Frank C. Mazzarella

  Frank C. Mazzarella, 93 of Perry, passed away peacefully on Wednesday December 5, 2018 at Suzanne’s Comfort Care Home in Perry after a long illness. He was born in Perry, New York on March 11, 1925 a son to the late Joseph and Carmella (Catalano) Mazzarella. Along with his parents he is preceded in death by his wife of 67 years: Marie (Lorenz) Mazzarella who passed away in 2015, a daughter-in-law: Maureen Mazzarella, and 11 siblings.

Frank served with the US Army during World War II. Frank ran a barber shop in Castile for many years before relocating to his own shop to Perry, where he retired from it at the age of 85. He was a member of the Perry VFW. He enjoyed reading books, watching Western Movies on TV and loved to walk daily around the Village Park.

He is survived by a daughter: Lisa M. (Mark) Walworth of Hemlock; sons Frank J. “Butch” Mazzarella of Leicester, Christopher (Linn Hom) Mazzarella of Sacramento, CA.; sister-in-law: Patricia Mazzarella; brother-in-law Paul Baron; a granddaughter Marisa Mazzarella; 3 step grandchildren James Walworth, Duane (Holly) Walworth and Lisa J. Walworth; 1 great granddaughter “little Claire”; 5 step great grandchildren Hailey (Rocco), Brandon, Aiden, Bailey and Emma and a step great-great grandchild, along with many special nieces, nephews, neighbors and friends.

Family and friends may call from 4-7pm on Monday December 10, 2018 at Eaton-Watson Funeral Home, LLC. 98 North Main Street Perry, New York 14530, where Funeral Services will follow at 7:00PM. He will be laid to rest in Leicester Cemetery in Leicester

Shirley Rose Pratt

  Shirley Rose Pratt, 90, of Batavia passed away peacefully on Wednesday December 5, 2018 at the Premier Genesee Nursing Facility in Batavia. She was born in Warsaw on November 24, 1928 to the late Floyd and Florence (Calkins) Baker. In addition to her parents, Rose is predeceased by her husband; Robert C. Pratt; brothers Carl, Gerald, Calvin and Peter Baker; sister Bernice Casselberry; and son in law Larry Strohm.

Mom enjoyed 68 years of marriage to Robert Pratt who passed away on September 1, 2015.  During retirement, they went on many trips and were rarely apart from each other.  Mom enjoyed antique shopping, decorating her home, bingo, loved to cook and was known for her baked apple pies.  She was a wonderful mother, a loving wife and is re-united with the love of her life of 68 years.

She is survived by her children; Linda Pratt of Orchard Park, Peggy Strohm of Attica, Gary (Sara) Pratt; 6 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren along with many nieces and nephews.

Family and friends are invited to call on Saturday December 8, 2018 from 12:00-1:00PM at Gilmartin Funeral Home & Cremation Company, Inc. 329-333 West Main Street Batavia, New York 14020. A 1:00PM Funeral Service will immediately follow visitation at the Funeral Home.  Rose will be laid to rest in Grandview Cemetery.

Lawrence S. "Larry" Spoto

LeRoy ~ Lawrence S. "Larry" Spoto, age 83, of Fillmore Street, passed away at home unexpectedly on Tuesday morning (December 4, 2018).

     He was born April 14, 1935 in Dunkirk, N.Y., a son of the late Alexander and Angela Acoraci Spoto.

     Larry will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather and dear friend to many.  He was a man completely devoted to his family, faith and his community.  He was a dedicated member of Our Lady of Mercy Parish, the Knights of Columbus, the American Legion and a past board member of All Babies Cherished. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and returned to his community and became a respected businessman and auto dealer for over 40 years with the former Chief Pontiac-Cadillac-Buick-GMC dealership in Lime Rock.  Larry was also a proud alumnus of St. Bonaventure University and an avid Boston Red Sox fan.

