Age 90, of Batavia, died peacefully Sunday March 20, 2016 at Medina Memorial Hospital. She was born October 29, 1925 in Batavia, NY, a daughter of the late Edward J. and Cecelia (Hughes) Hinkson also preceded in death by her husband, Edward C. Zack whom she married June 8, 1946; son, Michael Zack in 2003; brothers, Bernard, James and Robert Hinkson; sister, Margaret "Mickey" Yasses and her dog, Buddy. 

Rita was a member of Resurrection Parish (St. Joseph's Church), she worked at GTE Sylvania for 21 years where she was a union steward and secretary, she also worked 10 years for Eastman Kodak Co. A life member and past president of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary Post #1602 in Batavia. 

Surviving are her beloved granddaughters, Crystal (Shane) Leddon of Batavia, Michelle (Phillip Sage) Clor of Batavia and Elizabeth (Joseph) Vallese of Oakfield; great-grandchildren, Matthew, Macy Clor & Langdon Sage, Anthony & Andrew Vallese, Mason & Brooke Leddon; brother-in-law, Edwin Yasses of Batavia along with several nieces and nephews.

Age 91, of Oakfield, died peacefully Tuesday March 22, 2016 at Rochester General Hospital, her family at her side. She was born on November 8, 1924 in Attica, NY, daughter of the late Nicholas and Lydia (Eichenberger) Bartholomew also preceded in death by her beloved husband, Edmond Nanni; daughter, Christine Allen; siblings, Frank and Joseph Bartholomew and Marguerite Nanni. 

Mrs. Nanni was a member of St. Padre Pio Parish in Oakfield, an avid golfer, enjoyed reading, her computer and Facebook. A true "sports fanatic", she loved to watch professional golf, the Buffalo Bills and closely followed the Syracuse University basketball team. Marian's true joy in life came from her family, especially her children and grandchildren. 

Surviving are her children, Gary (Laurie) Nanni and Jamie (Gary) DiSalvo all of Oakfield; grandchildren, Lynn (Nick) Gehlert, Angus Abrams, Jennifer (Pete) Shaffer, Michelle and Christopher Nanni, Matthew (Jessica) DiSalvo, Christy (fiance, Daniel Campbell) DiSalvo, Kaeleigh, Nicole and Nathaniel DiSalvo, Mark (Kathy) Allen, Kevin (Kristie) Allen; great-grandchildren, Jake Gehlert, Levi DiSalvo, Addison, Emily & Chase Allen; son-in-law, David (Carol) Allen of Batavia along with many nieces and nephews.

Don served with the US Air Force. He was a 1958 graduate of Columbia High School and went on to SUNY Brockport for his undergraduate and graduate degrees in Health and Physical Education, later completing advanced degrees in school administration at University at Albany. Don began his teaching and coaching career at Churchville-Chili High School, moving in 1970 to Scotia-Glenville, where he became that district’s first Drug and Health Education Coordinator and, later, Assistant High School Principal. In 1979, Don moved to Trumansburg, where he enjoyed 10 years as High School Principal, before becoming assistant superintendent of the Vestal Central School District. Continuing to progress up the administrative ladder, Don first became superintendent of schools in Mt. Markham, then returned to western New York in 1992, spending the rest of his full-time career as superintendent of the Livonia Central School District. Although he officially retired in 1997, Don was believed he had more to contribute to the field of educational administration. Thus in his retirement, he enjoyed numerous interim positions as principal and superintendent in Perry, Dansville, Geneseo. Alexander, and Warsaw Central School districts. Throughout his “retirement,” Don served as visiting assistant professor in the Department of Educational Administration at The College at Brockport, and was proud to spend several years as chair of that department. In 2011, he returned to the K-12 field as superintendent of the Keshequa Central School District, from which he retired in 2014. A Masters level track and field athlete, Don competed in the Empire State Games, medaling in discus and shot put. With his wife, Sarah, Don bred Smooth Fox Terriers under the Foxcove kennel name and was a longtime member of the American Fox Terrier Club where he served on the Board of Governors until his death. He was proud to help found and serve as first president of the Lake Effect Fox Terrier Club of Western New York. In addition, Don was a former Rotarian (Trumansburg), member of the Trumansburg American Legion, and former member of the Silver Lake Country Club. He was an avid hunter and fisherman who loved camping, gardening, bird watching, golfing and being outdoors. He had a glorious bass baritone voice and sang in many church choirs during his younger years.

