Multiple callers report the sound of a single gunshot on the Southside

By Howard B. Owens

Dispatchers report several callers say they heard the sound of a gunshot, possibly a shotgun, somewhere on the Southside of Batavia.

Calls have come in from Watson, Maple, Thorpe, Liberty and Otis streets.

Police officers are converging on the area.

UPDATE 12:05 a.m.: There's been nothing new to report on this.

Billy, the difference between a gunshot and a firecracker, or fireworks, is a gunshot will have two distinct sounds, the first sound is the blast of the shot, and the second is the round, or bullet, breaking the sound barrier.

A firecracker, or fireworks, has one explosive sound from the black powder exploding all at once.

Last Christmas eve, I could hear gunshots from West Webster, while outside talking to my neighbor on the patio. You could hear the two sounds I described, clearly.
