Carmine Samuel "Sam" Scopano

Oakfield - Carmine Samuel “Sam” Scopano, 67, of Oakfield, longtime proprietor with his family of the Oakfield Hotel and Scopano’s Paradis Lanes in Oakfield, passed away on Wednesday, January 27, 2016 at the Buffalo VA Medical Center.

Mr. Scopano was born July 27, 1948 in Batavia, a son of the late John P. Scopano Sr. and Ann DiCasolo Scopano.

Sam was a 1966 graduate of Oakfield-Alabama Central School, where he was a member of the undefeated football team making All-County both as an offensive and defensive lineman.

Sam proudly served his country with the United States Army during the Vietnam War. A member of Hiram G. Luhman American Legion Post No. 626 in Alabama, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Veness - Strollo Post 1602 in Batavia, Sam attended the Brunswick School of Bowling where he learned how to maintain the bowling alley surfaces, the electronic scoring system and the bowling machines. He was recently elected to the United States Bowling Congress Hall of Fame in 2015 for his meritorious services as a longtime proprietor of Scopano's Paradise Lanes in Oakfield.

Sam loved working with his hands and mind and developed a real passion for fixing and repairing anything electronic. He also enjoyed woodworking and carpentry. He is remembered as caring, friendly, generous man who was always willing to lend a hand to one in need.

He is survived by his brother, John P. (Lois) Scopano, Jr. of Oakfield; his sister, Judy (James) Gilbert of Bergen; and many loving aunts, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Friends may call on Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Burdett & Sanford Funeral Home, 11 Maple Avenue, Oakfield, where his services will be held on Saturday at  10 a.m. Burial, with full military honors, will be held at St. Cecilia’s Cemetery.