     He was predeceased by his wives, Donna Biasuzi Spoto in 1966 and Jean Kunego Spoto in 2012.  He is survived by his children, Peter Spoto of Australia, Rebecca (William Rivera) Spoto of VA, David Spoto of LeRoy, Dr. Amy (Jason Henderson) Spoto of Middletown, NY, Mark Spoto of Rochester, Sarah (Derek) Spink of LeRoy and Thomas Spoto of Rochester; grandchildren, Asher, Kaylyn, Ella, Ava, Lauren, Emma, Madison and Drew, along with many dear friends.

     Family and friends may call on Sunday, Dec. 9 from 1 ~ 5 P.M. at the Falcone Family Funeral & Cremation Service Inc., 8700 Lake Road (Rt. 19), LeRoy.  His Rite of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday at 10:00 AM at Our Lady of Mercy Parish, St. Peter's Church, 44 Lake St., LeRoy.  Interment will be private at the convenience of the family.

Jayne A. Gaebler

PAVILION - Jayne A. Gaebler, 61, of Pavilion, passed away Monday, (December 3, 2018), at United Memorial Medical Center, in Batavia.

Jayne was born August 9, 1957, in Batavia, a daughter of the late Irving and Florence (Cook) Albee.

She was a life long member of St. James Episcopal Church and enjoyed sewing, quilting, crocheting, making ceramics, and crafting.  Jayne was an avid reader, shopper, and loved dogs and cats.

 She is the wife of Robert Gaebler of Pavilion. 

Surviving along with her husband are her children, Courtney and Ryan (Melissa) Gaebler both of Batavia; brothers, Don (Susan) Albee of NC, Michael Albee of Batavia; sisters, Carole (John) Kabel of Ashville, NC, Sharon (Ronald) Barone of Stafford, Alanna (Lawrence) McLeod of Santee, CA; her mother-in-law, Rhoda (late Robert) Gaebler of Oswego.  Jayne was looking forward to welcoming her first grandchild, a girl, Jade Elizabeth Gaebler in April.                  

She is predeceased by a son, Robert James Gaebler, and a brother, Clair (late Sharon) Albee.

There will be no visitation. Jayne's Funeral Service will be held at 1:00 PM Sunday (December 9, 2018) at the St. James Episcopal Church, 405 E. Main St., Batavia. MICHAEL A. LEONE, SR. ~ Age 58, of Batavia died peacefully Friday December 1, 2018 at United Memorial Medical Center. He was born April 18, 1960, in Batavia, a son of the late Anthony F. and Barbara A. (Azzi) Leone.

Michael formerly worked at Whiting Overhead Door in Akron, NY and in his younger days enjoyed Harley Davidson Motorcycles, Muscle Cars, owning a 69 GTO. He was an outdoorsman from a young age, avid hunter, fisherman, enjoyed swimming, biking, model and RC cars. Michael’s life was his beloved Starr, children and grandchildren.       

Michael is survived by his soulmate; Star (Branche) Leone; loving children, Michael A. (Jessie) Leone, Jr. and Amanda (Arthur Filaretov) Leone all of Batavia; cherished grandsons, Weston Michael and Ryker Joel; brother, Tony Leone; mother-in-law, Betty Loss; sister-in-law, Colleen March all of Batavia; brother-in-law, Richard Branche of Pembroke; nieces, Kaytlyn and Abbigayle Leone along with several aunts, uncles and cousins.

DOLORES J. McCARTHY ~ age 85, of Batavia, NY, died peacefully Friday December 1, 2018 at Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital in Williamsville. She was born May 17, 1933, in Gowanda, NY, the daughter of the late Garnard and Marian (Philips) Hamilton, also preceded in death by a daughter, Melody Lynn Bastedo.

Dolores enjoyed cooking, crocheting, knitting, traveling and shopping.

Surviving is her husband, Philip R. McCarthy of Batavia; son, Danny (Patricia) Bastedo of Lancaster; daughter, Judy (Peter) Thompson of Alexander; step-daughter, Lydia Storey of PA along with several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

There is no prior visitation and funeral services will be announced later. Dolores will be laid to rest in Jolls Cemetery, Perrysburg, NY and memorials in her memory are suggested to a charity of the donor’s choice.

