From reader Georgia Voss:

My husband and I were honored to have a visit Sunday with a Korean Veteran who was to be honored with 6 others on Memorial Day by Steve Hawley.  I saw no mention of this in the Daily News and am curious if you folks have knowledge of the event and other participants.

So we contacted Assemblyman Hawley's office, which provided the following information on honors handed out Monday:

  • Thomas E. Hayes Specialist Four, AUS, of the US Army, received the New York Medal of Merit. Hayes served in Vietnam and his military service covered 1969 to 1971.  He is a Silver Star winner.
  • John E. Corrado was awarded a Conspicuous Service Cross.  Corrado served in Vietnam and was in the Army from 1968 to 1970.
  • Ettore Ianni also received the Conspicuous Service Cross. Ianni served in Korea and was in the Army from 1951 to 1970.
  • Keith A. Weinert also received the Conspicuous Service Cross.  Weinert is a Vietnam veteran and served in the Army from 1967 to 1970.

The Conspicuous Service Cross was created by the New York Legislature in the 1920s. It is the highest award New York can bestow in its veterans. Recipients must have distinguished themselves by performing particularly brave and heroic acts which earned them individual citations while serving in the armed forces.

Steve Hawley is truly a great man and a great representative. He knows that these men deserve to be recognized. Although I am a very active Democrat I totally support Steve.

And may we never forget these heroes who fought for our country!

Every Asseblyman/woman in the state of New York does this task. It's part of their job, so please refrain from putting him up on a pedestal. What the citizens of Genesee County need to be looking at is his voting record in Albany, not his PR appearances & press releases. His extreme right wing, ultra-consevative voting record is not in our best interests here in upstate New York. It's time for a change.

Not saying anything you say is inaccurate -- but can you point to specifics? Do you have a particular voting pattern you can point to? Specific bills he's authored?

Assemblyman Hawley has delivered time and time again for Batavia when it comes to assistance for our community. While I don't agree with his positions on all of the issues, Steve has constantly received the endorsement of many Labor Unions and other pro-worker organizations (United Teachers Association, AFCSME, NYS Farm Bureau and the New York State AFL-CIO) for his strong relationships with the labor movement and his willingness to stand for the middle class, when it comes to taxes and when it comes to sustaining a healthy economy based on good paying jobs. He

I know that he takes his responsibility seriously as a representative of all, I am a progressive Democrat that attempts to elect Democrats to office. However, I believe that Steve Hawley is a rare breath of bipartisanship in an increasingly ugly political environment. Thats why I support him.

As to his "right-wing voting record" I don't know what your referring too, but I do feel that he represents myself and my community, which is diverse in political views, very VERY well. Political parties are important but their never more important than whats best for the community.
