When members of the Kiwanis Club of Batavia say to be ready at 9 a.m. sharp in Centennial Park for the annual Easter Egg Hunt, they ain't kidding.

Hundreds of hours of work by volunteers with the club and the Key Club at Batavia High School are spent stuffing 5,000 plastic Easter eggs with 10,000 pieces of candy, which are collected in baskets by kids eager for sweet treats, prizes, and the thrill of the hunt in under 10 minutes.

"I look forward to it every year," said Matt Landers with the Kiwanis Club. "The Kiwanians look forward to it every year. The Key Club looks forward to it. It's a total team effort, and we all get into it. It's even better when we have a sunny day like it is today."

In the days leading up to the hunt, Landers and helpers put out a golden Easter egg in Centennial Park each day. The eggs enable the finder to redeem a coupon for a 12-inch chocolate bunny from Oliver's Candies. On the day of the hunt, there are nine more golden eggs laid out in the park -- three for each age group -- that also enable the finder to win a giant chocolate bunny.

The daily hunt for golden easter eggs started during the pandemic shutdown of group events and the Kiwanis Club decided to retain it even though in-person hunts are now possible.

That makes for a total of 16 12-inch chocolate bunnies given out to community children.

City Church hosted an Easter Egg Hunt at St. Anthony's on Liberty Street in Batavia on Tuesday evening.

The church is planning another hunt for Easter Sunday at 10 a.m. at St. Anthony's.

As all of the young Easter egg hunters prepare for the annual Batavia Kiwanis Easter egg hunt, which begins at 9 a.m. sharp on March 30 at Centennial Park, club member Matt Landers wants to remind participants that there will be one golden egg hidden every day in the park from Friday through March 28 for the finding.

"The eggs will be hidden even if there is snow on the ground, so hopefully the kiddos put on their snow boots and start searching tomorrow," Landers said Thursday as he prepared to hide the first of seven golden eggs.

Each child that finds a golden egg may redeem it for a prize of a chocolate bunny from Oliver's Candies during the big event on March 30 at Centennial Park in Batavia.

The Easter egg hunt will feature "thousands of eggs," members say, so come prepared for the hunt and to have some family fun, even if Mother Nature doesn't fully cooperate with the beginning of spring.

Batavia FPC to host Easter egg hunt, brunch and bunny April 1

Folks at Batavia First Presbyterian Church are counting on spring's arrival for the annual Easter Egg Hunt and Brunch with the Easter bunny again this year.

Kiwanis Club's Easter 'Egg-stravaganza' concludes with winners' photo session Saturday morning

Matt Landers of the Batavia Kiwanis Club hides the 12th Kiwanis Golden Easter Egg today at Centennial Park as part of the service organization's holiday promotion with Oliver's Candies. Landers will hide the final egg on Wednesday.

A note inside the egg tells the story:

Congratulations! You have found one of the 13 Kiwanis Golden Easter Eggs! This entitles you to an Oliver’s Chocolate Easter Bunny! To collect your chocolate bunny, arrive with this note and the Golden Egg at the south side of Centennial Park on Saturday, April 3^rd at 10 a.m. We will have all of the prize winners gather for a picture with the Easter Bunny as they collect their chocolate bunny. We hope you had fun looking for the Golden Egg, and wish you and your family a very Happy Easter! (Note: Only one Golden Egg per family can be redeemed and winners must be 12 and under).

Rotary Club of Le Roy apologizes for 'Easter Egg Drive-thru' plan, and thanks supporters

The membership of the Rotary Club of Le Roy felt that Easter is traditionally a holiday and season of hope for many, and anticipated that the continuation “Easter Egg Drive-thru” would boost the spirits of the community in a time of global despair.

The annual tradition of the Le Roy Easter Egg Hunt began nearly 30 years ago. Traditionally, the Easter Egg Hunt is held the Saturday prior to Easter at Le Roy Central School’s Hartwood Park.

This year’s adapted event of the egg drive-thru was scheduled to take place on April 11th at the village’s Trigon Park, which was deemed able to handle the expected traffic safely. Rotary had worked with the Village of Le Roy Board, and Police and devised a plan that worked within the guidelines of both the CDC and New York State to distribute the 8,000 candy stuffed eggs.

Shortly before 8 a.m. the morning of the event, the club's President Mary Young received a call from Le Roy Village Police Sergeant Greg Kellogg, advising that the day's event should be canceled.

Kellogg had received a phone call complaint with concern about the Easter Egg Drive-thru as his shift began at 6 a.m. Kellogg informed the club that this was the first and only complaint the department had received. Upon receiving the complaint, Kellogg then reached out to officials at the Genesee County Health Department.

After conferring, the health department determined that the event should not be held (due to social-distancing protocols prompted by the coronavirus pandemic).

On Monday, April 13th, the club reached out to the Genesee County Health Department for clarification. Sarah Balduf, Environmental Health director for Genesee and Orleans County Health Departments, responded via email.

In the email response, she stated [I based my decision on Governor Cuomo's "New York State on PAUSE" Executive Order: Specifically, points 2 and 3 of his 10-point plan: 2-Nonessential gatherings of individuals of any size for any reason (e.g., parties, celebrations or other social events) are canceled or postponed at this time; 3-Any concentration of individuals outside their home must be limited to workers providing essential services, and social distancing should be practiced.]

The Rotary of Club of Le Roy would like to apologize to those agencies and individuals affected by the decision of the club to hold and then cancel the event. It was not the club’s intention to break any or part of Governor Cuomo’s executive order but to promote hope and goodwill in the community.

The club would like to thank the Le Roy businesses and organizations that contributed and sponsored the project. Also, the club would like to thank Mayor Rogers and the Village Board for supporting the event.

The Rotary Club of Le Roy wants to assure the community that the candy will be safely stored until a time when the candy can be carefully distributed.