MARY LOU POTWORA

MARY LOU POTWORA ~ age 56, of Batavia, died suddenly Wednesday, November 28, 2018 at her home. Mary Lou was born in St. Louis, MO on November 1, 1962 the daughter of the late Roland and Dorothy (Glick) Stevens.

Mary Lou worked for the former Genesee County Nursing Home, enjoyed crocheting, crafts, animals, especially her dogs and time spent with her son and daughter-in-law.

Mary is survived by her beloved husband, Richard Potwora of Batavia; son, Norm (Danielle) Michael of LeRoy, NY; step-son, Dustin Potwora of FL; step-daughter, Cassandra (Jake) Ward of Alabama, NY; brothers, John Stevens and Abe (Jennifer) Stevens all of Batavia; sisters, Barb Kohl of Batavia, Rosie (John) Cobb of Las Vegas, Sue (Doug) Hackett of SC; grandson, Jaiden Michael along with several nieces and nephews.

Richard A. “Dick” Chilson

Clarendon, NY: Richard A. “Dick” Chilson, age 77, passed away on December 3, 2018 after a long illness. He was born August 19, 1941 to the late Samuel and Marjorie (Wilcox) Chilson.
 
Dick loved spending time outdoors, including making maple syrup and tending to his bee hives. He was a long time small engine mechanic and was the family handyman who did a lot of his own work on his home. He also enjoyed helping his son Dakota with his Scout projects including his Eagle project. Dick was a selfless man that always helped others before himself.
 
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his siblings, Mick, Marty, Roy, Sam, and Stella Sargent.
 
Dick is survived by his loving wife of 34 years, Cindy, children, Chris (Debbie Fiorito) Chilson, Renee (Rafael) Monroy, Denise (Kevin Miller) Wilson, Mandy (Keith) Roth, Kristi Chilson, Dakota Chilson, 13 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, siblings, Roger (Hazel Bickham) Chilson, Dora (Jim) Tice, Nora (Jerry) Walters, Larry (Rita) Chilson, Linda (Dan) McDonald, Leota (Duane) McClure, Bruce (Emily) Chilson, as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.
 
The family will receive friends at the Christopher Mitchell Funeral Homes, Inc. 16650 State Route 31, Holley, NY 14470 on Saturday, December 8th from 12:00-2:00pm where his funeral service will be held immediately following at 2:00pm. Curtis J. Ward

Byron - Curtis J. Ward,  59, of Byron, passed away Friday, (November 23, 2018) at home in Byron. 

Curtis was born July 15, 1959 in Brockport, a son of the late Sherrel and Wilma (Weaver) Ward. 

Prior to moving to Byron in 2018, he lived in Florida and Buffalo.  He enjoyed gardening.

Surviving are his children, Gena and Robert Ward, both of Florida; 2 grandchildren; nieces and nephews, Julie, Lenny, Barbie, Devon, Audra, Lilly and Shelby.

He is predeceased by his sisters, Gloria and Vicki Ward.

There will be no visitation.  Private services will be held at the convenience of the family.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Curtis' name to a charity of the donor's choice.

Eleanor P. Stevens

Eleanor P. Stevens, 94 of Perry, passed away on December 2, 2018 at the Skilled Nursing Facility at Warsaw Hospital surrounded by her family. Eleanor was born in Warsaw, NY on February 10, 1924, a daughter of the late Clifton and Rose (Merryfield) Pierce. Eleanor was predeceased by her husband Floyd E. Stevens in 1989, sister, Thelma (Carl) Copeland and brothers Clayton, James and Jack (Thelma) Pierce.

Eleanor was a graduate of Warsaw High School. She retired from Champion Products in Perry in 1986 where she was an order entry clerk and after retirement she went to work at for the former Champion Outlet Store in Perry. She then joined the Silver Lake Day Treatment Center in Perry as a Senior Companion for 20 years. She was a former member of the Women of the Moose in Perry, where she achieved the highest rank of Senior Regent. She enjoyed crocheting, traveling with her children and doing counted cross stitch.

