Main St. during weekend fire https://www.thebatavian.com/press-release/city-fire-rescues-female-out-of-second-floor-window-on-so-main-st-during-weekend-fire Press Release:

On Saturday, Feb. 18, at 7:19 p.m., the City of Batavia Fire Department responded to a reported kitchen fire with a person trapped at 44 South Main St. in the City of Batavia.  Initial fire units arrived at 7:22 pm to find a two and a half story two-family home with an occupant trapped at a second floor window and a fire in the kitchen area of the home. Fire crews quickly deployed a portable ground ladder, brought a female occupant to safety, and extinguished the fire. Fire damage was confined to the kitchen area and smoke damage throughout the upper apartment.

Two other occupants were in the home at the time of the fire and one of those occupants was transported by ambulance to Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester. No firefighter injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire was determined to be accidental due to cooking by City of Batavia Fire Department fire investigators.

The City of Batavia Fire Department was assisted by the City of Batavia Police, Town of Batavia FD, Genesee County Emergency Dispatch Center, Genesee County Sheriff’s Office and the American Red Cross.

The Buffalo Bills made it back safe and sound after the team's victorious trip to defeat the Chicago Bears 35 to 13 Saturday. However, with Thruway closures, the team apparently took a slight detour down Route 5 in the city, Manager Rachael Tabelski said.

As a result, some local fans decided to celebrate the win as a bus parade drove past City Hall on Sunday. Fire engines blared horns at the passing entourage traveling west from Rochester.

The City of Batavia Fire Department came out on a subzero Christmas morning to make sure the Buffalo Bills felt the love from Batavia!" Tabelski said. "We believe they had to travel through Batavia because the 90 was still closed."

Firefighters were also busy helping out at the city fire station. The state's Department of Homeland Security had delivered 14 pallets of supplies that were awaiting distribution to 11 warming shelters throughout Genesee County. The shelters were opened after Winter Storm Elliott crashed into the western county area and swamped motorists and rescue vehicles with blinding snow and wind.

Fire hydrant flushing this week in south and west sections of Batavia https://www.thebatavian.com/press-release/fire-hydrant-flushing-this-week-in-south-and-west-sections-of-batavia/618910 Press Release

City of Batavia Fire Department will be flushing fire hydrants on Wednesday, October 5 and Thursday, October 6 from approximately 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the general area of south of West Main Street and west of Jackson Street. Homes and businesses nearby will be affected.

These tests may result in a temporary discoloration of water in that area. As in the past, please do not attempt to wash any clothing if your water appears discolored. If you do experience a discoloration of your water, run cold water for about five minutes or until clear.

This annual testing is essential to maintain the communities Class III Insurance Services Office (ISO) public protection classification, and to assure that fire hydrants are operating efficiently for fire protection purposes.

Along with maintaining the fire rating, the test monitors the health of the city's water system, identifies weak areas in the system, and removes material that settle in the water lines. Checking each hydrant improves fire department personnel knowledge of the hydrant locations.

If you have any questions, or should notice a hydrant in need of repair, please contact the Fire Department at 585-345-6375.
