Sherman, Walter

BERGEN- Age 80, entered into rest Tuesday.

Son of the late Walter and Beatrice (VanSlack) Sherman. 

Mr. Sherman was a carpenter with the Local 276 in Rochester prior to his retirement.  He was a member of the retiree’s club and a member of St. Vincent de Paul Chruch.  He was also an avid fisherman.

Beloved husband of Joan (Peco) Sherman of Bergen; loving father of 7; devoted grandfather of several grandchildren and many great-grandchildren; dear brother of 7. 

Preceded in death by 2 siblings.

Santo A. DeVito, Jr.

Oakfield -Santo A. DeVito, Jr., “San”, 85, of Oakfield, died Saturday (Apr 1, 2017) at home, following a 2 year struggle with the rare blood disease, mastocytosis.

He was born Feb 14, 1932, in Lyons, N.Y., a son of the late Santo A. DeVito, Sr. and Helen M. DeSain DeVito.

Upon graduation from Lyons, N.Y. High School he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force honorably serving his country from Sept., 1951 to Sept., 1955, including 13 months in Seoul, Korea for which he received the National Defense Service Medal, U.N. Service Medal, and the Korean Service Medal.  He received basic training at Sampson AFB, NY and additional training for Air Police at USAF Tech School, Camp Gordon, GA.  Upon returning from Korea, he was assigned to 62nd Air Police Squadron (TAC), Larson AFB, Washington.  His rank at separation was Airman 1st Class.

Employed for 32 years by the N.Y. State Office of People with Developmental Disabilities, he worked at the former Newark State School and Syracuse Developmental Center. He served as a residential coordinator before his retirement.   While in Syracuse, he held a number of CSEA Local 424 offices, including President.  Upon retirement, he moved to Oakfield and married Linda Hatheway (Kingsley) DeVito on Oct. 11, 1987. 

As a lifetime VFW member, San was dedicated to his fellow veterans. He served as Commander of the Oakfield VFW Ira Spring Post 273 for 21 years and was a member of both the Genesee County Honor Guard and American Legion Post 626. San was also parishioner and greeter at St. Padre Pio in Oakfield.

San loved all sports, having played football, basketball, softball, and bowling. He was an avid golfer and fisherman.  San closely followed the Yankees and Buffalo Bills, but his heart bled orange for SU football and basketball, especially Coach Jim Boeheim, a fellow Lyons, NY native.  He enjoyed sharing stories and loved to laugh.

He is survived by his wife, Linda; sister, Angela (Carl) Backus, Newark, NY; son, Christopher DeVito (Kimberly Tomaselli), Atlanta, GA; step-sons D.Mark (Maria) Kingsley, NYC,  Brian Kingsley, Cambridge, MA,  Michael (Christa) Kingsley, Chicago, IL.  Step-grandchildren Samantha Kingsley (Ryan Borden), Warwick, RI, Alex Kingsley (Sarah Apple), Charlotte, NC, Clare and Cate Kingsley, Chicago, IL. Sister-in-law, Janice Saunders, Deptford, NJ; Nephew, Matthew (Jane) Ury, Newark, NY.

Calling hours are from 4 to 8 pm Thursday, April 6th at Burdett & Sanford Funeral Home, 11 Maple Ave Oakfield. A Mass of Christian Burial concelebrated by Rev. Thaddeus N. Bocianowski and Rev. John P. Mack, will be held 10 am Friday at St. Padre Pio Parish, 56 Maple Ave, Oakfield, followed by burial in St. Cecilia Cemetery with full military honors. David L. Worthington

David L. Worthington, 54, of Batavia passed away on Saturday April 1, 2017 at the United Memorial Medical Center. He was born on March 9, 1963 in Batavia to the late Raymond Worthington and Marian Worthington of Batavia. In addition to his father, he is predeceased by his sister Susan Molek.

David graduated from Batavia High School in 1981, SUNY Fredonia with his Bachelors of Science in 1985 and SUNY Brockport with his Masters of Arts in Math in 2010. He tutored math and taught statistics at Genesee Community College for several years.

He is survived by his mother, Marian Worthington of Batavia; brother in law Michael Molek of OH; along with his niece Julia Molek and nephew Jason Molek.

Matthew B. Burns

Matthew B. Burns, 57, of Batavia passed away peacefully on Saturday April 1, 2017 taking his last breath at home where he wanted to be surrounded by his loving family after fighting a 3 years battle with pancreatic cancer. He was born on July 6, 1959 in Batavia to the late William and Lucille (Paravato) Burns.

