It has been many, many months since the racers of the Wyoming County International Speedway got the chance to “Feel the Need for Speed." This past Saturday night (may 18) was their first time in 2019 to do just that.

Racers for north of the border, from Canada, were in attendance as well as some teams from near the Pennsylvania border. A total of 24 modified teams 15 4 cyl., 7 SST Super Stocks, 11 Super 6 cars, were ready to stretch their legs and see if all their hard off season work and upgrades would net them the winner’s trophy and prize money that goes hand in hand.

Opening night was sponsored by the Churchville Fire Equipment Co.

Mother Nature cooperated and has given the track a fantastic afternoon and evening for racing. Just one ominous feature of the night was the dreaded FULL MOON…

As on most nights at the Blacktop Bullring the mighty 4 cylinders lead off the program. The 4 bangers as usual put on a great race with a great mix of Hondas, Saturns, Acuras and other makes mixed in. The qualifying went off pretty much hassle free. Then the redraw took place during intermission and that shuffled up the top 6 racers. The feature would run to about half way before a caution would fly for a simple spin.

At this point is was a 2-car race between the #8 of Dave Heims and the #51 of Greg Moldt. Officals would see the exhaust pipe was dragging on the Moldt ride. For safety purposes the #51 had to go pit side and have the crew fix or remove it and not cause a dangerous racing situation if, it was ran over by another car and cause a wreck.

This I believe was the twisted sense of humor of the full moon. But now we had the fastest 4 cyl. In the tail of the field and less than 10 laps to gain as many spots as possible before the checkers waved. Well, Moldt put on the blinders and focused on moving his car to the front.

Drop the green and Moldt passes 5 cars on the back straight, 4 more on the front straight. Now 6th and every lap getting pasted 1 or 2 cars. With the white in the air Moldt put it besides the #8 of Heims.  There was nothing Heims could do, but watch Moldt pick up feature #1 on opening night.

Well over 17 cars are registered to run the SST Super Stock class but only 7 cars were in attendance on opening night. Many of the drivers and crews stating they will be ready next week on Military Appreciation Night. All our perennial runners were on hand and the much awaited return of 3-time track champion, Dave Krawczyk. It was only awaited by the fans, most of the teams in the Super Stock division know that the 11k is the car to beat on most nights.

Tonight was no exception as it was only a handful of laps the the Krawczyk and his 11k were out front. Eric Hastreiter and Paul Flye, both graduates of the 4 cylider class have started making noise in the thou small, but tight class at the bullring.

A new addition to the weekly racing program is the Super 6 class that got its start in Spencer Speedway a few years back. Being the primary entry-level racing division, it keeps the cars very basic. It keeps the cars on OEM rims, bodies, engines and transmission, though the car must have all the safety gear to prevent injuries in case of a wreck at speed on the track.

This class over the years was a 6 to 8 car field. With the class getting more and more competitive, its growing to a very respectable 11 car field, pretty respectable for opening night. During the meet and greet it was Flyin Brian Hallett saying that he did not think that the car was winner capable. But a great start and starting spot helped put the 36 out front early and Brian was not going to let it get away. Hallett was chaced across the line by Cocilova, new comer Chris Deyoe.

Just for fun lets shuffle up the top 12 SST Modified drivers and see what happens. Neil Dietz would lead this full field of Mods to green. Dietz would take the early command of the race and yes he was getting challenges from, Timmy Lewis in the #41 and the #27 of Kevin Lewis. On lap 15 of the 30 lap main, the first of a few yellows waved.

This with the cars of Virts, Logsdon, Dennie, Fuchs and Kosachook. Only Dennie, Logsdon and Zack Kosachook could restart, the rest would watch the conclusion from the grandstands. Lap 18 came and possible damage from the previous wreck may have caused Logsdon to bring out caution 2 in turn one.

The cream was rising to the time and it was clear Bookmiller brought his A game along with John Barber, Danny Majcrhzak, Kevin Timmerman and fan favorite Gary Coon. With only 2 laps remaining, Bookmiller was applying pressure and Dietz was fighting them off. Off turn 3 Dietz entered the turn wide and Bookmiller took his shot and dove deep into the turn three at the apex, Dietz slammed the door and Bookmiller was coming fast. They made contact and it was Dietz spinning off turn four and Bookmiller powered through.

