Photo: Hawley Hots opens on Center Street

By Howard B. Owens

A little bit of snow -- and it was a very little bit -- hasn't kept Steve Hawley (pictured above) from opening Hawley Hots outside of Glass Roots on Center Street today. Steve said he'll be open daily from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Austin Powers: A what?
Goldmember: A shmoke und a pancake. You know, a flapjack und a shigarette? No? Shigar und a waffle? No? Pipe und a crepe? No? Bong und a blintz? No? Well, then there ish no pleashing you.
Austin Powers: That's not right...)

I love street vendors. We even go out of our way to stop in towns or cities when we are traveling that we know have sidewalk food vendors. There is just something "festive" about it. My understanding is that Batavia discourages them by not allow them on municipal property. If that is correct, and it may not be, it would seem to be another bit of questionable wisdom by a city that always seems to be trying to attract people to visit.

On my first visit to Hawleys Hots I had something called a Hoopie Burger (I think) with meat sauce and onions and it was superb -- including the toasted roll. The folks were friendly, the food good, and, for $3, a major bargain!

(BTW Wayne, they did have white hots :) -- the sausage and peppers would be nice)

Don't know if you "supply side, free market, gurus noticed... but just 2 weeks after the City "permitted" a new hot dog vendor to set up shop just 2 blocks away from Hawley Hots, Hawley has closed it down.

Now I've been told {thru the grapevine} that Hawley was planning on doing this for some time(?), and that it had nothing to do with the new competition(?). Well if you believe that then I have some oceanfront property in Arizona that I would like to sell you.

Way to go Batavia.
