Franklyn M. Knapp

Franklyn M. Knapp, 85, of Batavia passed away on Saturday April 16, 2016 at New York State Veterans Home in Batavia. He was born August 3, 1930 in Auburn, New York to late John (Vera Greenizen) Knapp. Mr. Knapp is preceded in death by his beloved wife Noreen M. (Baudendistel) Knapp.

Mr. Knapp served in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He worked as a Lab Technician for nearly 50 years retiring from United Memorial Medical Center. Mr. Knapp was a member of the Model Airplane and Model Railroad Club along with being a Gun Club member and also the Alexander Volunteer Fire Department.

He is survived by his son John Knapp of Batavia; daughters Patricia (Wayne Burgess) Knapp of Marcellus; Barbara Knapp of Auburn and step son David Merritt of Stafford; grandchildren Matthew Hawker, Chelsea and Aaron Holbein; a great-grandchild Austin Hawker and ex-spouse, Aletha Knapp.

KAREN A. LAMKIN

Age 66, of Batavia, died peacefully Friday afternoon April 15, 2016 at Strong Memorial Hospital, her family at her side. She was born July 8, 1949 in Batavia, NY, daughter of the late Nicholas and Sara (Bucceri) Church also preceded in death by her husband, Frank Biegas. 

Karen was a member of Resurrection Parish and a self-employed hairdresser for many years. She enjoyed cooking, baking, trips to the casino and was an avid bowler. Karen was an animal lover, especially cats, a sports fan who followed the New Yankees, Buffalo Bills and Sabres. Her greatest joy was time spent with her husband, children and their families.

Surviving is her husband of 39 years, Richard Lamkin of Batavia; children, Candi Biegas of Batavia and her daughter, Alexis Warfle, Brandi (Joseph Barbato) Lamkin of Batavia and their son, Blake Barbato, Christine (Pete Gravante) Thornley and her children, Matthew Thornley and Christopher (Trish Smith) Thornley, Paul (Christine) Lamkin and their daughter, Rachael (Jessie) Weaver, Richard (Michelle) Lamkin and their children, Raymond (Amy Schmidt) Feldman, Ritchie & Nicholas Lamkin along with 2 great-grandchildren. 

The family will be present from 2-4 & 7-9pm on Tuesday April 19, 2016 at the MICHAEL S. Elizabeth "Betty" Tuchols Colby

Lancaster -- Elizabeth "Betty" Tuchols Colby, 84, of Lancaster, NY (formerly of Corfu, N.Y.) died peacefully Wednesday evening (April 13, 2016).
 
She is survived by her daughters, Luann (Clark) Saunders, Allyson Carlson and Susan (Bruce) Pfalzer and was also the mother of the late Karen M. Graham. She is survived by her 11 beloved grandchildren and 11 greatgrand children.  Betty is also survived by her sister-in-law Audrey Tuchols and her nephews Joseph George and John George.
 
The youngest of four children born to Leo and Mary (Suraf) Tuchols, Betty was predeceased by her brothers, John “Jack” Tuchols and Robert Tuchols and by her sister and brother-in-law Mary and Joseph George.
 
Betty was a talented painter and a well-loved art teacher in Pembroke and Alexander, NY.  She was also an avid traveler and took her family on many memorable trips, all of which she photographed prolifically.  She loved to play bridge and golf.  She was inspired and independent and will be held in our hearts always.
 
Friends and family are invited to celebrate Betty’s life from 6 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, April 17th, and from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Monday, April 18th, at the C. B. Beach & Son Mortuary, Inc., located at 4-6 Main St., Corfu N.Y.  A funeral service will be held from the mortuary at 12:30 p.m. on Monday, April 18th.

Timothy S. Slate

Timothy S. Slate, 61 of Batavia, passed away on Friday April 15, 2016 at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester. He was born December 19, 1954 in Hamilton, New York to Jesse (Patricia Foster) Slate of Attica.