Yellows flew and officials deemed Bookmiller to join Dietz in the rear with only a one lap shoot out. Did I already mention the full moon? Green, white checker is ready now with Timmy Lewis on the pole, Majchrzak outside and Barber in the #01 behind Lewis.

Clean start and Barber helped push Lewis past Majchrzak and it was a two-car battle and barber had the bottom off turn 2 Lewis up high and they had contact and both Lewis and Barber slid they the wet infield grass off turn two. Majchrzak would capitalize on the aggressive misfortune of Lewis and Barber.

 “I could sorta see that these two were not going to lift, so I just held my breath and took full advantage of the spin," said Majchrzak in Victory lane.

Racing at WCIS: Big wins for Gusafson, Schenk, Horvatits and Hanbury as the Shootout at the Bullring approaches

As the 2018 whines down, everyone thought turn to one of biggest racing weekend in the Northeast.   Known as the Shootout at the Bullring.   It’s a 2 day event this year with racing starting Friday night Oct 12th and more racing Saturday Oct 13th.  To cap off the fall weekend is the 100 lap Jim Pierce Memorial race.   Why is this race so important?   Well first it’s a tribute to a great Driver, Mechanic and family man.  Jim Pierce was a SST Modified driver that was well respected and a great wheel man.   Was always helping others no matter what class you ran, Mod, Super stock, 4 cylinder.   It also helps that it’s a significant payday for the winner of $2600. (26 being Jim’s racing number).  Details of the racing itinerary and camping info can be found on the tracks web site www.wcisbullring.com 

With the Shoot just a few weeks away, many drivers and crews were on hand to try and get some good note and set up for the big race that caps off racing for 2018 at the Wyoming County Intl. Speedway.   It was a full house in the garage area with nearly 70 cars signed in to race.   And for those that came to watch most definitely got their money’s worth with fantastic racing and some flared emotions on the speedway.   

I was told by an older gentleman in the midway area, “it’s a great night of racing, when you have 4 to 8 cars all with a very capable of winning in any given class, “ and he was right.   The smallest of cars are the 4 cylinders, but they are far from the smallest in excitement.   1/3 of the cars in this division have won feature in 2018.  Sickles and Sass where the two guys pacing this field to green.  It would take no time for the non-regular, but 3x winner in 2018, Jacob Gusafson to jump out front from his third starting spot.   Most thought the race was for the seconf position, but we were all wrong as the 2x winner of Greg Moldts would find his way to the front and the #26 The Shadow Jimmie Pierce Jr would come from last starting spot to battle with Moldts and then start running down Gusafson.   Jacob had to put together 25 almost perfect laps to keep the Pirce and Moldts behind.   That’s exactly what he did.   “She’s a lil' banged up, Thanks Jody, but it’s mostly cosmetic, it’s still a rocket,” said Gustafson.   

Super 6’s got a bit of good new on this night.   With all the effort by local teams and participation from other track‘s teams, Super 6 will be a weekly class at the Blacktop Bullring in 2019.   Great to give new drivers and crews a great entry level class and they have a  whole winter to get a car and get it prepared for 2019.   More invaders were on hand than WCIS regulars.   Parthemer and last weeks winner Barrett Schenk brought this highly compitive fields to green for their 20 main event.   Schenk wasted no time in showing why he is a track champion and that last week’s win was no fluke.   Hallett in the #36 had a valient effort to no avail as his right rear tire was going bad for the mid point in the race, but would hang on for second as new comer or first time to Wyoming this season, Brandon Allen would put his #89 in third at the conclusion of the Super 6 feature.

