LeRoy ~ Joan T. Hammer, age 61, of Lincoln Avenue, passed away peacefully Friday morning (May 27, 2022) at home in the loving presence of her family.

 

    She was born January 7, 1961 in Batavia, a daughter of the late Ronald and Margaret Goldsmith Hammer.

     Joan will be remembered as a loving sister, aunt and dear friend, who enjoyed trips to the casino, scratching her lottery tickets and playing bingo.  She was a dedicated fan of the Buffalo Bills, the New York Yankees and Nascar.

     She will be sadly missed by her siblings, Theresa Hammer (fiancé, Dean Bates), Patricia Hammer, Kathleen (Walter) Kochmanski, Michael Hammer and Richard Hammer; brother-in-law, William Hirsch Jr., along with several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, dear friends and her special family friend and casino companion, Mary Hirsch.

     In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her sister, Bonnie Hirsch.

     Services and interment will be private.

James C. Wierda, 76 of Batavia, passed away peacefully on Friday (December 17, 2021) at United Memorial Medical Center.

He was born February 25, 1945 in Elmira, NY, a son of the late Albert and Mary Grace Groux Wierda.

Mr. Wierda was an Army Veteran, having served his country during the Vietnam War. Prior to his retirement, he was employed by Ken Barrett Chevrolet in Batavia. He enjoyed country western music, was an avid golfer and was known for his cookouts, where he would always find a reason to have one. He also enjoyed horseracing and often you could find him at Batavia Downs. Most of all, he loved his family and his world evolved around them. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

Survivors include his wife, Susan Schlenker Wierda of Batavia. Son, Derk Wierda of Batavia. Daughters, Lindsay Wierda of Batavia and Jessica (Thomas) Lewandowski of Pembroke. Eight grandchildren, Arianna, Azalea, Dimitri, Aiden, Gabreille, Ava, Tyler, Onaleigh. Daughter in-law, Oksana Wierda. Sisters, Sylvia Ripley of Buffalo and Mary Wierda of Buffalo. Brothers, Edward, John and Chris Wierda, all of Florida. Also survived by nieces and nephews.

He was the father of the late Christopher P. Wierda. Grandfather of the late Daniil Petlevanny. Brother of the late Thomas Wierda and Margaret Ryll.

The family would like to thank the caring staff at United Memorial Medical Center and Dialysis for the care which they have shown to Jim.

  Rosemarie G. Suozzi, 84, entered into eternal rest on Thursday May 26, 2022 surrounded by the love of her daughters. Rosie had been a resident at the Le Roy Village Green Nursing Facility. Rosie was born on July 8, 1937 to the late Joseph and Josephine (Sardina) Natolie in Perry, New York. In addition to her parents, Rosie is predeceased by her beloved husband; Donald and her loving sister Carol Frongetta.

Rosie was a 1955 graduate of Batavia High School and enjoyed being part of the class reunion committee for many years. Rosie was also very well known and loved waitressing for more than 40 years at the Scotland Yard which later became Bohn’s. Rosie enjoyed getting together with her Bohn’s family for many years after the restaurant closed. Rosie also loved working in food service at the NYS School for the Blind for over 20 years before retiring. She loved the children and they loved her.

A lifelong member of St. Anthony’s/Ascension Parish, Rosie was active in the Altar and Rosary Society.

Rosie married Donald Suozzi on June 4, 1960. Their 3 daughters; Donna Suozzi, Jacqueline (Thomas Balestra) Suozzi and Janice Della Penna along with their cherished granddaughters Danielle Jo and Gabrielle Rose Della Penna will try their best to carry on with the love, respect and hospitality Magoo and Rosie always demonstrated. Their home on Ellicott Street Road and later on South Jackson Street was always open to family and friends. You can always count on a fresh pot of coffee to be brewing and food being cooked and offered morning, noon and night. One could not say no to Rosie. Two of her many famous one-liners are “have coffee” and “sit, eat!”. Through the years Rosie’s life was enriched by her many groups of friends. Her Bohn’s friends, the card club and the coffee girls are a few who were and always will be near and dear to her entire family’s hearts.

