Today's Poll: Which position most closely matches yours on immigration?

Once again proving your hypothesis, Howard. "People just love them some big government when it serves their point of view" (paraphrased)

I think the basic premise of immigration is much simpler than all those choices. America is the most sought after destination of permenance bar none. We are the most generous in both opportunity for those willing to work and the most benevolant to those who have nothing. For that abounding blessing, we ask a few simple things. Come here legally and openly, take the time to do as millions of others have done before and become a citizen, work, pay your just due (taxes), and stay on the right side of the law. Adhere to those simple requests or be sent back. With so great an abundance comes a very small cost, bear it gratefully or surrender the blessing. In shorter terms, option #2

"Come here legally and openly ... "

If only it worked that way.

When you deny people the opportunity to come here then you can hardly blame them for coming any way they can for the work, when there's work to be had.

Also, your formulation presumes people wanting to stay and become citizens, not coming here to work and returning home, which is fine, too.

Why shouldn't it work that way? Hundreds of thousands of people do it every year. I reject the idea that the system is too hard, too expensive, too inaccessible, or whatever other excuse people use for not going through the very same process that millions of others have done through the years. We have a path to citizenship that is not so oppressive that it prevents the multitudes that successfully navigate it every year. We also have a work visa program and people avail themselves of that all the time. Getting all the benefits without putting in any personal equity is not sustainable under any system of immigration, nor should it be.

Howard allowing immigrants to come here openly without any control will cause more damage than good. Today is not the same as yesterday. Immigrants in the past are not the same as those of the present. There is a lot hate in today’s world towards the US and democracy. Threats to the US are numerous and real. You living in your perfect dream world that, all immigrants are here to live a better life is asinine. It is not just terrorist that threatens our security but, drug cartels and gangs threaten us and they are also, south and north of our borders.

Like I have stated, I do not believe in closing our borders. Let’s face fact this country has become what it is from immigration. That being stated today is a different world and we need to control our borders and investigate and validate who we allow in. Our social services are being drained by some of the same so called people you claim are coming here to live the “American Dream!” MS13 is not American born gang and yet they have made it into the US. Drug Cartels are moving across our borders daily because, we do not control our borders the way we should. We limit our Law Enforcement Officers and handicap them in their performance of their duties and denying efficient/effective law enforcement.

Sorry but, allowing open borders allows evil easy access to come right in. Howard do you feel terrorists, drug cartels and gangs have the same rights towards the "American Dream"? After all they are immigrants too.

Clearly, John, you haven't read what I've written. I'm not going to debate you about a topic when you fail to grasp my previous statements on the topic. It's very frustrating -- and I've seen you do it to others -- to have you invent positions for people and then argue against it.

Howard you have stated in the past (On previous immigration articles that you commented on.) that, you believe we should have open borders. Having open borders would lead to little or no control of our borders. So, I am really not incorrectly addressing you. You have been for open borders in the past. Did you change your mind

So, when you write a comment such as the following it is known what you truly believe.

"Come here legally and openly ... "

"If only it worked that way."

I merely stated above why I disagree with open borders. Yes there are some immigrants who cross for work only but, as we have already seen. Even they bring a criminal element.