SST Super Stocks, this is where the emotion and tempers flared tonight.   Mike Chenaille and Scott Gleed would bring this field to green for their 50 lap event.   Both Chenaille and Gleed have had terrible luck. Gleed, all year in the features as he has won some heats.  Chenaille was had bad luck in the second half of the season.   Both looking to turn it around and close out 2018 strong.   Gleed and Chenaille would battle for the lead and it was not long befor the Stealth missle of Joe Horvatits would take control of the race.   Thru a few cautions and restarts, Horvatits was dominating.   His closest competition was the 17x of Meyers the 2018 track champion and the 14 of Dan Majchrzak.

Early in this feature there seemed to be some bad blood between Majchrzak and Meyers from the previous week.   Last week these two came together in a heat race cutting down a tire on the 17x and the 14 bent a rear axel.   Both would make repairs and run the balance of the night.   That brings us to tonight where you have two very good drivers that was not going to cut any slack to the other.   Early in the 50 lap main these two were racing hard and they made contact with each other entering turn 3.   Both cars heading for the concrete wall that always wins.   Majchrzak hit the hall a ton and the right side of the car climbed the wall doing significant damage to the Majchrzak machine.   Meyer on the other hand had significant damage to his right side.   What appeared to be mostly cosmetic, as Meyers went pit side and was checked over by his crew.   Meyers would return and get a very respectful second for the night.

Lots of action on the speedway for the Modifieds.  As I stated earlier, a bunch of invaders came to the track to shake down their cars in preparation of the BIG Shootout at the Bullring  October 12th -13th.   Twenty six cars on hand and that calculates into tons of action on a 1/3 mile speedway.    After the redraw, Bro Bradshaw would be on the pole with last weeks winner Alan Bookmiller to his outside.    Then it looked like the who’s who of Modified drivers, Rusty Smith, Tony Hanbury, TJ Potrzebowski, John Barbar, Patti Pruitt and our weekly runners.  Rick Knapp Jr,(2018 WCIS Champion),  Dan Majchrzak, the Bradshaw Brothers and the Dennie Girls.   A great start for all and it would not last as the first a a handful of cautions would slow the field.

The first was the #66 of Geoff Sharkey, seems the fuel cap came off and he was spilling fuel on the track.  Back to green and bookmiller had the lead with Bradshaw second and the charging Rusty Smith on his way to the front.   Hanbury, Potrzebowski and Majchrzak and Knapp were bidding their time and making their way to the front.   The surface of the Bullring is not overly abusive to tires, but these seasoned racers were not going to waste the tires in the first have of the race.  They all knew they needed some tire in the last 10 -15 laps if they wanted a shot at the win.

About 20 laps in it was Smith , Hanbury and Potrzebowski in the top three positions and as the restart happened it seemed Smiths car when wide forcing Hanbury up in the marbles.   Hanbury gathered it up and we stayed green, a few laps later Hanbury passed Smith and coming down the front straight Hanbury repaid the favor as he break checked Smith allowing Potrzebowski to blow by both cars.   That was short lived as both Hanbury and Smith would get back by the Potrzebowski  #72.   Then it seemed every 20 or so laps we would draw a caution and that would tighten the field back up and add to what could be a lot more drama.   Lap 25 the Billy Kosachook would spin his #19 machine.   Lap 32 the Timmy Lewis car would come to a stop in the infield just off the racing surface in turns 1 and 2.  Lap 55 saw the 6j machine of Carrie Bolton loose the handle and spin her ride off turn 2 and slide thru the grass on the back straight away.

The last caution flew on lap 85 with Jen Dennie looping her #22 ride off turn four.   This left us with a 15 lap shoot out, sort of a look into the future and see who was best prepared for the 100 laps tonight as well as the Jim Pierce Memorial race in a few weeks.  Hanbury was on point, Smith at the ready and local runners Knapp and Majchrzak representing WCIS well.   Also representing the speedway wall was the fact our four lady racers were all running together and in the top ten. Cassie Logsdon, 7th, Beth Dennie 8th, her sister Jen 9th and Carrie Bolton rounding out the top ten.  So the 15 lap shoot out.  The questions were answered soon as the green fell for the last 15 circuits or 5 miles.   It looks as if the top ten or so had played it just about perfect.  Hanbury jumped out front, smuith in second followed by Knap, Majchrzak and Potrzebowski.