Matt worked in construction for many years. He was an avid fisherman. He loved the outdoors and target shooting. He would often be found having a cup of coffee at the Pok-A-Dot in Batavia. Matt was an avid Sabres and Bills fan.

He is survived by his wife; Cathy Burns of Batavia; children Brandon (Kimberly) Burns of Batavia, Sarah Burns, Jason Burns, Jared Burns and Caitlin Burns all of Batavia; brother Timothy (Kimberly) Burns of Attica; sisters Julie (Maya) Martinez of TX., Colleen Burns of WA., grandchildren Bailey, Matthew, Hailey, Gracelyn and Caiden along with several nieces and nephews.

There will be no prior calling hours. Services will be held at the convenience of the family.

Stephen Philip Kelly

Stephen Philip Kelly, age 64, of Perry Center, passed away on Wednesday March 29, 2017 at Highland Hospital in Rochester. Steve was born in Warsaw, New York on May 28, 1952 a son of Grace "Joanne" Kelly of Perry Center and the late Philip Kelly.

Stephen was a graduate of Perry Central School class of 1971. He was the owner and operator of Steve Kelly’s Sales and Service and small engine repair in Perry Center and was currently working for Frontier Foods, delivering meals on wheels throughout Wyoming County. He was the manager and bartender for the former Baker’s In in Perry for over 20 years and worked briefly for Beaver River Hotel in Beaver River. A member of the Living Hope Fellowship Church in Castile, Perry VFW Post #5009 in Perry, Constellation Lodge #404 for the Free and Accepted Masons, Studebaker Club of America and was a life member of the Perry Center Fire Department. Steve enjoyed reading, working on small engines, automobiles including his Studebaker, going to air shows, traveling, especially to Beaver River each summer and was an avid history buff.

He is survived by his mother; Grace “Joanne” Kelly of Perry; sister Phyllis Baker of Castile; fiancé Louise Parker of Perry; nephew Philip Baker of Castile; 5 step children; Louise’s dogs Shorty, Gracie and Pippa along with many cousins and friends.

Elvin R. Fisher

  Elvin R. Fisher, age 61, of Warsaw, New York, entered into rest on March 31, 2017 at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, New York surrounded by his loving family. He was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis in August of 2016 and was waiting a lung transplant. Elvin was born on December 15, 1955 on Ronks, Pennsylvania to Joseph L. and the late Malinda (Stoltzfus) Fisher.

Elvin was a member of the Seeds of Truth Mennonite Church in Warsaw. He was the owner and operator of Elvin Fisher and Sons Construction Company. He enjoyed woodworking, hunting and fishing with his sons.

He was the loving husband of 34 years to Verna Mae (Riehl) Fisher, loving father of six children: Tim (Naomi) Fisher of Penn Yan, NY, Janis, Loretta, Lewis, Marcus and Keith Fisher all at home, his dearly loved grandchildren: Sophia and Oliver Fisher, also surviving is a sister: Esther (Omar) Smoker of New Providence, PA., and brother: Jessie Fisher of Ronks, PA. as well as with many nieces, nephews and friends.

Family and friends may call from 2-4 and 6-8pm on Monday April 3rd at the Valley Chapel Free Methodist Church 3415 St. Rt. 19 in Warsaw where funeral services will be held on Tuesday April 4th at 11:00am.He will be laid to rest in the Silver Lake Mennonite Church Cemetery in Perry.

JOSEPHINE C. SARACENI

JOSEPHINE C. SARACENI ~ Batavia

Age 94, went peacefully home to the Lord Thursday afternoon March 30, 2017 at United Memorial Medical Center. She was born March 25, 1923 in Batavia, NY a daughter of the late Frank and Carrie (Turenella) Anzalone; also preceded in death by her beloved husband, Fred P. Saraceni on Feb. 6, 2014; sons Alfred and siblings, Charles, Samuel & Ross Anzalone, Ida Dickinson and Mary Johnson. 

Mrs. Saraceni was longtime member of Resurrection Parish and enjoyed her 4 legged companion, Sam. She enjoyed the many trips her and her husband took in earlier years, she was a wonderful cook and baker who most enjoyed the "Christmas Parties" she held for her grandchildren with their favorite cookies and sweets. 