Along with her daughters and granddaughters, Rosemarie is survived by her “fourth daughter” Christine Saraceni and her husband James and their daughters and families. Her brother-in-law Robert Frongetta, his sons and their families as well as countless cousins, Godchildren and family friends also survive.

Rosemarie’s daughters would like to acknowledge the kindness, caring and compassion that she received from the staff of the LeRoy Village Green, from the ladies at the front desk to the accommodating kitchen crew and amazing healthcare workers-truly angels on earth.

There will be no prior calling hours. A Celebration of Rosie’s life will be held at 10:00AM on Wednesday June 1, 2022 at Ascension Parish 19 Sumner St. Batavia, NY 14020.  Rosemarie will be laid to rest in St. Joseph’s Cemetery.

  Joanne S. Lang, 84, of Batavia passed away on Thursday May 26, 2022 at the Wyoming County Community Hospital in Warsaw. She was born on November 21, 1937 in Batavia to the late Joseph and Clara (Allen) Lang. In addition to her parents, Joanne is predeceased by her siblings; Jerome (Nancy) Lang, Dorothy (Don) Jones, Marge (Leo) Brumstead, Beatrice (Ray) Richardson, Norman Johnson, Elizabeth (Walter) Kowalik, Joseph (Pamela) Lang and James Worthington.  

She is survived by her siblings; Mary Johnson of Batavia, Harriet Worthington of Batavia, Alfred (Deanna) Lang of Batavia, Sandra (Philip) Fraterrigo of Batavia, along with many nieces and nephews.

  Carol A. Laney, 86, of Batavia passed away on Wednesday May 25, 2022 at her home. Carol was born on September 28, 1935 in Churchville, New York, a daughter of the late Fred and Mary (McAvoy) Tyler. In addition to her parents, Carol is predeceased by her grandson; Devon Van Linder; brothers William, Robert and John Tyler; sister Anne Tyler.

Carol was a member of Resurrection Parish (St. Mary’s Church) site since 1965. She enjoyed watching the Yankees, Bills and Sabres games. She did puzzles of all kinds and read many books. Carol was an avid gardener who had beautiful roses.

She is survived by his children; Linda (Larry) Van Linder of Batavia, Clifford Laney of Dansville and Carolyn “Carrie”  Laney of Batavia; granddaughter Katarina Van Linder; sister Barbara Hensel of Batavia; brother James (Patricia) Tyler of FL; along with many nieces, nephews and her best friend; Alice Vigneri.  

Friends are invited to call from 10:00 – 11:00AM on Wednesday June 1, 2022 at Resurrection Parish (St. Mary’s) 18 Ellicott St. Batavia, NY 14020. An 11:00AM Mass of Christian Burial will immediately follow at the Church. She will be laid to rest in St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Batavia.

Edna Marie (Stroh) Barrett, 99 of Attica, passed away on Friday, May 20, 2022 at Wyoming County Community Hospital, due to complications of COViD-19. She was born August 3, 1922 in Alexander to the late Edward and Dorothy (Reithenburg) Stroh. She is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Elwyn M. Barrett, siblings, Kenneth Stroh and Majorie (Harold) Hampton.

Edna grew up in the Stroh family rose business on Stroh Road in Attica and was a lifelong resident of Attica. She graduated from Alexander School in 1940.

She worked at George, King, Boss Insurance Agency for many years. Edna was a lifelong member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Attica and Lifetime member of the Attica ladies American Legion Auxiliary. She loved watching the Buffalo Bills play and enjoyed swimming with the Rusty Hinges at the YMCA’s in Batavia and Warsaw, until the age of 90. Edna loved playing Euchre and Pinochle for many years with friends.

Surviving are her three children, James (Marie) Barrett of Akron, David Barrett, Kathleen Hamill both of Attica, 8 grandchildren, Lorie Wawrzyniak, Patty (Steve) Charles, Jimmy (Serena) Barrett all of Attica, Molly (Jim) Bongiovanni, Elizabeth (Craig) Ayers of Conesus Lake, Lacey (Tim) Wahls of FL, Jennifer (Johnny) Hinton, Jeff Hamill of Georgia, 7 great-grandchildren, 4 great-great-grandchildren, along with several nieces and nephews.