Winner circle interviews were as expected, “Well Rusty ran me up in the loose stuff cause he knew we were a rocket on restarts, so after a few laps and the tires were cleaned off we got back around him and repaid the favor”  Smith said “ Tony has run into us before and this is twice I let him gather it up and we raced on, next time I won’t be so nice”.   So with the Writing on the wall it will be interesting at the very least to see if this power struggle of two very talented drivers carries thru to the Shoootout at the Bullring October.

Winners and champions crowned on Double points at Wyoming County International Speedway

It was another exciting night of racing Saturday, Aug. 25, at the Blacktop Bullring. The three weekly classes were battling for a championship, on Double point night.

With an almost full moon, The racing was far from boring and kept all in attendance on the edge of their seat with plenty of racing action and the drama unfolding with the point chase on the line. The question was, who would put it all on the line to gain points or advance themselves and who was going to play conservatively and try to not lose any points to their competition?

And then you throw in the wild card of those that are only here for the trophy and the big check with no regards for points, because they don’t run here every week.

It wasn’t 'til feature time before the near full moon showed itself, and most people know that for some un-scientific reason odd things happen. The 4 cylinder class had a heated point chase going on. Kathie Ricketson in her Rudy red Ricketson Rocket, has been very steady and consistently in the top 5 all season long, other than her one crash early in the season.

Then we add Dave Heimes, a regular at the Spencer Speedway. Dave has had some great runs at WCIS and even picked up a feature win. Just to make things interesting we have to add a third horse to the race and that would be the Bradshaw family racing #05 piloted by Otis Bradshaw. Otis taking over the driving duties of the #05 from his sister in-law that vacated the seat in favor of having another racing baby boy Bradshaw. So Otis in the #05 is only 29 points out of the point chase while Heimes is a mere 11 going into tonight’s Double Point night.

Young gun Jonathan Klamut and Ricketson would be on the front row. Bradshaw would start third and Heimes fourth. As the green fell it was obvious what each of the top three driver’s mission was. Bradshaw threw caution to the wind and wanted, no needed the win for ant shot at the championship.   Heimes was looking to beat Ricketson by two positions to claim the championship. Kathie was on the some mode as she was all season, run hard but run safe and keep the Heimes #8 insight. Bradshaw did or was doing what he needed to do. Get out front and try to run off and hide on the field.

That plan was working til the caution flew and put the red, white and blue #66 of Gustafson to Otis’s inside on the restart. Bradshaw battled for a handful of laps til Gustafson took the number one position. About half way the #8 of Heimes over took Ricketson. Ricketson knew she had to stay with the #8 to win the championship.

As the laps were winding down amothe Spencer invader was hot on Ricketson’s bumper. Corey Copeland was working on the #44 and with only a few circuits left he had his #89 machine door to door with Ricketson. Ricketson ripped a page out of her lady luck book and pinned Copeland behind a slow moving lap car and cruised to a forth place finish, only one spot behind the Heimes #8 and good enough to collect her first track championship.

Super stocks point chase was not as heated as other classes. Meyers in his beautiful #17x machine was fairly comfortable with a 32 point advantage over Eric Hastreiter. Hastreiter thou was under fire by Dan Majchrzak that was only 5 point separation. Majchrzak would start 5th tonight, Hastreiter 6th and point leader Meyers would fire from 9th position. Majchrzak need a win and problems for the Meyers car. Hastreiter also need Meyer to have issues , but only needed to stay ahead of Majchrzak to collect his first track championship.

Joe Horvatits would use his pole position starting spot to jump out front early and look as he may pick up a win after a horrible July where he nearly totaled his #4 Super stock with heavy rear end damage from a big wreck. The first of three yellows flew with Kyle Skoney losing the handle on his #55 machine off turn four. No contact so a quick yellow and back to green. Though this class may not have 20 cars its 10 very well matched field, that makes it incredibly tough to pass. And that’s how being in the right place, right time got Meyers past the #47 of Hastreiter and #14 of Majchrzak. Horvatits was not about to roll over, Joe raced Meyers hard and clean til meyer slipped pasted to the eventual win and championship. Horvatits 2nd and Hastreiter 3rd, Majchrzak 4th.

