I think the problem lies with political parties that are more concerned with maintaining their power and allegiances to their corporate donors. How could raising taxes on a minority be met with such opposition? Our representatives aren't representing their constituents. The majority of their constituents are not wealthy, may not even be middle-class. Politics is business. Until that changes, which I hope it indeed is, the laws will favor those who currently control the power: the plutocrats.
You raise the cap from where it is now at ~100K up to 150Kish. The Social Security cap hasn't been raised since Reagan did it 30 years ago. Based on the rate of inflation, it's not unreasonable to go even higher.

One road is not a long term job, but roads need to be replaced just like houses need to be be built or rebuilt and painted. If you are good at what you do one job segues flawlessly into the next for many years, sometimes multiple decades. Ask your elders about that.
