Ten students from Genesee County receive Key Award from Elmira College

Elmira College recently announced this year's recipients of its annual Key Award. This year's award was given to 761 students across 14 states and Puerto Rico. A tradition that goes back to 1935, the Key Award is presented to outstanding students in their junior year of high school or preparatory school. Those receiving the award included:

This year, the award was given to 761 students across 14 states and Puerto Rico. Recipients receive an $80,000 scholarship over a four-year period, $20,000 per year, upon enrolling at Elmira College.

"This award is given to those who have exhibited their potential to excel academically and serve as leaders," said Charles Lindsay, president of Elmira College. "We hope they will choose to make Elmira College their place."

Speaking to students during the 2022 Key Award Ceremony on August 22, Patrick Gillette, director of admissions said, "We know you are someone who would thrive as a member of the Elmira College campus community, and we want to invest in your success at Elmira College."

Sponsored by the Alumni Association, the Key Award recognizes students for high scholastic achievement, leadership, citizenship, and participation in extracurricular activities.

The more than 120 attending recipients met with Elmira College professors, staff, current students, and athletic coaches; attended information sessions about EC programs; and toured the campus.

Laura Schrenker of Bergen graduates from SUNY Oneonta

Laura Schrenker of Bergen, NY is among the students who graduated from SUNY Oneonta following the spring 2022 semester. The college's commencement ceremony was held on Saturday, May 21. Laura earned a Master of Science in Education degree as an Educational Technical Specialist .

Resurrection and Ascension parishes to hold joint faith formation classes

Registration is now open for the 22-23 Faith Formation Program at Resurrection and Ascension Roman Catholic Parishes in Batavia.   The parish families are excited about this joint venture to share the faith with our families and children.  All sacramental preparation classes (Reconciliation, First Communion, and Confirmation) will be offered and enriching programs for the entire family.

Onondaga Community College names Batavia's Jake Humes to All-Academic Team

As the sporting season has come to a close, we would like to highlight our student-athletes for their dedication in the classroom. 24 total Lazers were placed on the NJCAA Region III All-Academic team for the 2021-2022 season. Onondaga also placed 19 student-athletes were placed on the NJCAA  2021-2022 All-Academic Team. 

To be considered for the Region's All-Academic team, student-athletes must have earned at least 24 credit hours with an associated grade point average (GPA) of at least a 3.5 on a 4.0 scale for the academic year. 

These worthy student-athletes earned a position on the 2021-2022 Region III All-Academic Team:

Humes graduated Suma Cum Laude from the Lillian Slutzker Honors College at Onondaga Community College in May. In addition to graduating with a cumulative average of 3.98,  he also was the only student-athlete in region 3 of NY that was named to the NJCAA All-Academic 1st  team for Baseball. Humes begins RIT in the fall to begin working on a degree in Business Management.

Bergen National Guard Soldier Receives New Rank, New Responsibilities

Major General Ray Shields, the adjutant general for the state of New York, announces the recent promotion of members of the New York Army National Guard in recognition of their capability for additional responsibility and leadership.

Jillian Menzie from Bergen, N.Y., and assigned to the Company D, 1st Battalion, 171st Aviation Regiment, received a promotion to the rank of sergeant on May 6, 2022.

Army National Guard promotions are based on overall performance, attitude, leadership ability, and development potential.

These promotions additionally recognize the best-qualified Soldiers and attract and retain the highest caliber Citizen Soldiers for a career in the New York Army National Guard.

RIT's 137th academic convocation celebration was held in May and featured remarks by Kimberly Bryant, founder of the nonprofit organization Black Girls CODE.

Alex Dean from Bergen Named PSAC Scholar-Athlete for Mansfield University

Alex Dean from Bergen was one of 70 Mansfield University student-athletes to earn Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Scholar-Athlete recognition for the recently completed 2021-22 season.

Dean is a member of the Sprint football team for the Mounties.

In order to be eligible, the 2021-22 student-athletes must maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.25 upon completion of the academic year.

With 4,144 student-athletes eligible, it marked 53% of the PSAC student-athlete population. The PSAC has now registered at least a 30% rate for 14 consecutive years.

Griffin Della Penna receives SPJ scholarship

Griffin Della Penna, of Batavia, and sports journalism student at Canisius, ahs been awarded a scholarship from the Society of Professional Journalists.

Della Penna has worked as a broadcaster for the Batavia Muckdogs and also worked in media with the Buffalo Sabres, Buffalo Bandits, Pegula Sports and Entertainment and ESPN 3.

Prince-Milks-Mosher 115th Annual Family Reunion

Descendants of Job PRINCE and Rhoda KIBBE will meet for the 115th Annual Prince Family Reunion on August 13, 2022 at The Barone family farm, 1154 Olean Road, South Wales, NY, 14139, rain or shine, at 11:00 am.

Job and Rhoda had ten children. Nine of those children spent at least some time in Western New York during the 1800s. Son Jonathan had a total of twenty children. Of those twenty children, nineteen lived to adulthood and eighteen married. Many descendants still live in the Western New York area. The family has expanded to most of Western New York, including Genesee County. Descendant surnames in Genesee County, NY include Prince, Miller, Mosher, Downy, Wade, Milks, and many, many more, beginning in the early 1800s to present day. All are welcome to attend.

Please bring a dish to pass, a story to tell, updated family information, your own beverage, table service, chair, etc. Please bring something for a basket raffle. This year, our goal is $2000 to pay for underground radar and a new sign for the Milks Cemetery on Rt. 353 in Persia, NY. Many of our family members are buried there. Several known headstones have fallen and are buried.
