Batavia secures opener over Pittsford Sutherland 14-8

By Steve Ognibene

a76y6697.jpg

The Batavia Lady Blue Devils got some revenge over Monroe County nemesis Pittsford Sutherland, defeating the Knights 14-8 in the opener for both teams in Pittsford.

Batavia jumped out early in the top of the first inning as Bryn Wormley led off the game with a sharp single to left, while Ryann Stefaniak had an infield single. Maiya Reinhart's RBI single put Batavia on top with the lead they would never relinquish.

The lead grew to 5-0 as Wormley, Stefaniak and Mackenzie Reigle had key hits in a three run third inning. Irelyn Curry scattered 11 hits in going the distance for Batavia with five strikeouts to pick up the win in the circle.

Sutherland got within 5-3 in the fourth inning, but Batavia scored a single run in the fifth and tacked on four runs in the sixth inning to lead 10-3.

Sutherland would not go away quietly as they drew within four at 10-6, but the Devils added four big insurance runs in the seventh to take a commanding lead. Sutherland would score two in the seventh to account for the final margin.

For Batavia, Wormley, Stefaniak (2 RBI) and Reinhart (3 RBI) each had multiple hits, while Alyssa Ognibene had a clutch base hit. Eighth-grader Allessandra Warner had a fine defensive game behind the plate for the Lady Devils, who start the season 1-0.

Batavia’s next game is away at Honeoye-Falls Lima tomorrow at 4:30 p.m.

Press release:

Batavia Girls Fastpitch Softball (BGFS) recently received a very generous grant from the Dick’s Sporting Goods Foundation for $1,000. BGFS is actively fundraising to be able to purchase and install a new scoreboard at Lions Park, home field of the Batavia Stingers, and this grant will definitely help in the effort.

BGFS fields teams, known as the Batavia Stingers, at the 10u, 12u and 15u level in a Genesee Region Fastpitch Softball League.  While only in our third year of existence, BGFS has seen continued growth and has big plans for improving the field at Lions Park over the next couple of years.

BGFS is very grateful to the Dick’s Sporting Goods Foundation for not only this generous grant but for the partnership that the Batavia Dick’s Sporting Goods Store has formed with the Stingers the past two seasons. The Dick’s Sporting Goods Foundation and Batavia Dick’s Sporting Goods Store see the important role BGFS plays in providing young ladies a healthy and fun outlet in the community and has pledged to help BGFS reach its full potential.

There will be an in-person registration at the Batavia Dick’s Sporting Goods Store on Saturday, Feb. 9th, from 10 a.m..- 2 p.m.  Parents interested in signing up their daughters and learning about our program are encouraged to attend. More information about BGFS can be found by checking out our Facebook page, Batavia Girls Fastpitch Softball, which has a link to our online registration site.

Thank you to the Dick’s Sporting Goods Foundation and our Batavia Dick’s Sporting Goods Store not only for the generous grant but for promoting and supporting youth sports in our community.

Sectional softball: Class A2 Final, Batavia 3 Pittsford Sutherland 12

By Steve Ognibene

098a7073.jpg

A disappointed Batavia bench overlooks the final moments ending their season and chance of a sectional crown, losing to class A2 rivals Pittsford Sutherland 12-3 at SUNY Brockport yesterday afternoon. This is the second time the Knights have beat the lady Devils in back-to-back seasons.

After the first inning game tied 1-1, Sutherland took the lead in the bottom of the third 4-1, which left Batavia craving for some runs early on.

Top of the fourth inning, Batavia looking to tie the game, in scoring position with bases loaded and only one out. Sutherland sophomore pitcher Grace Fanset came up big getting the next two outs.

Pitcher Fancet (pictured below) hit a three-run home run with other teammates scoring. Score after four innings: 11-1 Sutherland. Lady Devils scored two runs in the top of the fifth inning, then stranded the bases loaded. Batavia left 12 runners on base for the game.

Final 12-3. First year Head Coach James Fazio commented after the game:

"The Batavia High School Softball Team just finished their season falling to Pittsford Sutherland in the Class A2 Sectional Finals. Batavia began their season down in Myrtle Beach (S.C.) and played a very difficult schedule to get ready for sectional play.

"Batavia started off their season at 3-5, but then won eight out of their next 10 games and were playing their best softball of the season heading into sectionals. Batavia won the Pembroke tournament recently and was named Co-champions of Monroe County Division 4 with a 7-1 record with their only loss coming to HFL, who then they would beat in the first round of sectionals.

"Batavia then defeated #1 seed SOTA in the semifinals before losing to Sutherland. The team graduates seniors Kaitlin Ange, Alaina Bowman, Bri Janes, and Taylor Stefaniak and those players will be greatly missed. The team has a number of returning players and players up from Junior Varsity that will form a very competitive team next season."

