Kevin E. Hanley

  Kevin E. Hanley, 63, passed away at home in Johnstown, NY on Friday April 28th, 2017 after a long courageous fight with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease). Kevin was born in Batavia, NY on June 28, 1953 to the late James B. and Norma (O’Neil) Hanley.

Kevin graduated from Notre Dame High School, where he excelled in cross-country and track. He won many league championships and held the two mile record for over forty years. Kevin graduated from Niagara University where he won many races and was All-State runner in 1971 and 1972. Kevin managed stores for F.W. Woolworth Co. in Rochester NY, Erie PA, Pittsburgh PA, Utica NY, Schenectady NY and Albany NY. Kevin then owned and operated a Ben Franklin store in Gloversville NY with his wife Nancy. Kevin was the manager of Big Lots in Troy NY when he was forced to retire early due to this horrible disease. Kevin was an avid Boston Red Sox and Buffalo Bills fan. He enjoyed golfing and fishing at his camp. Kevin was a member of the Holy Trinity Parish in Johnstown NY.

He is survived by his wife Nancy, his brother James Hanley from Rochester NY, his son Gary Call Hanley (Julie) from Nashville TN, his step-son Robert Kraemer (Sarah) from Johnstown and his three wonderful grandchildren Kevin from Nashville, Madelyne and Michael from Johnstown. Kevin is also survived by his favorite Uncle James O'Neill from Flushing NY. Kevin also leaves behind his constant companion, Irish Setter Blarney.

We would like to thank the caring people at the ALS Regional Center in Albany Trish, Liz, Suzie, Kathy and Dr. Miller. A special thanks to Dr. Wymer for all your inspiration. Also a heartfelt thanks to everyone at Mountain Valley Hospice. To our hospice nurse Anna Marie, who 8 months ago you walked into our home and held our hands and touched our hearts. To our home health aide, Laura, thank you for your, compassion and reassurance. Thank you to Kevin's special caretakers and friends, Brenda and Cheryl. A message from Kevin: "This DISEASE DID NOT and COULD NOT take away my faith. This DISEASE DID NOT and COULD NOT touch what was in my heart. See you on the other side. Keep the Faith..."

Family and friends are invited to call on Thursday May 4, 2017 from 12:30-2:30PM at Gilmartin Funeral Home & Cremation Company, Inc. 329-333 West Main Street Batavia, New York 14020. A 3:00PM Mass of Christian Burial will be held on immediately flowing calling hours at Resurrection Parish (St. Joseph’s) 303 East Main St. Batavia, NY 14020. He will be laid to rest in St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Batavia.
