Batavia - Irene S. Cappiello, 97 of Batavia passed away on Saturday, (September 23, 2023) at Wyoming County Skilled Nursing Facility in Warsaw.

Mrs. Cappiello was born February 21, 1926 in Batavia, a daughter of the late Joseph and Stella (Kosiorek) Potwora.

A devout catholic, Irene was a life long parishioner of Resurrection Parish - St. Joseph's Church in Batavia. She was an avid golfer and in younger years enjoyed league bowling. Irene worked for a time for the Genesee County Board of Elections, but first and foremost was a devoted wife and mother.

Along with her late husband, Cappy, Irene lived for many years on a street they named themselves: Evergreen Drive in Batavia. Following Cappy's retirement, he and Irene enjoyed snow birding in California and Texas for over 35 years which allowed them to be near their children and provided ample time to golf.

Irene is the wife of the late Roland R. Cappiello who passed away in 2021.

Surviving are her children, Anne L. (Darrel) Crotzer of Batavia, Susan M. (Joseph) Copp of La Jolla, Cali., James R. (Bobbi) Cappiello of Willis, Texas, and Michelle M. (Tom) Clattenburg of Batavia; grandchildren, Kells Copp, Kelley (Paul) Caffo, Jamie (Andrew) Maguire, Devon (Gabe) Moraes, and Tara Clattenburg; great-grandchildren, Levy and Stella Moraes; Greta Maguire; sisters-in-law, Rita Potwora and Maxine Potwora both of Batavia.

Irene is preceded in death by her son, William M. Cappiello; and siblings, Joseph Potwora, Richard Potwora, Rita Potwora, Edward Potwora, Dorothy (late Edward) Franasiak, and Eleanor (late Deacon John) Stone.

Family and friends are invited to call on Thursday from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Bohm-Calarco-Smith Funeral Home, 308 East Main Street in Batavia (please use School Street entrance).  Irene 's Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday (September 29, 2023) from Resurrection Parish - St. Joseph's Church, 303 East Main Street in Batavia.  Entombment will be in St. Joseph Mausoleum in Batavia.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Resurrection Parish or Crossroads House, PO Box 403, Batavia, New York 14021.  Please leave a condolence, share a story, or light a candle at www.bataviafuneralhomes.com.