Feature event 3 on Championship night would see our Bi-weekly division the Super 6’s take to the 1/3 mile Bullring. This was leading up to a track first as Allison Knoepfler was leading points going into tonight program. Both John Parthermer and Spencer invader Andy Cocilova where within 6 points of Knoepfler. Parthermer and Cocilova would start on the front row while Knoepfler would have to start from 3rd. It would be 20 laps to see who was going to claim the win and a championship. For the first 5 or 6 laps the front row stayed together and ran door handle to door handle.

Thus slowing Knoepfler and allowing Brain Hallett in the #36 a team car to Knoepfler to not only catch her but challenge her for the 3rd position. The car on the move was the Wilbert’s you pick it #51 of Barrett Schenk. Rolling from 4th starting spot he used the high line to drive around both Cocilova and Parthermer. Parthermer would fade toward the end and finish 5th as Cocilova would finish 2nd and just beat out Knoepfler for the 2018 track championship.

SST Modifieds, boasting another 20 car field on Championship/ Double point night. As in all the classes before this feature event was another with a lot of open ended 2018 stories that needed a 35 lap main event to settle or finish this seasons drama. Out front in points was a driver that came into the 2018 season with all his Ts crossed and Is dotted. It showed as all season long outside of a wreck his guy was on the front stretch almost every night, that’s consistency.

Ricky Knapp Jr. rolled into the speedway with a healthy 104 point lead over Dan Majchrzak, 107 over Toad Bradshaw, 122 over Steve Fuchs and 135 over Cassie Logsdon.  So a smooth night was all his guy needed to wrap out a championship. 2nd thru 5th these four drivers were hungry and ready to do what it took to gain a spot or more, all secretly wishing Knapp may have mechanical issues on the #11.

The top six positions in the feature were filled with somewhat new comers to the modified ranks on the pole was Tom Alloco, first full year in a modified, flanking was Zack Kosachook also fairly new to a full season in the seat of a modified. Carrie Brown and Geoff Sharkey made up row 2 and Nate Michielsen and Cassie Logsdon in row 3. The point contenders would have to race thru the young guns the cap off their season. Toad Bradshaw would slice and dice his way to the front and take the top spot from pole position starter Tom Alloco on a restart after a first lap incident involving the spinning Carrie Brown and Sharky would get collected by young Steve Sherwood.

A few laps later it would be the #29 of Jay Withey Jr spinning off turn four and coming to a rest head on to the on coming leaders. All would clear and all would restart. This made for a front row restart with both Bradshaw cars up front. Toad to the inside and Bro to the outside. Bro used the highline to power past his brother to get the lead. The man on a mission was the #40 of Alan Bookmiller. Bookmiller was not a regular all season so he was only running for the win and the big check. Bookmiller came out of the 15th starting spot and by half way was challenging for the lead.

After some contact between the rear of Bookmiller car Toad Bradshaw had left front suspension issues and would fall out of contention. Bookmiller would then set his sights on Bro Bradshaw. After a few hard fought laps it was Bookmiller out front and Bradshaw had to deal with a hard charging Knapp. Knapp had just cleared the #0 of Bro Bradshaw as Bradshaw was getting looser as the laps were winding down.

With only 6 laps remaining, Bradshaw spins exiting turn four. This would tighten up the field for a 6 lap dash for cash, the win and most importantly the championship.  Bookmiller took the inside, Knapp had the outside. Majchrzajk and Timmy Lewis made up the second row. Lewis having a great night on his first trip back to the Perry track since his breaking his leg in a dirt bike incident and numerous surgeries. Bookmiller used the short way around the speedway to regain the lead and slide Knapp back to second.

“ We really were not that good in the heat, so we threw the kitchen sink at it and it was almost perfect,” Bookmiller said. “We were really good tonight, just a bit of a push coming off, and just could not hang out there and pass Alan."

"But we will take this second and engoy our track championship though I really wanted to win both, feature and track title,” Knapp said.

Though the points racing is done for 2018, there are still two more events on the schedule.
