Wild ending to wild game gives Batavia fifth straight win

By Howard B. Owens

In a wild one last night, the Batavia Muckdogs won the team's fifth-straight game and extended its three-game lead over second place Williamsport by beating State College 12-11.

Batavia and the Spikes took a 9-9 tie into the 11th inning. In the top of the frame, State College scored two runs to pull ahead, but the Muckdogs put three runners across the plate in the bottom half to pull out the victory.

Wild throws doomed the Spikes in the 11th.

After the Muckdogs tied the score on a double by Geoffrey Klein, a triple by Chris Edmondson and a single by Victor Sanchez, Sanchez was able to reach second on a wild pitch.

Then things got really strange.

Audry Perez struck out swinging -- at a wild pitch. When Perez ran to first -- as a hitter can do when he strikes out but the catcher misses the ball -- catcher Miguel Mendez made the throw to first to record the out, but Sanchez, sprinting from second, didn't stop running. He scored the winning run when first baseman Gerlis Rodriguez threw the ball away.

Reliever Andy North was credited with the win.

Starter Nick McCully lasted only three-and-a-third innings, giving up 10 hits and nine runs (seven earned).

Edmundson and Sanchez each scored three runs in the game on two hits apiece.

Perez hit a grand-slam homer in the third.

The Muckdogs are in Jamestown tonight and return to Dwyer tomorrow to face the Jammers again. Jamestown is in third place in the Pinckney Division, three-and-a-half games behind Batavia.

This was my first "Muckdogs" game. When I was a kid, I used to go to the games at the old stadium when they were the Clippers. I am glad I went...it was a very exciting game! I'm thinking of going again on Sunday. I kick myself for not going to a game sooner all these years.

Has any ever bothered to check the standings. Maybe it's just me. The Rochester Red Wings are 48 -90 in last place. While the Batavia Muckdogs are 42-27 in first place with a three game lead with three games to go. Naomi Silver may need a pair of glasses. Batavia, NY much smaller community than Rochester, NY I Think jealousy is part of the reason the Muckdogs are on the chopping Block.
The upper elite in Batavia,NY really need to look at themselves. We won the NY/Pa title, in 2008 and, we can win the division, if we finish strong this year. Simply put The Muckdogs are hot property. And you want to let them go? I love the Muckdogs I hope they stay, but as you can tell, Rochester Baseball are Using the Muckdogs for their own failures. Where are the Mancuso's, The Ponillio's and all these other demo-god business owners of Batavia, NY? If i were a guessing person i'd say they are not a asset to the community of Batavia, NY like they want you to believe.
I want to say to the players and the Manager, Thank You. You men give it your all game after game, Your record shows. It's the front office, which needs cleaning up.
The Muckdog front office, reminds me of the City of Batavia's front office, It's in shambles and whats worse, very dishonest with themselves and most important, to their community.
I would love to see the Muckdogs play the Brooklyn Cyclones in the Championship, and Win. That would make national news. Big city Brooklyn, Ny vs. Small City Batavia, Ny. Wow, that would be a story.
There two bright spots in Batavia, NY. One The Muckdogs, the other bright spot in Batavia, Ny Genesee Community College.
Keep up the good work Muckdogs, I will be cheering for you. Good luck the rest of the season.
