Teams from 17 high schools from throughout Western New York were at Batavia High School on Saturday for a winterguard circuit competition, including Batavia (top seven photos).

Music instructor Jane Haggett said winterguard is the indoor version of color guard and the teams are judged on the effectiveness of their program, including colors and props selected for the performance, on dance technique, equipment used, and the speed and efficiency of setting up for their performance and removing their set after the performance.

It's great fun for the students to throw and spin prop rifles and sabers during a routine set to music.

The music and the story of the routine are expected to work together for a cohesive performance. 

"The kids that participated are very passionate about the activity," Haggett said. "They love the team effort. They love to dance. They love spinning the equipment. It is definitely a bonding, family-oriented activity. They develop relationships forever with their teammates and with other students in the activity."

It's also fun for Haggett.

"I love seeing the kids be successful," Haggett said. "I love the fact that this activity teaches discipline, perseverance, respect. There are so many other character traits that these kids portray because they have this activity that they spent hours participating in."

Medina (bottom three photos) hosts a circuit competition on March 12. Then there are regional competition is later this year in Philadelphia and Pittsburg followed by the national champion, with Batavia participating, in Dayton.

Pavilion High School hosted its annual badminton tournament today. A total of 26 teams, mostly Pavilion students, participated.

The Firland Flyers, a Mite Level travel hockey team out of Batavia, NY, took to the road last weekend to play in the 2014 Mullins Mite Madness Tournament in Amherst, Mass., on the uMass campus! The Firland Flyers, the only NY team in the tournament, faced teams from Massachusetts, Connecticut and Vermont and took 3rd place overall. Earlier this year, The Firland Flyers took 1st place at the Lakeshore Tournament in Greece and placed 3rd in their division at The Pepsi Tournament in Buffalo.

The 2013/2014 season was the inaugural year for The Flyers and the 2014 Mullins Mite Madness Tourney was their last outing as a team. Some of the players will move on to play at the Squirt level; others will continue to play as Mites.

The Flyers team is led by Coach Kevin Hamilton, Coach Fred Hamilton, Coach Dan Hudson and Assistant Coaches Jeff Whitcombe, Ryan Whitcombe and Joe Eschberger, managed by Bob Johnson.

The Firland Flyers Team is made up of 7- and 8-year-olds from Alexander, Batavia, Le Roy, Oakfield and Pavilion. Congratulations to Bronx Buchholz, Mason Cook, Chase Cummings, Joe DiRisio, Will Eschberger, Cooper Hamilton, Ryan Hamilton, Noah Hudson, Alex Johnson, Jameson Motyka, Greg Narburgh, Brennan Pederson, Mac Wormley and Noah Whitcombe on a successful, memorable and FUN season!

The students of Notre Dame started their day on Friday by gathering to cheer on their classmates, the Girls XC Sectional Championship team -- Madison Gluck, Laurie Call, Anna Warner, Emily McCracken, Shelby McGinnis, Rosemary Flumerfeldt, Emily Sherman -- and Boys Sectional Champion Jeffrey Antolos prior to leaving for the NYSPHSAA State Championships to be held tomorrow at Elma Meadows Golf Course in Elma, NY.
