Eugene Jankowski Jr. of Batavia finished First Place in the Production Division for the match/season and Fourth Place overall at the New York State Precision Rifle Series 2020 grand finale, held Sept. 19 at the Olean Rod and Gun Club.

The 11-stage match challenged competitors to hit numerous different sized steel targets from 300 to 600 yards, off of various obstacles and from awkward shooting positions.

Jankowski also won the first stage of the “Accu-shot One Shot Challenge,” which required the first shot of the match to be fired at a playing card from 100 yards away.

“When I made a near perfect shot on the first shot of the match, I just knew it was going to be a great day!” Jankowski said.

Jankowski now qualifies to be invited to the Northeast region finale, which is scheduled to be held early October in Ohio. If he does well at the regional, then it’s off to the national match mid-December in Oklahoma.

NEW TRIPOLI, Pa. -- Eugene Jankowski Jr. finished in third place Practical Division and fourth place overall at the 2019 Pennsylvania State 3 Gun Championship held Labor Day weekend at the Ontelaunee Rod & Gun Club in New Tripoli, Pa.

Jankowski worked through a rifle malfunction early in the match, adding a fraction of time that would later move him out of second place by a 10th of a second.

Approximately 144 competitors from Pennsylvania and the surrounding states completed eight challenging stages of fire during the two-day match.

Three gun competitors systematically used a handgun, rifle and shotgun to shoot a variety of targets from multiple positions during each of the eight courses of fire.

“Using the three different firearms feels like you’re shooting three different matches at the same time," Jankowski said. "It’s full of action and the clock is ticking.”

Jankowski is president of the Batavia City Council and a retired Batavia police lieutenant.

Eugene Jankowski Jr. (left), of Batavia, and James Mixon (right) of Allardt,Tenn., are presented with awards by Match Director Joe Burdick (center) for finishing Third Place Trooper Division at the Bushnell Elite Tactical Sniper Challenge held Feb. 16-18 in Clinton, S.C.

Jankowski is president of the Batavia City Council and a retired City of Batavia police lieutenant.

More than 100 competitors from all over the country attended. The competition is a team event requiring the Trooper Division members to carry their rifle and gear between the nine separate stages of fire based off of real life military and police incidents.

This amounted to the teams hiking a total of 25 miles over three days in natural terrain carrying an approximately 50-pound backpack.

Competitors were required to engage multiple targets from unusual positions such as a crashed helicopter, tower, house, vehicle and even a climbing wall.

One stage required firing a single shot through a 2-inch hole in a piece of steel at 250 yards to hit the small target behind it. Another involved being seat belted into a special made SUV while it was rolled onto its roof and using a hand gun to shoot targets through the window while upside down. Teams then had to free themselves from the seatbelt, exit the upside down SUV, recover their gear and run 50 yards to engage the rifle targets.

Jankowski said  “It was one of the most physically demanding and fun matches I’ve ever competed in. I can’t wait to see what they have planned for next year!”

Photo below is of the gear Jankowski, like the other competitors, had to carry to each incident. Bottom photo is "the view from the SUV moments before the rollover.'"

Action-packed 3 Gun is one of the fastest-growing shooting sports in the country right now. Competitors use three different firearms -- a modern sporting rifle; a pistol; and a shotgun. Distances of the targets might vary from 1 yard to 500 yards or anything in between. The shooter who hits the most targets -- and avoids certain "no shoot" ones -- in the least amount of time is the winner.

The FN 3 Gun Championship took place Sept. 1-3 at Peacemaker National Training Center located in the beautiful West Virginia mountains near Gerrardstown. Top competitors traveled from all over the United States to compete in this annual event. Video highlights of the event can be found here https://youtu.be/FWrZ4vfnbDM