By Howard B. Owens

Press release:

Over the next five weekends (through June 24) Genesee County will host nearly 20,000 baseball and softball players, coaches, families and fans at the eighth Annual Darien Lake Tournament Series. The tournament, which kicks off this weekend, is produced by Pitch ‘n' Hit Events and teams will play at numerous ball fields throughout Genesee County.

The tournament will bring 400 teams to Genesee County from throughout the Northeast and Canada playing both baseball and fast-pitch softball with ages of the players ranging from 10 to 18 years old.

The Genesee County Chamber of Commerce estimates that the influx of visitors from this event is expected to create more than a $1.5 million economic impact through hotel stays, dining, shopping and incidental spending.

The Chamber provided Pitch ‘n' Hit with thousands of Genesee County Dining Guides and Visitor Coupons to be included in the welcome packets for each player and their family.

With Memorial Day weekend being the unofficial kick-off of the summer travel season, the Chamber also begins extended Visitor Center hours on Friday, May 25th. By Howard B. Owens

Press release:

Notre Dame announces the hiring of Tim Frappa of Orchard Park as their new Varsity Softball Coach. He replaces Michelle Panepento who decided not to return in order to spend more time with her family. His impressive resume, love of teaching the game of softball and his personality led to his selection from an impressive group of applicants.

Tim has been an extremely successful travel softball coach in the Buffalo area for the past 10 years. For the last three seasons, he coached the NY Inferno 16U and 18U college showcase teams where he has helped players realize their goal of playing college softball. Cougars Softball Team Signs Cole

By Howard B. Owens

Press release:

The Genesee Community College softball team announced the signing of Brittany Cole to its 2018 roster.

The high school senior from Baldwinsville brings her pitching talents to the Cougars while she pursues a liberal arts degree at GCC.

Cole plays the game year-round and her elite summer team has captured the Auburn Tournament in back-to-back seasons in part due to her pitching prowess.

"I'm excited to have Brittany on board as she will solidify our pitching," Cougars head softball coach Taylor Maurer said.

Genesee looks to improve upon a solid 19-16 season from a year ago that saw the Cougars advance all the way to the regional championship. This year's season begins again in South Carolina with a series of games against southern teams from March 10-15.

T.F. Brown's snags championship in men's softball at Kibbe Park

By James Burns

untitled_shoot-0706.jpg

Photos by Jim Burns.

Write up by Mike Jamil:

A beautiful night finally for softball at Kibbe Park.

Number 6 seed TF Brown's Commissioner's Crew three-peats, pulling off the upset, defeating #4 seeded home team Fava Brothers Lawn Care 14-11.

Fava Brothers Lawn Care had won the two prior matchups (both regular season) but choked away the championship honors in the third contest.

The losing team did receive a participation trophy that states "Congratulations On Another Failed Season," since we're not so worried about soft feelings in The New Batavia Softball League. At least I'm personally not. Play better or you're eliminated. No hedge/handicap here.

The gag gift participation trophy wasn't all they got. They got two complimentary cans of corn as well, which was a symbol representing their crunch time hitting. So they did not go home empty-handed.

Very worthy opponents and lots of absolutely great people on that Fava Brothers team.

Lots of friendly bragging rights needed.

Everybody contributed and played their role for the winning team. Everybody was important and needed.

Members of the championship team TF Brown's Commissioner's Crew are Captain Mike Jamil, Keith Oklevitch, Austin Oklevitch, Chris Densmore, Alex Jarvela, Justin Cooper, Dan Dioguardi, Stefan Krna, Keith Hammond, and Koko Irvin. Ronnie Sumeriski, the normal left fielder, and Michael Greene the normal right fielder, were unable to make it to the big game but were assets all season long as well as the first night of the playoffs.

Forced the commissioner to play defense which can be a very bad idea at times. Very gritty, clutch bunch.

That concludes the 2017 Thursday Batavia Men's Spring/Summer Softball League. Was a great group of people from the teams top to bottom. Very evenly matched. We don't care to be like other leagues. We're Batavia Softball. Signing off.

T.F. Brown's wins co-ed softball championship at Kibbe Park

By Steve Ognibene

3k5b9643.jpg

T.F. Brown's Blind Squirrels beat Wii Not Fit 12-11 last night to take the Co-Ed Softball Championship at Kibbe Park.

Mike Jamil provided the game summary:

Eddie Davis' big game was not enough as Wii Not Fit loses in the bottom of the seventh inning by one, as Lee hits walk-off opposite field single.

Everybody contributed for the T.F. Brown's Blind Squirrels, that's for certain.

Fava gets his first ever title in any league anywhere, breaking his mush curse.