He is survived by his wife; Sarah (Perkins) Covell whom he married on March 14, 2000; a daughter Michelle Strenk of Scotia; sons Scott (Christine) Covell of Fairport and Tom (Cheryl) Covell of Trumansburg; step-daughter Keturah (Vincent Reedhead) Bosarge of Perry; step-son Adrian (Jessica) Bosarge of Lockport; sisters Lucy Ortega of Cedar Rapids, IA and Sue (Russell) Arelian of Sand Lake NY; brother Charles (Carolyn) Covell of Calcium NY; 10 grandchildren, Matthew and Tyler Strenk, Sam, Nick and McKenzie Covell, Josephine, Lillian, Sydney and Molly Covell and Gideon Bosarge, along with many nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Covert was born December 20, 1912 in Shelby Center, a daughter of the late Arthur James and Cora Bell (Parsons) Johnston.  Predeceased in death by her sisters Bernice Hewitt and Hildred Ehrens. 

Pauline’s beloved husband, Orson Covert passed away on April 24^th, 1996.  The couple began their 62 year journey of wedded bliss in March of 1934.  Their devotion to one another was steadfast, as reflected in Pauline’s account of how she and Orson wrote letters to one another, every single day while Orson was stationed overseas during WWII.

Both Pauline and Orson were baptized by immersion at the Oakfield-Alabama Baptist Church close to the time they had become married.  When they settled their home in Basom, it was decided they would attend their neighboring church, Basom United Methodist until its closure, which took Pauline to Alabama United Methodist where she worshiped regularly for the past several years. 

Pauline is survived by a niece, Gail (David) Clarke of Rochester and Florida as well as many neighbors and friends, all of which will hold her memory dear.

Pauline enjoyed entertaining friends that would “call on her” later in life, with animated narratives of her 103 years of adventures and experiences.

As a young child, Pauline vividly described the excitement that ensued in the Town of Shelby neighborhood where she grew up, when the New York State Troopers would pass through on horseback, patrolling every few months (circa 1920).

Her most endeared topic of recollection was that of she and Orson’s passion for dancing.  Especially entertaining were the stories of frequenting barn dances, early on during the days of prohibition and then later becoming steady customers at the Indian Falls Hotel, where they would dance the night away.  She chuckled while reliving how friends all piled into old roadsters, the women typically relegated to the rumble seat, even in the dead of winter, keeping themselves warm by hunkering down underneath heavy Buffalo Blankets.  A favorite memory was of how she and Orson “dressed to the nines” to attend a ball where Guy Lombardo was the bandleader.

Warsaw ~ Gerald L. Merrill, age 80 , of Short Street, passed away on Tuesday morning (March 22, 2016) at the East Side Nursing Home.

      He was born November 24, 1935 in Warsaw, N.Y., a son of the late LaVerne and Geraldine Whitmore Merrill.

      Mr. Merrill was veteran of the U S Army and served in Germany.  He was a member of the Warsaw Fire Department and enjoyed driving truck for Baker and Baker milk haulers.  Aside from his family, his next biggest passion was doing mechanic work, especially on the trucks at Potter DeWitt, where he worked for many years.

     He will be sadly missed by his loving wife of 57 years, Mary Lee Donnelly Merrill; his daughter, Linda L. Merrill of Warsaw; his son, Robert (Karen) Merrill of Richfield, OH; his brother, Donald Merrill of Warsaw; his sisters, Barbara Ewell of FL and Lori Merrill (Charlotte Hamon) of Warsaw; his sister-in-law, Patricia Merrill of LeRoy, along with many nieces and nephews.

     In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers, Norman, Roger, David and James (Diana), and his brother-in-law, Vincent Ewell.

Age 73, of Batavia, died Sunday afternoon March 20, 2016 at Unity Hospital in Rochester with her family at her side. She was born February 18, 1943 in Batavia, NY, a daughter of the late Elmer and Rowena (Lortz) Kroldart. 