Surviving are her loving children, Arthur Saraceni and Karen Woods both of Batavia, Amy (James) Thompson of FL and Germaine (Robert) Osborne of NC; daughter-in-law, Jane Saraceni of Batavia; 16 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren along with many nieces & nephews. 

The Saraceni family will be present from 3 - 7 pm on Sunday April 2 at the MICHAEL S. TOMASZEWSKI FUNERAL & CREMATION CHAPEL, LLC 4120 West Main Street Road Batavia, New York 14020 where prayers will be recited 9:30 am followed by a 10:00 am Mass of Christian Burial Monday April 3 at Resurrection Parish (St. Mary's Site). BETTY ANN ALEXANDER ~ Albion

Age 70, died peacefully Tuesday March 28, 2017 at home. She was born November 9, 1946 in Bethany, NY to the late Fred and Helen (Hunter) Alexander also preceded in death by siblings, Susie, Julia, Paul and Charles. 

Betty was a sweet, loving person, anyone that knew her would know how she loved to eat and especially at her favorite place, "Sport of Kings" in Batavia, she also enjoyed writing letters to her friends. 

Surviving is her loving sister, Lucy Ross of Batavia, brothers, Hunter Alexander of Batavia and Danny Alexander of CO along with her Albion family.

DONALD E. WILCOX ~ Batavia

Age 61, died Monday evening March 27, 2017 at home. He was born April 22, 1955 in Batavia, NY, a son of the late, Harry and Lucille (Michel) Wilcox.   

Donny loved and worked for many years at Settler's Restaurant in Batavia. 

Surviving is his daughter, Patricia Hogan and her children, Oren Patrick Clough and Anthony John Ferris, II all of Batavia; his siblings, Evelyn (Donald) Vickers of Oakfield, Beverly Cavalier of LA, Leslie (Marion) Michel of Oneonta, NY along with many nieces, nephews and friends.

Vincent H. Hartrick

Basom - Vincent H. Hartrick, 88, of Basom, passed away on Thursday, March 30, 2017 at his home.

Mr. Hartrick was born June 9, 1928 in East Bethany, a son of the late Edward and Emma Hartrick.

A member of Godfrey's Pond, Mr. Hartrick enjoyed fishing and was an avid fan of the New York Yankees and Buffalo Bills. He enjoyed watching NASCAR and was a fan of Jimmie Johnson. He proudly served his country with the United States Army from 1952-1953. Mr. Hartrick worked for over 40 years at U.S. Gypsum in Oakfield, retiring as a board loading supervisor.

He is survived by his wife, Gladys Muntz Hartrick, whom he married February 10, 1951; three daughters, Barbara (late Brad) Banks of Bliss, Donna (Jim) Buczek of Elba and Deborah (Mike) Moore of Batavia; three grandchildren, Carl and Michelle Draper and Nicole (Jared) Kirkum; three great-grandchildren, Connie, Aiden and Brennan; his brother, Clarence (late Mary) Hartrick of Alexander and several nieces and nephews.

He is predeceased by his brother George Hartrick and his sister Isabelle Schoenemann.

Friends may call on Monday from 2 to 4 p.m. at the H.E. Turner & Co. Funeral Home, 403 East Main Street, Batavia. Edward Murphy

Edward Murphy, 50, of Batavia, formally of New York City passed away peacefully on Wednesday March 29, 2017 at his home surrounded by his loved ones after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born on May 24, 1966 in New York City to the late John and Lucy (Pascalli) Murphy.

Edward enjoyed the simple things in life. Elton John’s music, his favorite football teams the New York Giants, Mets baseball and Knicks basketball. He will be remembered most for his humor and contagious laugh. He will forever be our gentle giant.

He is survived by his siblings; Anna (Frank) Inman of FL., Donna Murphy of Queens, Patricia (Glenn) Hammond of Batavia, Johnny (Laura) Murphy of NYC, Joseph Murphy of PA., Cathy Murphy of NYC and Robert Murphy of NYC, along with many nieces and nephews.

Wesley A. Bathrick

  Wesley A. Bathrick, age 82, of Castile, formerly of Attica, NY, passed away on Sunday March 26, 2017 at the Wyoming County Skilled Nursing Facility in Warsaw where he had been residing. Wesley was born in Java Center, New York on June 14, 1934 a son of the late Ralph and Mildred (Neidert) Bathrick. Along with his parents he is preceded in death by a son; David J. Bathrick who passed away in 1993; sisters Evelyn Neidert and Margaret Trinidad.