She is survived by her son; Ronald (Carol) Stevens; daughters Linda (Ernest) Collings both of Silver Lake and Jean (Dennis) Vanelli of Perry; Sisters-in-law Julie Pierce of Wethersfield and Betty Pierce of Warsaw; 5 grandchildren Brad (Tammy) Collings, Alyssa (Tim Grasby) Morey, Ronald (Kassidy) Stevens, Jr., Jennifer (Steven) Deaton, Nicolas (Richard) Telesco; 9 great grandchildren Bradley (Jessica) Collings, Troy Collings, Hunter & Carter Morey, Cameron & Andrew Telesco, Chloe & Deacon Stevens, Tysen & Lacey Deaton; great-great-grandchildren Delanie & Bradley Collings; dear friend Cora Stedman, along with many nieces, nephews and

REVEREND WILLIAM J. POORTEN, S.J.

Fr. William P. Poorten SJ, was called to eternal life on Nov. 14, 2018 at Murray-Weigel Hall, Bronx, N.Y. He was born on June 28, 1930, in Buffalo, to the late Henry J. and Theresa (Koller) Poorten and was also preceded in death by siblings, Henry J. Poorten, Jr. and Eileen M. Poorten, step-sister, Barbara Beger and step-mother, Rita (Bernhard) Hassenfratz.

Graduating from Canisius High School in 1948, he attended Canisius College for one year before entering the Society of Jesus at St. Andrew-on-Hudson, Poughkeepsie, NY. 

He returned to Buffalo, to teach Latin and Greek at Canisius High School (1956-1959). After regency he went to Woodstock College in, Md., (1959-1963) to study theology and prepare for priestly ministry. Bishop James McNulty, the Bishop of Buffalo, ordained him to the priesthood at Canisius College on June 19, 1963.

After his tertianship in St. Bueno’s in Wales, England (1963-1964), Bill taught Latin, religion, communications and English at McQuaid High School in Rochester, N.Y., until 1978. During this time, he was also superior of the McQuaid Jesuit Community (1972–1978).

In the summer of 1979, Bill began a 31-year ministry of spiritual direction. From 1979 to 1991, he directed retreatants at Loyola House of Retreats in Morristown, N.J.  

In 1999, Bill returned to Loyola Retreat House in Morristown and continued giving spiritual direction and directing retreats until 2010. That year he returned to his native Buffalo as an associate pastor of St. Michael’s Church. Bill remained there until 2014 when, he went to Murray-Weigel Hall in the Bronx and continued to do spiritual direction for several individuals.

Bill is survived by his brother, Robert J. Poorten of Walworth, NY; sister, Mary Grace (late Robert) Demarse of Batavia, NY; step-brother, Donald (Arlene) Hassenfratz of Lancaster, NY; step-sister, Susan (Vincent, DDS) Francavilla of Buffalo, NY; a multitude of nieces and nephews in NJ, NC, CO and WNY along with many cousins in the Buffalo area.

MARY J. CLARK

MARY J. CLARK ~ age 72, of Oakfield, died peacefully Wednesday, November 28, 2018 at United Memorial Medical Center following a lengthy illness. Mary was born in Lyndonville, NY on August 31, 1946 the daughter of the late George and Emma (Goodwin) Clark also preceded in death by siblings, Coleen Rutherford and Rev. Richard Clark.

Mary worked for over 20 years at Fisher Price and most recently as an instructor for Genesee County ARC. She was an avid Buffalo Bills fan, enjoyed word search puzzles, reading paperback books and had a love for music and dancing, especially Elvis impersonator, Terry Buchwald.

Mary is survived by her best friend of 42 years, Laura Ianni of Oakfield; twin sister, Marcia Clark of Lyndonville; sister, Joyce (Mark) Ackerman of Lockport; loving caregiver, Chevelle Brimmer of Batavia; brother-in-law, Keith Rutherford of Medina along with several nieces, a nephew, cousins and her four legged companions, Brandi & Josie.

Mary’s family will be present from 11-1p.m. on Monday December 3, 2018 at the FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH 8221 Lewiston Road Batavia, New York 14020 where a Celebration of her Life will immediately follow. Joan A. McDonald

   Joan A. McDonald, 76 years of age, passed away peacefully Friday November 23, 2018 in a Hospice home located in Cheektowaga NY after a brief bout with kidney cancer. 