Sandy was a member of Resurrection Parish (former St. Joseph's) and its Sodality; she worked for Batavia Ophthalmology for many years and was a volunteer at UMMC and St. Joseph's School where she was known as "Grandma Sandy." She was member of the "Sixties Girls", made up of ladies that graduated in 1960 from Batavia High. Sandy enjoyed her trips to Florida during the winter months, but her greatest joy was being a grandmother. 

Surviving is her husband of 31 years, Frank Coppola of Batavia; loving children, Joseph (Renee) Falkowski of Batavia and Lisa Falkowski of Corfu, Mark (Nancy) Coppola of Oswego and Kristen (Donna) Coppola of Pittsburgh, PA; sister, Donna (David) Edwards of Silver Creek, NY; her 5 adoring grandchildren, Rachel, Heather & Dylan Coppola, Joseph and Faith Falkowski along with several nieces, nephews and cousins.                                                    

The family will be present on Wednesday March 23, 2016 from 4 - 8pm at the Michael S. Kevin P. Heiman, Pavilion, passed away Saturday March 19, 2016. He was born June 27, 1982 in Batavia NY, son of Phil and Angela Heiman. 
He will be remembered for his easy going personality, contagious smile and his willingness to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. He considered a stranger just a friend he hadn’t met yet. His free spirit led him to love all adventures including fishing, hunting, camping, hiking to find waterfalls, and sky diving. He loved animals and took great joy in gardening. He had a knack for engaging in lengthy conversations with all who crossed his path; he truly listened and always pondered other perspectives. His warm heart and thoughtfulness made others feel special. He was a 2000 graduate of Pavilion Central School where he made a lasting impression on teachers and friends. He was also a hard worker who enjoyed a career as a mason. 
Surviving along with his parents, his sister Caroline (Stephen) Favata, his brother Scott (Eva Valente), maternal grandmother Carmela Ilacqua, paternal grandparents Elmer and Marie Heiman, along with many aunts, uncles and cousins. He was predeceased by his grandfather, Anthony Ilacqua.

Batavia - Kyle A. Couchman, age 47, of Batavia, passed away on Thursday, March 17, 2016 at Rochester General Hospital.

Kyle was born August 10, 1968 in Buffalo, the son of Donald Bigham and Joan (Vroman) Bigham of Greece.

An avid freelance photographer, Kyle was a member of the Western New York Photography Group. He loved fishing, deep sea diving and computer gaming. Kyle will be remembered by many for his banter on local radio stations and online news sources.

Surviving along with his parents are his loving and devoted wife, Theresa “Terrey” B. (Schiavi) Lee of Batavia; his children, Ryan Couchman and  Nicole Couchman; two step-sons, James Preedom of Albion and Mark Flaming of Pavilion; his granddaughter,  Avery Flaming of Pavilion; his sister, Kelly (Michael) Morgott of Virginia; nephew,  Zachary Morgott of Virginia; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Frank Schiavi, III of Batavia, Cheryl (Allen) Gillette of Cohocton, Kathie (Richard) Boyce of Lakeland, Florida and Fran Schiavi of Benson, Arizona; Kyle is also survived by his three cats that he adored: Misty, Luisia and Eunice.

Mary E. Egloff (nee Ouderkirk), of Corfu,  passed away Wednesday (March 16, 2016) at Brothers of Mercy surrounded by her children.

 

Mary was born in Penn Yan, New York on April 14, 1937 to the late Carl and Alma Ouderkirk. She married the late Richard F. Egloff on October 2, 1954. She was the sister of the late Ellen (Jack) Drew.

 

Mary was a member of Pembroke Community Church and Corfu Senior Citizens Club. Mary spent her life as a housewife, raising and enjoying her family. She loved camping and traveling around the United States. In her later years, she was accompanied by her faithful companion, Ric Maurer.

 

Mary is survived by four children, Michael (Beth), Pamela (Ron) Brady, Cathy (Dave) Miller, and Carol (Bill) Wilson; and a brother Robert (Roberta) Ouderkirk of Seattle, Washington. She was blessed with 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. 

 

Friends are invited to calling hours held at Pembroke Community Church, 692 Main Road Corfu NY, 14036 on Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. Funeral will be held on Friday at 11 a.m, also at Pembroke Community Church.
