Photos: Local law enforcement running commercial vehicle checkpoints today

By Howard B. Owens

Batavia PD, the Sheriff's Office and State Police are coordinating a commercial vehicle enforcement detail today at two locations -- Oak Street and Ellicott Street. All vehicles must pass through the checkpoints, but officers are specifically looking for enforcement issues related to commercial vehicles. Vehicles that need a more detailed inspection are directed either to a location near the Thruway toll booths or behind Falleti Ice Arena.

Normally, I am against these Bagdad checks. It reminds me of Kabul. Now having said that, and I do not know why so many police patrols were needed, but anything that will reduce the Truck traffic on RT 63 is welcome. Just the other day a Truck rolled over in E Bethany on Rt 63. Can not count the accidents and deaths caused by (mostly Canadian) trucks ob Rt 63 over the years. All just cutting across from Mtr Morris just to save a couple of bucks..Villages like Pavilion are bombarded on a daily basis, and these truck serve no economic benefit to us.

Fred,
No econominal benefit to you or others huh? You do realize those trucks are carrying freight that you and I buy every day correct? How could you possibly say that. You have no idea what they are carrying or where the product is going or coming from. Not running i90 saves drivers hundreds of dollars not just a few dollars. Example to run the 90 from Henrietta to the PA line is over 100.00 for a truck. If they do that run three times a week, round trip that's 600.00 savings. That's a tank of fuel. If you don't want trucks in your precious town then get ready to pay more. Trucking works one way and one way onky, any cost to the driver are past on to the end consumers.
A little research goes a long way. Just remember one thing, trucks have the same right to be on the road as you do. They are doing a job that not to many people want to do. Just think what would happen if truck drives stopped moving freight?

Are the city police actually trained what to inspect on a commercial vehicle? Another money grab for the state.... Fred, trucks use Rt.63 as a SHORTCUT.... Batavia to Henrietta on 90 is around 28-29 miles-then south to Groveland on 390 is around 38 miles(not sure, can't remember exact mileage)-so you're talking about 65-68 miles,+ toll(look up 5 axle 53' trailer on ezpass website). Groveland exit to Batavia via 36-63 is easily 1/2 the mileage and time, plus fuel savings, when you average between 5-7 mpg you need to watch your costs. Believe me,when I'm heading back to Oakfield from Elmira or Bath,I'm not going to Henrietta and run the Thruway. What I wish is more speed enforcement on Rt.63, as it has and will be a dangerous road, especially in winter, when you have an Ontario plated semi riding your a**-look at the idiot they caught last week forcing people off road in Covington on Rt 63..... just remember this Fred-if trucks stop, this country stops. No gas,no food,no medical supplies(and gases).....people better start thanking farmers and truckers, because if it wasn't for them,we'd starve and have to walk everywhere........

"Are the city police actually trained what to inspect on a commercial vehicle? Another money grab for the state.... Fred, trucks use Rt.63 as a SHORTCUT...."

ALL police departments are trained for commercial vehicle inspections. It's not a money grab at all as this is routine across N.Y., and other states.

As far as a shortcut, you miss the mark again. By your thinking process, trucks don't make deliveries anywhere in Batavia?

"All just cutting across from Mtr Morris just to save a couple of bucks..Villages like Pavilion are bombarded on a daily basis, and these truck serve no economic benefit to us."

You were able to make your comment via your computer, laptop, netbook, iPad, or whatever electronic device you used to make your comment with, thanks to trucks as your device was loaded on a trailer hauled by those trucks. All of the electronic components contained in your device were trucked to the manufacturer.

Just an FYI Fred, everything you use each and everyday was trucked in some part or another. Everything! The food you eat, your furniture, clothing, your vehicle, the parts for your vehicle, everything.

Without trucks, you'd have nothing.

Thank you Dan!

Fred, Do you realize that while you eat, put on your clothes wash your clothes, sit on your furniture and lay on your bed- it was the truck driver who brought it to you? Brought to you by your local and long distance truck driver!

As for all those policemen? Trust me, you want them checking those trucks out thoroughly. DOT is in one of those pictures. I can tell you first hand, no trucker welcomes all too well. And here's a similar video of what they go through:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ntxoy5zpATI&ab_channel=TheGrandIslandIn…

I'd rather they have 20 DOT, police, sheriff or State troopers than have someone who's driving unsafe equipment. Trucker's know their trucks, they know how it's supposed to be in working order with Pre/Post trips. They are supposed to check on their vehicle every so often.

Next time you go shopping, take a look around. Next time you see a truck driver he's got a load of something you need on that truck. It can be 14,000 lbs. or 80,000. While you also think about that, remember their only doing what the need to to survive to. Which is keeping the economy alive.

Sincerely, A retired truck driver

Fred. You know what I hope?
I hope that, as you read the comments about "everything" you eat, or have, being shipped or delivered to you by trucks, you are relaxing in your homemade, rocking chair (made ENTIRELY from wood grown on your land - wood that has never seen a truck), and you are munching on an apple - grown on your own apple tree - a tree that has never seen a truck.
That's what I hope, Fred!
Of course, it's only my opinion, but, I think I now realize the types of people that gave the word 'ASSUME' the bad reputation.

Were they doing it both north and southbound on Rt.63? I can imagine the frustrated drivers behind the semis if they were backing traffic up.....they used to do it by Chapins-which would have been a better place,as there is only 1 stoplight at Chapins, but thanks to the brilliant DOT,only ONE lane each way.As far as not stopping in Batavia-do you see the trucks that park by the DMV at night to go into Tim Hortons,or the trucks that sometimes pull into Tops to buy some supplies? Not alot of money, but the sales tax does add up over time.....BTW,I don't see any DOT vans-the yellow NYS ones, but there has been one sitting at the DOT yard on Rt.5 by Devil's Rock for the past few weeks.....

It's nice to see insults can be hurled from your " "everything" you eat, or have, being shipped or delivered to you by trucks, you are relaxing in your homemade, rocking chair (made ENTIRELY from wood grown on your land - wood that has never seen a truck), and you are munching on an apple - grown on your own apple tree - a tree that has never seen a truck."

Good luck with the fertilizer. You know where to go if you need it? It won't take very much imagination :)

As you quoted almost an entire paragraph from my comment, Lisa, I'm going to step out on a limb and 'ASSUME' your comment was aimed at what I wrote. Does that sound like a fair assumption to you?

I certainly don't know what 'insults' you refer to. Care to explain?

See, all I did was read where (and, yes, this is my opinion) several commenters made statements that made it sound like they know EVERYTHING about Fred's possessions, eating habits, etc. It wasn't me that wrote, "... while you eat, put on your clothes wash your clothes, sit on your furniture and lay on your bed- it was the truck driver who brought it to you? Brought to you by your local and long distance truck driver!" -- NOPE, Lisa. That was YOU that appeared to know where Fred's food, clothing, furniture, etc came from.

It wasn't ME, Lisa, that wrote, "Just an FYI Fred, everything you use each and everyday was trucked in some part or another. Everything! The food you eat, your furniture, clothing, your vehicle, the parts for your vehicle, everything." -- NOPE, Lisa, that wasn't me that wrote that. It was Raymond Richardson.

So, tell me, Lisa - if you can.
Who appears to be ASSUMING here?

And, again, if you can, where is said INSULT?