Mr. Slate worked at Agway in Batavia. He served in the United States Army from 1974-1977 and then the Army National Guard from 1977 to 1997. Tim loved rebuilding and working on his custom Harley Davidson. He enjoyed playing guitar and NASCAR.

He is survived by his beloved wife Shirley A. (Higgins) Slate of Batavia; daughter Brooke (Timothy) Eck of Batavia, granddaughter Aeryn Eck; siblings Bonnie (Chuck) Myers of Silver Springs; Karl (Sue) Slate of Batavia; Hope (Ed) Knapp of Alexander, along with many nieces and nephews.

Brenda P. Sumeriski

Batavia - Brenda P. Sumeriski, 61, of Batavia, passed away on Sunday, April 10, 2016 at the Genesee County Nursing Home.

She was born April 14, 1954 in Batavia, a daughter of the late Robert and Virginia Nephew Sumeriski.

An active member of City Church, Brenda loved being around her children and grandchildren. She was a fan of the Buffalo Bills and NASCAR. She will be remembered by her family as having a heart of gold who would do anything for anyone.

She is survived by her children, Desiree (James Wroten) Sumeriski, Eugene (Stephanie) Sumeriski and  Jamie (Joe) Soto, all of Batavia and Heidi and Donna of Attica; four brothers, Robert (Tracy) Sumeriski of Georgia, Jerry (Karen) Sumeriski of Rochester, Ronnie (Ann) Sumeriski of Batavia and Jacob (Lucille) Sumeriski of Warsaw; two sisters, Linda Lyons of Rochester and Ella Evans of Batavia;  13 grandchildren and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

She is predeceased by her brother Paul Sumeriski.

There are no prior visiting hours. Friends and family are invited to a Celebration of Brenda’s life on Monday, April 18th from 4 to 5 p.m. at The City Church Generation Center, Center Street, Batavia.  All are encouraged to wear the color green, which was her favorite, in Brenda’s memory. LAWRENCE M. "LARRY" BARONE

LAWRENCE M. "LARRY" BARONE

Age 90, of Batavia, died Sunday morning April 10, 2016 at Unity Hospital in Rochester. He was born November 16, 1925 in Batavia. He was the last of 11 children of the late Louis and Sara (Coticchio) Barone, also preceded in death by his siblings, Frank, Tony, Dominic, Phillip, James, Peter, Joe, Louis, Florence and Margaret Barone. 

Mr. Barone served our country honorably as a member of the U.S. Army during World War II. A devote catholic he was a lifelong member and usher of Ascension Parish (former St. Anthony's), where his parents were 1 of the 10 founding families of the parish. He was a member of the first graduating class of the former St. Anthony's School. Larry worked for 33 years at Dohler-Jarvis and in security at Batavia Downs, he was an avid bowler, New York Yankees fan and enjoyed the horses at OTB. He had a love for dancing, singing and was even known to do some karaoke, but his greatest joy was his wife, children, and grandchildren. 

Surviving is his wife of 62 years, Angeline (Calandra) Barone of Batavia; children, Frank (Teri) of Corfu and his children, Christopher and Jennie Barone; Suzan (Vincent) Pellegrino of Stafford and their children, Vincent Pellegrino, Nicholas (Erin) Pellegrino, Angelina (Matthew) Pellegrino-Wolff, Karen (Joshua Secondo) Pellegrino; Tina (Mark) Adams of Batavia and their children, Benjamin and Gloria Adams; great-grandchildren, Mira, Antonio, Dominic, Mikalina, Carmelena and Lorenzo; sisters-in-law, Josephine and Mary Barone both of Batavia, Mary Mogavero of Derby and Pat Calandra of Orchard Park along with many nieces, nephews, great nieces/nephews and great-great nieces/nephews. 

