the game ends as the home team doesn't even need last ups to seal the deal in this game. TF Browns Commissioners Crew (2-3) will face U.S.P.S (2-2) at 9pm at Kibbe Park. TF Browns Beers N Bombs (2-1) will first face the TF Browns Master Batters (1-3) at 6pm at Kibbe Park, followed by facing Cummings/Lee (4-0) also at Kibbe Park starting at 7pm. Week 1 rained out game is getting made up here.

Game Recap-
Pitcher for U.S.P.S. Jim Bieber strikes out 3 Fava Brother batters, Neth makes a couple circus catches while still learning how to hit, and Lehner drives in 3, but it wasn't enough as Fava Brothers Lawn Care come through in the bottom of the 7th when Varnell delivers a leadoff triple. They would intentionally walk Badami to face Dumuhoski. Dumo delivers a walk off single to steal the victory. Fava Brothers Lawn Care (3-1) will be at Williams Park starting at 6pm Thursday against Balls Deep (0-4). U.S.P.S. (2-2) has a double header first against Cummings/Lee (4-0) at 8pm held at Kibbe Park. Followed by the 9pm game at Kibbe Park against TF Browns Commissioner's Crew (2-3).

Game Recap-
Not to take away from N. Cummings who may never have a perfect box score at the plate again, but the women of 97 Rock really went to work. Batting 6-14 (.429 average) and driving in 5 big runs I believe was the difference in this game. Stout, D. Cervone, K. Cervone, K. Cervone, and J. Quinn all went to work. Takes a lot matching the bat of E. Davis this season who every time box scores are tallied has a full line. Krna starts off the 4th inning with a double and as they would bat around he would deliver a single later in the inning to drive in a run tying the game 10-10. Kim, Jenna, and Nate all score in the 5th to give 97 Rock a 13-10 lead which they would hold onto at the conclusion of the game. 97 Rock (3-1) takes their 3 game winning streak with them next week against The Misfits (1-3) at 9pm. Wii Not Fit (2-2) who has made every game suspenseful faces Andrew Steinbrenner's Allstate (4-0) at 8pm weather permitting...

Game Recap-
Well this game started out promising for the misfits as B. Whitehead leads off the game with a single and would later score on a Pirincci rbi single. The Misfits would only give up (my fingers are burning typing this) a leadoff home run to B. Spurling in the bottom half of the 1st inning as the game was tied concluding the inning at one. Unfortunately the wheels would fall off for The Misfits following. Thankfully the wheels stay on the 4 Wheeler Weibel provides to drag rake the infield. Huertas and Lazik continue pounding the ball, bringing many base runners across home plate. Andrew Steinbrenner's Allstate (4-0) will have their double header next Wednesday starting at 7pm against The Gallaghers (3-2) then at 8pm against Wii Not Fit (2-2). The Misfits (1-3) will face 97 Rock (3-1) at 9pm if we can get some nice weather this year...

Game Recap-
Wii Not Fit gets back on track after losing the first game of their double header slapping another loss to the record of T.N.B.S.L. Slapnut Magoos. Davis goes 6-7 with 5 rbi in the twin cap and Chinn really delivers in this game knocking in an rbi in 3 out of her 4 at bats. The bright spot for the winless magoos at least is that they lasted 7 innings in this one, showing massive improvement. Bad news is the gentleman need their ladies to pick it up and help them out. 0-12 won't help win many games. T.N.B.S.L. Slapnut Magoos (0-4) will look for their first win against a team not doing much better than them, the TF Browns Blind Squirrels (1-3) at 6pm. Wii Not Fit (3-2) will look to carry over their momentum against Andrew Steinbrenner's Allstate (4-0) who have their own momentum currently going. That game is scheduled for 8pm if the weather allows it...

Game Recap-
Not one single player on either team in this game fell short of driving in at least 1 run during this monster scoring game. The Gallaghers came out full throttle on the verge of ending this game early via mercy. Building a 16-1 lead. Every single player in the first 2 innings for The Gallaghers crossed the plate, including Tom Sauka who scored three times across those two innings. TF Browns Blind Squirrels would extend the game longer as they located their gloves and remembered how to swing a bat including K. Rowland with an impressive line drive RBI single lazering past the third baseman in the air, scoring seven in the third inning and shutting out the away team for three straight innings. TJ Sauka would knock in 2 runs top of the 7th inning to extend the lead to 9 runs after J. Lee walks J. Vasi just prior with 2 outs to load the bases. Home team with their last ups trailing by 9 has M. Jamil lead off the inning with an opposite field home run after being called out by teammate R. Sumeriski who said that they would follow his lead good or bad. The team responds and bats around to give Jamil a chance to tie the game with a runner on 2nd base with 2 outs. Garbage hit fly ball to left center ends the game as TJ Sauka catches the can of corn sealing the deal and the comeback attempt falls short for the home team. The Gallaghers (3-2) will take on Andrew Steinbrenner's Allstate (4-0) at 7pmWednesday night while the struggling TF Browns Blind Squirrels (1-3) square up against The New Batavia Softball League's Slaput Magoos (0-4) at 6pm weather permitting. The good news for both those teams are is somebody will come out with a victory as T.N.B.S.L. Slapnut Magoos are on a 4 game losing streak, while the TF Browns Blind Squirrels carry their own impressive 3 game losing streak.
