Witnesses help police catch burglary suspects in Oakfield

By Howard B. Owens
Steven Mullen Robert Propst

Two men are in custody after an alert neighbor on Weatherwax Road in Oakfield spotted a possible burglary in progress this morning and called in a description of the vehicle as it left the scene.

A Town of Oakfield worker heard the description of the red Dodge Dakota on his radio and spotted the vehicle as it turned from Route 262, heading south on Route 63, and contacted dispatchers. He or another witness reported the vehicle turned onto Galloway Road.

Within minutes, troopers Holly Hansell and Stephen Kosowski were on scene and stopped the vehicle on South Pearl and Batavia Oakfield Townline roads.

Taken into custody on suspicion of burglary in the third degree were Steven Mullen, 25, of 3035 Maple Ave., Oakfield, and Robert Propst, 31, of 9 Raymond St., Batavia.

Mullen was jailed on $10,000 bail and Propst is being held pending arraignment in Genesee County Court.

So "happy" to see our local law enforcement finally found the time to do something! Congrats to the New York State Parole Board for their insightfulness to allow these guys early release.Maybe if these agencies were not spending time covering for their apparent shortcomings, they would exert more effort to rid our communties of miscreants.

No Howard....not the point of my observation. I am merely pointing out that the Parole Board has a tendency to allow these repeat felons early release under supervision and then do not closely monitor their "activities". I have repeatedly attempted to notify various entities of continual "bad acts" of which nothing is ever done. Point of fact: Look at the conduct of recent in Corfu with "law enforcement"!!! They now want to lay blame on someone that was concerned about possible wrongdoing. My personal gratitude to Mr. Peterson for his courage. Maybe...just maybe a good long hard look of activities of others involved may lead to criminal charges, even though they may hold a position in "law enforcement".

Paul,

neither of these guys were on parole. see the maximum expiration date on thier DOC file. Steve Mullen's parole expired on 6/4/2011 and Rob Propst was held in state prison and "maxed out" (meaning he did the entire sentence and would not have been on parole.

I agree with Howard, "Geesh", sounds like blaming the system (cops/parole/court) for the criminal behavior!

Kudo's to the good citizens who helped law enforcement out on this one!