The family will be present on Wednesday April 13, 2016 from 4 - 8PM at the Michael S. Tomaszewski Funeral & Cremation Chapel, LLC 4120 West Main Street Road Batavia, New York 14020 where prayers will be recited at 9:30AM Thursday April 14 followed by a mass of Christian Burial 10:00AM at Ascension Parish (Sacred Heart Site). Entombment will be in the Father T. Bernard Kelly Mausoleum at St. Joseph's Cemetery along with Military Honors and memorials in his memory are suggested to a charity of the donor's choice.

James N. Grodem

James N. Grodem died unexpectedly, April 8, 2016, age 24; beloved son of Peter and Robin (nee Bish) Grodem; loving brother of Samantha Grodem; cherished grandson of Charles and Dorothy (nee Kula) Bish and Jane (nee Sugg) and the late Thomas Grodem; James will be sadly missed by many aunts, uncles, cousins, family and friends.

The family will be present on Tuesday from 4-8 p.m. at the (Harris Hill Chapel) AMIGONE FUNERAL HOME, INC., 8440 Main St. (near Harris Hill Road), Buffalo, where a funeral service will be held on Wednesday at 10 a.m.. Interment to immediately follow in Evergreen Hill Cemetery, Corfu. Friends invited.

Jane Bartz

Batavia – Jane Brotherton Bartz, 87, of Batavia, went to be with her Heavenly Father on Wednesday (April 6, 2016) in Batavia, NY.

Born in Warsaw, NY, a daughter of the late James and Nellie Jane (Chamberlain) Brotherton, she and her siblings grew up on their parents’ dairy farm in Warsaw. On August 21, 1948, she married Henry L. Bartz at the First Baptist Church in Batavia, NY.  They lived in the house he built on Bank Street in Batavia until their growing family moved to a small farm in the Town of Bethany. 

Jane worked at P.W. Minor Shoe Factory, retiring in 1991.  At one time she was active in the Batavia Women’s Bowling League, and in the 1960’s and ‘70’s she and Henry enjoyed square dancing with the Batavia Twirlers Square Dance Club.  They loved camping (especially in the Adirondacks) with their family and in 1983, Henry and Jane traveled to Israel for 3 weeks.  In 1991, with their new 5th wheel camper, they traveled across the United States and then in 2001 camped across most of the country.

Jane was such a loving and kind, patient and considerate person who was full of compassion.  She was always willing to help, always putting others before herself.  She will be so sadly missed by her family.  Survivors include her husband of 67 years, Henry L. Bartz of Batavia; her children, Steven M. (Penny) Bartz of Stafford, Duane M. Bartz of Henrietta, Sharon M. (Rod) Douglass of Castorland, NY, Timothy M. (Teresa) Bartz of Corfu, Shawn M. James of Batavia, and Julie M. Bartz of Prescott, AZ; nine grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Jane was predeceased by a daughter, Vicki Lynn Bartz, a daughter-in-law, Karen Bartz, brothers, Sidney Brotherton and Robert Brotherton and sisters, Ruth Brotherton, Elgie Frain, Katie Burdick, Doris Miller, Norma Bauer Turybury, and Eleanor Post. 

Calling hours are Monday, April 11th from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Assembly of God Church, 24 North Spruce Street, Batavia, with Funeral Services immediately following.  Burial will be in Grandview Cemetery, Batavia.  Memorials may be made to the Assembly of God Church, 24 North Spruce Street, Batavia, NY 14020.

Edwin F. Helak

 Edwin F. Helak, 68, of Attica passed away suddenly at his home on Thursday April 7, 2016. He was born on March 31, 1948 in Buffalo to the late Florian and Joan (Kisiel) Helak.

Edwin was a member of the US Marine Corps and a retired Corrections officer of 30 years from Attica Correctional Facility. He was a graduate of Depew High School in 1965.  He was very active in the community along with serving as President of AYA Baseball as well as a youth baseball coach for over 10 years.  He was an avid golfer, hunter, gardener, and loved being outdoors. 