Jamil finally breaks his coed curse.

Wii Not Fit, though they always look like they're overmatched and the underdogs, keep that grit, which got them to a #2 seed regular season although preseason picked to be no higher than the #5 seed.

An evenly matched game throughout with a muckyish outfield -- left by the flood at Kibbe Park not even a week prior -- wasn't keeping these two teams filled with non-prima donnas off the field.

Davis burned Jamil badly in the first, which led to his immediate benching, costing the team with pathetic fielding. Safe to say he redeemed himself at the plate, returning the favor by not being dead weight, thank God. (Corny third-person talk since I'm the one writing this.)

Over 10 hours of HAND rolling and almost 72 hours of sun made this night possible.

Couldn't believe the number of spectators tonight even.

Members of the winning team are Ronnie Sumeriski, Mike Jamil, Pat Fava, Jackie Janes, Jarad Lee, Heidi Dempsey, Mike Badami, Chester Harrington, Ariel Ford, Chelsey Ruzewski, Lacy Leto, as well as Kirsten Rowland and Jerry Dykstra, who were unable to participate in the title game but were vital cogs all season long for the T.F. Brown's Blind Squirrels.

The New Batavia Softball League's Thursday Night Men's League Final Regular Season Standings and Playoff Matchups for Thursday July 13th at Kibbe Park...

Thursday Night Men's League Final Standings and Playoff Schedule plus scenarios. Crazy how tight this league also was. Tie Breakers head to head literally were all by 1 run between the top 5 teams including a tie head to head between Cummings/Lee and TF Browns Master Batters who both defeated each other by 10 runs during the season and had to go to Run Differential to determine who even had that tie breaker had it came down to both of them finishing at 6-4. U.S.P.S narrowly defeated Cummings/Lee and the head to head split between Fava Brothers Lawn Care and TF Browns Beers N Bombs was by 1 run. Game 1 TF Browns Beers N Bombs won by 2 and Game 2, Fava Brothers Lawn Care won by 1. The 3 seed has been a curse in recent history both nights Wednesdays and Thursdays. The reigning champs are praying that continues.

1. U.S.P.S (7-3) (Runs For 115, Runs Against 93) Clinched the #1 seed because they won the tie breaker head to head against Cummings/Lee. Will be home team through out playoffs. Earned first dibs on time of 2nd round game and selected 8pm. Will play the lowest remaining seed at 8pm.

2. Cummings/Lee (7-3) (Runs For 181, Runs Against 114)  Will play highest remaining seed at 9pm.

3. TF Browns Beers N Bombs (6-4) (Runs For 130, Runs Against 101) three way tie which they won the head to head tie breaker against Fava Brothers Lawn Care although they lost the head to head tie to TF Browns Master Batters. Because Fava Brothers Lawn Care owns the tie breaker head to head against TF Browns Master Batters which own the head to head tie breaker on TF Browns Beers N Bombs. Since head to head cannot determine this combination at a three way tie we go to the next tie breaker which is Run Differential. They win this tie breaker with a run differential of +29. (For the newbies to sports and don't understand how tie breakers are designed to work lol) Earned first dibs for time selection round 1 and selected 7pm. Will be home team against TF Browns Commisioners Crew at 7pm first round. If they win will play at 9pm against Cummings/Lee.

4. Fava Brothers Lawn Care (6-4) (Runs For 121, Runs Against 116) Read above how they finished 4th. Lost Run Differential to TF Browns Beers N Bombs but won Run Differential to TF Browns Master Batters with a +5 to -15. Will play at 6pm home team vs TF Browns Master Batters. If they win could play at 8pm against U.S.P.S if TF Browns Beers N Bombs wins round 1. Can play at 9pm against Cummings/Lee if TF Browns Beers N Bombs loses to TF Browns Commissioner's Crew.

5. TF Browns Master Batters (6-4) (Runs For 107, Runs Against 122) Again read above how they claimed the 5 seed with the three way tie. Lost Run Differential to both TF Browns Beers N Bombs and Fava Brothers Lawn Care with a -15. Will play at 6pm as the away team against Fava Brothers Lawn Care. If they win and TF Browns Beers N Bombs win they will play at 8pm against U.S.P.S. If they win and TF Browns Commissioner's Crew wins, they will play at 9pm against Cummings/Lee.

6. TF Browns Commissioner's Crew aka 2 time reigning champions (3-7) (Runs For 120, Runs Against 138) Will play at 7pm as the away team against TF Browns Beers N Bombs since they didn't do themselves any favors the last 2 weeks and neither did the other teams lol. If they win will play at 8pm in a rematch of the title game last season against U.S.P.S

7. Balls Deep (0-10) (Runs For 71, Runs Against 157) Eliminated

Authentically Local