Wesley served with the US Army from 1956-1958. A graduate of Warsaw High School, Wesley was a farmer in Attica from the age of 10 years old until retiring from the farming industry in the early 1980’s, he went to work for Eastside Nursing Home in Warsaw where he worked in the maintenance Department for 25 years retiring in 2013. He was a 4-H leader for over 20 years with the Wyoming County Poultry Club, he enjoyed reading, gardening, working on the family farm, enjoyed times with his family, especially entertaining his grandchildren and great grandson. His lifelong goal was doing his best to help others.

He is survived by his wife Patricia (Bernard) Bathrick whom he married on July 2, 1960; daughter Deanna (Timothy Rounds) Hawley of Castile; grandchildren Timothy (Ariel) Hawley of Gainesville, Sabrina (Dustin Rosowski) Hawley of Castile; great grandson Skyler Hawley; sister Avis (James) Freidhaber of North Carolina, along with several nieces and nephews.

At the request of Mr. Bathrick there will be no Services.

David A. Kubala

David A. Kubala, 59, of Attica passed away on Friday March 24, 2017 at his home. He was born on September 22, 1957 to the late Henry Kubala Sr. and Catherine (Carpenter) Kubala of Attica.

David will be remembered as an avid hockey and football fan. He also enjoyed a good horseshoe game, bonfires and a cold beer.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his daughters; Katelyn Kubala and Krissa Kubala both of Attica; siblings Henry (Robbin) Kubala of Alexander, Steven Kubala of Bergen, Elaine (Douglas) Olszewski of Darien Center, Julie (Derek) Evitt of South Carolina, Laurie (Ralph) Havens of West Virginia; granddaughter Emma Kubala of Attica; former wife and friend Barbara Smith of Attica along with several nieces and nephews.

Jason C. Murphy

In Loving Memory of Jason C. Murphy, age 49 of Lawrence, Kan. Jason passed away peacefully surrounded by family and friends on March 22, 2017. Jason battled esophageal cancer with inspirational determination for 8 months.

Jason was born on September 17, 1967 in Rochester, New York to the late George C. Murphy and Joy Cafaro Murphy. He was a graduate of the University of Buffalo.

Jason was a loving husband and devoted father to his daughters. He was employed by Hill’s Pet Nutrition. When not at work, Jason most enjoyed cooking. He was the quintessential host. He was popular among his daughters’ friends because he would drop everything to provide anything from warm muffins at 6 a.m. to full meals. Linguini and clam sauce was the house specialty.

Jason is survived by his wife Michelle Pask Murphy, daughters Madison Murphy and Catherine Murphy, of Lawrence, Kan. One sister, Nancy Kingsley, of Fairport, NY. Mother and father-in-law Barbara and Michael Strollo, of Florida. Brothers and sisters in law: Michael Pask, of Basom, Denise Pask, of Batavia, David (Karen) Strollo, of Virginia, Jason (Jessica) Lawrence, of Attica, Jamie (Jon) Hoca, of Batavia. Several nieces and nephews.

TONI A. (BUCK) DIXON

TONI A. (BUCK) DIXON ~ Batavia

Age 64,  died peacefully Tuesday March 28, 2017 at United Memorial Medical Center with her loving family at her side. She was born September 4, 1954 in Batavia, NY to the late Walter D. Buck and the late Mary Ann (Palone) Urtel also preceded in death by her brother, Walter M. Buck.

Toni was a hairstylist for many years and most recently for Steve's Styles in Batavia. She was an incredible cook, enjoyed baking, but most of all was a loving and devoted mother and grandmother.

She is survived by her lifetime companion, Mark Mosco of Batavia; her loving children, Lori (Ray Feldman) Keech of Stafford, Krista Quigley of NC and Mark D. Mosco of Batavia; beloved grandchildren, Leeann (Ron), Michael (Sarah), Ryan, Nicholas & Breanna; great-grandchildren, Kyleigh and Aria; siblings, Dale A. (Pat) Buck of Oakfield, Janice L. (Tim) Forster of Dayton, NY, Carol (Brian) Benedict of Rochester, Paul Urtel of Rochester and Carrie (Randy) Reiser of Darien; step-mother, Betty Buck of Batavia along with many nieces, nephews and cousins.