 Ed is survived by his loving wife of over 40 years Barbara A. (Slawatycki) Helak of Attica; a son Mark (Melissa) Helak of Lancaster; brother Paul (Dolly) Helak of Attica; sisters Margaret (Eugene) Weiss of Cheektowaga and Barbara Dobies of West Seneca; brother in law Ronald (Debbie) Slawatycki of Cheektowaga and sister in law Joanne Kirsch of Alexander along with many nieces and nephews.

THOMAS S. MITCHELL, SR.

THOMAS S. MITCHELL, SR.

Age 89, of Elba, died Wednesday evening April 6, 2016 at home with his family by his side. He was born June 6, 1926 in Astoria, Queens. An only child, he was raised by his mother, the late Emma (Rhind), also preceded in death by dear cousins, Charlotte (Ray) Buckhaults. 

Mr. Mitchell served our country as a member of the U.S. Army in the 94th Infantry during World War II, and as a member of the Constabulary, which was a post-war security force in the U.S. Occupation Zone of West Germany and Austria. He had a lifelong passion for learning, and to that end he pursued numerous hobbies. In his thirties he learned to fly. He held both single engine land and glider ratings. He was a member of the Long Island Soaring Society. A lifelong member of the EAA and a founding member of Gaines Valley Aviation/Airport in Gaines, NY. In years past he spent most Sundays at the East Bethany Airport visiting and flying with other local pilots. He also played guitar and his family has fond memories of Mom serenading the family with old country standards by Johnny Cash, Patsy Cline and Hank Williams while Dad played guitar. A passionate Buffalo Bills fan he followed the team closely and never missed a game. His other interests included being a licensed ham radio operator, call sign K2PUL and even taking piano lessons later in life. Professionally he installed and serviced printing presses for Heidelberg Eastern, Inc. for over 40 years as a member of IAM machinists union local #434. However, most importantly, he was the beloved patriarch of his family who will be remembered as a caring and generous husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. 

Surviving is his partner in marriage for 48 years, Grace (Furman) Mitchell of Elba; his children, Anna (David Lee) Fenton of Batavia, Thomas Mitchell, MD (Cynthia Mitchell, PA) of NC and Elaine (Scott) Say of Oakfield; grandchildren, Monique, Matthew, Tayler, Madison, Lukas, Isaac, Zachary and Jacob; great-grandchildren, Aidan and Alaska-Vela; sister-in-law, Lavina (Joseph) Elek.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                        The family will be present on Sunday April 10, 2016 from 2-4 & 7-9pm at the Michael S. Carol R. Kinsley

Carol R. Kinsley, 86, of Palm City, Fla., passed away on Friday, April 1, 2016 at the Terrace at Hobe Sound, Hobe Sound, Fla.

Born in Yonkers, NY, she had been a resident of Palm City for several years coming from Fort Meyers, Fla. She moved to Florida from LeRoy, NY.

She was a homemaker and had been a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Stuart.

Survivors include her daughters, Mary Jones of Evansville, Ind., Sharon Kinsley and her husband Gary of Holley, NY, Joni Kinsley and her husband Jeff Dougherty of Palm City, Eileen Siple of Bel Air, Md., Elizabeth Kinsley of Battle Creek, Mich., Judith Bolsei and her husband Phil of LeRoy, NY, and Virginia Stoneham and her husband John of LeRoy, NY; her son, Kevin Kinsley and his wife Agnieska of Darmstadt, Germany; her sister, Barbara DelRosario; 16 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Allan L. Kinsley; her daughter Marjorie Kinsley and her son Patrick Kinsley.

H. Roger Howe

  H. Roger Howe, age 75, of Perry passed away on Tuesday April 5, 2016 at Rochester General Hospital in Rochester surrounded by his family. Roger was born in Fillmore, New York on July 3, 1940, a son of the late Harold W. and Anna (Armour) Howe.  Along with his parents he is preceded in death by a son Craig who passed away in 1982, and a sister Patricia Leader.

