Push button, get help

By Philip Anselmo

Batavia's city police really want you to understand how the new call box works. So much so that they've sent out express directions on its use to all the media in town.

That's it to the left here. It's set up now just outside the door to police headquarters at 10 W. Main St. and looks a lot like an emergency box you might find on a college campus. In fact, it looks identical.

These photos were issued along with a brief description on how the device works, why it's there and why you should know about it.

Here's what they say:

By pushing the button on the device it automatically dials and calls Police dispatch. A dispatcher will answer and direct the caller to help. If an Officer is in the Police Station a dispatcher will call him via Police Radio and the Officer can permit access into the building. If the Officer is on patrol he will be directed to respond to the Police Station to assist. Monday through Friday from 8:30 am to 4:30 PM a desk clerk will be at the Police station to assist citizens who come to the Police Station. This will take effect on 09/01/2008.

Pictured using the help phone is Paula Boundy from East Bethany NY.

What is wrong with this picture ?

Has anyone been that "happy" going to a police station ? Right ?

Also, after pressing button please "SHOUT" over the intercom to make sure they hear you, if in fact, someone is there.

Maybe I just don't have enough "interaction" with the police to understand but what is this supposed to do for us or the police?

Umm Hi can I come in I wanna talk

If it's an emergency I don't want to be pushing buttons outside waiting for whomever and I really doubt that in an emergency i'm going to be strolling over to the call box

How close do you have to be to the box to be heard on a noisy day cause it would be hilarious to have to stoop over in an emergency

Why not just open the door and walk in
What is so valuable inside you need permission to enter

What if two people show up at once

Nothing like the assistance of a box/prerecorded message/answering machine/intercom personality to get you through the tough times

I still do not get it.It does not make sense to me.Why would they be closed nights and weekends? Why not be open when the most crime is happening?Be open weekends and nights.Isn't the dispatcher the only one that has moooved?Arent police still there at the station? So say i went to ring or push the "intercom", and there are police right indide say watchin football mabe. Are they going to answer the door?Say somone was having aaa domestic. Then the phone was broke the lady, or guy went to go in.She's deperatly ringing the buzzer while someone attacks her.And she, or he doesn't make it over to the Jail, not the sheriffs, that's not there any more.I wonder how many other police departments lock the doors?I bet there are zero.I'd surely like to know if people agree with me.Cause i think it just plain a no brainer...by the way if the city is in so much financial trouble how do they afford to buy all "NEW" cars. And the first time i saw the lightless car was at "jackson square".The first thing i thought ,as i looked at the front view.I thought, how come that police car has no lights?Another no brainer. This city could save so much money. If they stopped the guilty ,till proven innocent thing here.Arresting people for no reason or very little reason.Like say you got into a domestic on the phone. She "says" you said something. How much does that cost to keep going to court forever?A huuuuge" number of people have court orders against each other. The fines are less than the courts cost right? In my opinion stop arresting people over trival matters. Then they would save huuug"e amounts of money here.Police, judges, jail, probation,GCASA for people who dont want to go..Wait till the end o their probation violate em for something more jail...I know first hand from experience how it works.I never said i was a saint. And some belong in jail. But many are there for "no" reason like last time i was arrested on 7-21-06.Beaten for an email about visitation in front of my boys.Of course that would be "called" resisting arrest right?Ya know ,i'd like to see the batavian, follow one arrest story, from beginning to end.And for the amount it costs, the court fees to be printed.I'd like to be allowed ,to vote for judges, not see them appointed. The scales of justice are leaning...and uneven especially here...dan
