Today's Poll: Would you define yourself as ...

By Howard B. Owens

The US Libertarian Party is the third largest political party in the United States[9] (as of 2008, 235,500 registered voters) and asserts the following to be core beliefs of Libertarianism:

Libertarians support maximum liberty in both personal and economic matters. They advocate a much smaller government; one that is limited to protecting individuals from coercion and violence. Libertarians tend to embrace individual responsibility, oppose government bureaucracy and taxes, promote private charity, tolerate diverse lifestyles, support the free market, and defend civil liberties.

Sounds great to me!

I consider myself a moderately conservative non political liberal progressive Fibbertarian. I like to think I can remain civil when it comes to civil liberties and I can tolerate almost anything or anybody for a little while. Just don't get on my nerves.

You say the nicest things, but I am and always will be an independent (small i) and a non-conformist to the point of almost tragically hip. (great band too by the way)

Dave, there's a difference between being a libertarian and being a Libertarian.

I'm small "l," independent, non-partisan. And only libertarian where it doesn't conflict with my localism.

I quite understand that, Howard. And I know you are a libertarian (small l) also. I guess even Libertarians have rules which they think all libertarians should adhere to, or you can't be one. I reject that every time. I believe in individual thought and expression, not group think. I think you do too, at least I hope so anyway. I have been termed everything from naive to iconoclastic for my ideals. I believe there is a way to work together, be it local, state or national government without jeopardizing security or anyones right to "Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness". I've had it said to me that people won't behave or do the right things by others, unless they are forced to. (Liberal Statism) Also I've heard that we have to protect ourselves with power internationally and law and order at home. (Right Wing Statism) Not much difference to me. I believe in the goodness of people generally and I think everyone could live together, at least in this country, without being forced to. Not everyone believes that obviously which is why they allow others to gain control and make laws to keep themselves in power. Then they fight over which flavor of statism is right. I'm gonna form my own country a-la Peter Griffin, then we'll see.