Roger was a 1958 graduate of Perry High School, and studied engineering at Erie Tech in Buffalo. He worked for the Rochester Carpenter’s Union Local #85 for over 35years retiring in 1993. He was a member of Holy Apostles Episcopal Church in Perry, Constellation Lodge # 404 Free and Accepted Masons in Perry and the Silver Lake Sportsman’s Club where he started out as a Jr. member. He enjoyed collecting knives, guns, gardening, woodworking, hunting and fishing. An avid NY Yankees and New Orleans Saints fan. He especially enjoyed visits from family and friends.

He is survived by his wife; Nina (Forbes) Howe whom he married on June 22, 1963; a daughter Corinne (John) Goral of Perry; 3 grandchildren,  Natalie and Connor Goral and Brandon (Samantha) Rosa;  2 great grandchildren, Dominic and Gianna Rosa sister: Joan (Judd) Snyder of Inverness, Fl.; sisters in law Helen (Don) Follett of Mt. Morris, Carol Huffman of Mt. Morris, Elizabeth (Ray) Denby of Nunda, Ann Forbes of Mt. Morris and Sarah Forbes of Geneseo;  2 brothers in law William Leader of Orlando, Fl., and Richard (Sally) Forbes of Mt. Morris, along with many nieces and nephews.

Arthur J. Buckley IV

Arthur J. Buckley IV, 62, passed away at his home in Bennington on April 4, 2016. He was born on June 3, 1953 in Glens Falls, NY to the late Arthur J. Buckley III and Joyce (Mattison) Buckley.

Art was an “AICP” certified planner for the County of Wyoming. He loved auto racing, hunting, fishing and archery. Being outside with nature was so inspiring to him. Also, he enjoyed gardening and woodworking, which he was very good at.  Art was a very generous of spirit and was always there if someone needed him. He is a true friend. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him, especially his wife and soul mate, Deborah.

He is survived by his loving wife Deborah Buckley of Bennington; siblings Michael (Susan) Buckley, Margaret (Richard) Goldberg and Marc (Barbara) Buckley; along with several nieces, nephews and friends.

STEVEN R. NEEDHAM

Age 55, of Batavia, died suddenly Friday morning April 1, 2016 at his home in Batavia. He was born September 18, 1960 in Batavia, a son of Doris (Weatherbee) of Batavia and the late John Needham. 

Steve was retired from Angelica Healthcare where he worked for many years. He enjoyed reading, had a love for music and playing the guitar and enjoyed hanging with friends at the Harvester Hotel. 

Surviving along with his mother are his siblings, Holly Needham of Oakfield, Mitch Needham and Wade Needham both of Batavia along with nieces, Carrie (Justin) Ohlson, Christina (Michael) Knapp, Madison Needham; grand nephew, Alex Ohlson along with many aunts, uncles and cousins. 

Steve's family will be present from 1-3pm Friday April 8 at the MICHAEL S. TOMASZEWSKI FUNERAL & CREMATION CHAPEL, LLC 4120 WEST MAIN STREET ROAD BATAVIA, NEW YORK 14020 where funeral services will immediately follow, memorials in his memory are suggested to the family and burial will be in Alabama Cemetery.

Batavia - Stephen D. Urban, 39, of Batavia, died unexpectedly on Thursday (March 31, 2016).

He was born March 21, 1977 in Laredo, TX, a son of the late Faustino and Felicita (Cruz) Martinez.

Stephen enjoyed fishing.  

Survivors include one daughter, Miah Urban of Batavia; one son, Noah Garcia of Batavia; three brothers, LeRoy (fiancée Gloria) Ortega of Texas, Victor (Jo Lena) Cruz of Arizona and Carlos (Irene Peralez) Cruz of Texas; three sisters, Amy (Alan) Bledsoe of North Carolina, Heidi Urban of Batavia and Rosemary (fiancé Joe Davidge) Cook of Darien; Minnie Garcia of Batavia; his best friend, Veronica Garcia of Batavia and several nieces and nephews.

He is a brother of the late Henry Douglas Urban.