Joan was born September 17, 1942 in Buffalo the daughter to Eleonor Burgess and Craig T Blair. She grew up in Buffalo and later resided the majority of her life in Attica NY, and for the last five years in Alexander. 

Throughout the years, Joan or “Joannie” as known to most, was employed as a caretaker, a bus driver, a cleaning lady, a waitress, and various other odd jobs necessary to raise three children as a single mother. Later in life, she enjoyed an all too brief retirement where she had the opportunity to spend time with her grown kids and grandchildren, travel with friends, visit with relatives, and experience the little and subtle things that make life worth living; a Sunday drive, a Christmas play, squirrels on the front porch, and strolls down memory lane with a close companion. She was a truly generous woman who loved willingly and was loved by all who knew her. She was a good woman with a kind heart and she will be sorely missed by her friends and family.

Joan is survived by three children Kevin M. Riggs, Lisa M. Riggs, and Jason V. Calabrese, daughter in laws Danielle Riggs and Rebecca Calabrese, 8 grandchildren Branden, Jacob, and Macie Riggs, and Caleb, Cameron, Cara, Carissa, and Carson Calabrese.

Visitation will be held from 4:00 – 6:00PM on Wednesday, December 5, 2018 at Marley Funeral Home, LLC. 135 Main Street Attica, New York 14011. A Celebration of Joan’s life will immediately follow at 6:00PM at the Funeral Home.

Rosario A. Fiorella

Rosario A. Fiorella, 86 of Akron, NY, passed away on Monday (November 26, 2018) at Buffalo General Hospital.

He was born January 17, 1932 in Buffalo, NY, a son of the late Louis and Concetta Territo Fiorella.

Rosario was a graduate of Grover Cleveland High School and attended the University of Buffalo, where he studied biology. He was a surgical technician for Buffalo General Hospital, Roswell Park Cancer Institute and prior to his retirement was a research laboratory technician for E.C.M.C. He served his country with the U.S. Army from 1954-1956. Rosario enjoyed photography and would often be the one behind the camera taking photos. He had a passion for woodworking, bird watching and traveling. Most of all he loved having fun with his family and friends. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

Survivors include his loving wife, Patricia Fiorella (nee Russell) of Akron. Children, Angela (Michael) Monat of Buffalo, Louis (late Christine) Fiorella of Rushford, Jeanine Wiendl of Tonawanda and Joan (Michael) Czuba of Depew. Grandchildren, Tressa (Benjamin) Barbour, Michael Czuba, Jackson Czuba, Robert Czuba and James Czuba.  Also survived by nieces, nephews, many friends and his beloved Mitzi and Hazel.

He was predeceased by his brother Mario Fiorella.

Mrs. Sarah Lukaszewicz

Batavia  - Mrs. Sarah C. Lukaszewicz, age 92, of Batavia, passed away on Monday, November 26, 2018 at Brothers Of Mercy Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, in Clarence.

Mrs. Lukaszewicz was born April 15, 1926 in LeRoy, a daughter of the late Salvatore Orlando and Sarah Denare Orlando.

A 1944 graduate of LeRoy High School, she was a 1948 graduate of the St. Jerome School of Nursing through the United States Nurse Corps. Mrs. Lukaszewicz worked for 33 years at the Batavia VA Medical Center as a registered nurse. A member of Resurrection Parish, she enjoyed gardening, cooking and was an avid fan of the New York Yankees.

Her husband,  John J.  Lukaszewicz, passed away on October 7, 2011.

She is survived by her daughter, Susan Lukaszewicz of Batavia and several nieces and nephews..

Mrs. Lukaszewicz was the sister of the late Anthony, Thomas, Sam, Joseph and James Orlando, Mary Trovato and Lena Genge.

Friends may call on Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the H.E. Turner & Co. Funeral Home, 403 East Main Street, Batavia. Her Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday at 10 a.m. at Friday at St. Joseph's Church, 303 East Main Street, Batavia. Entombment will follow in St. Joseph’s Mausoleum.