Joanne  B.  Barcomb, age 83, of Batavia, passed away on Friday, May 20, 2022 at LeRoy Village Green Nursing Home.

Mrs. Barcomb was born Saturday, January 7th, 1939 in Churubusco, New York a daughter of the late Armand Decosse and Doria Tremblay Decosse.

A member of St. Padre Pio Parish, she was a charter member of the Mooers Knights of Columbus Ladies Auxiliary and a member of the Sodality of the Ladies of St. Ann since 1977. She was an assistant Den Mother with Mooers Cub Scout Pack #37 for 10 years and was a member of the Mooers Forks Home Bureau.

Joanne is survived by her loving husband, Reginald Barcomb, whom she married on September 27, 1958; her children, Michael (Karen) Barcomb, Dr. Alan (Catherine) Barcomb and Denise (Dr. Vincent) Frechette; her grandchildren, Ryan (Nicole Whitewood) Barcomb, Alexandra (Stephen Beagen) Barcomb, Marie Barcomb, James Barcomb and his companion Jessie Pierce, Elizabeth Barcomb, Daniel Barcomb, Hanaah (Justin) Bates, Nathan (Victoria) Frechette, Dr. Laena (Grant) Hines, the late Luke Frechette, Isaac Frechette and Natalia Frechette; her great-grandchildren, Amara Bates and Lilah Beagan; sisters, Helen Decoste of Plattsburgh and Shirley Barcomb of Mooers Forks along with many nieces and nephews.

She is predeceased by her brother, Gerald Decosse; sisters, Annette Trombley, Anita Trombley-McCann and Pauline Barcomb; sister-in-law, Leatrice Decosse; and brothers-in-law, Clarence Trombley, Ross Trombley, Hugh McCann, Roma DeCoste, Lionel Barcomb and Jacques Barcomb.

John J. DiSalvo, 78 of Warsaw, passed away peacefully on Monday (May 23, 2022) at Erie County Medical Center.

He was born February 28, 1944 in Batavia, NY, a son of the late Joseph and Frances Talone DiSalvo.

Mr. DiSalvo was the owner and proprietor of DiSalvo’s Pizzeria & Sub Shop in Warsaw for 50 years. He was a loving and compassionate person who was overly generous and always showed his support to his family and the whole community which he was able to be a part of for so long.

He was predeceased by his son, Daryl John DiSalvo and grandsons, Caleb Bowman and Jacob Davis. Sister, Antionette Cory and brother, Ignatius Edward DiSalvo

Survivors include his loving companion of over 50 years, Barbara Dieter of Warsaw. Daughters, Lynn DiSalvo of Rochester, Michele A. Bowman of Florida and Jamie (Lonnie) Godat of Bergen. Grandchildren, Amber Bowman, Katelyn Bowman, Kieara Parks, Samantha Dieter, Tyler Davis, Riley Davis and Destinee Davis. Eight great-grandchildren. Sister, Brenda (James) Pierce of Batavia. Batavia – Raymond A. Chudoba, age 91, passed away on Sunday, May 22, 2022 at United Memorial Medical Center in Batavia.

He was born on January 29, 1931 in Batavia, a son of the late Michael Chudoba and Josephine Oles Chudoba.

A member of St. Joseph’s Church in Batavia, he was a retired New York State Trooper with Troop A in Batavia.

He is predeceased by his wife, Patricia A Kuznicki Chudoba of Dunkirk who passed away on January 1, 2017.

Surviving are his children, Raymond M. Chudoba of Midwest City Oklahoma, Carol L. (Ronald) Roy of Del City, Oklahoma and Michael J. Szatkowski of Batavia; his companion for over 40 years, Joan Szatkowski of Batavia; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

He is predeceased by his siblings, Josephine Kukoski of Grants Pass, Oregon, Michael Chudoba of Seattle, Washington, Edward Chudoba of Batavia, Bernice Johnson of Basom.

Memories and a Tribute to my father:

Hey Dad. I remember when I was a small child how you would come home after work in your State Trooper uniform and we would share hugs.

I remember how you took over the family roofing business your father established in 1947 so you could keep your father active after he watched his son (your brother) Eddie fall to his death while painting the WBTA radio tower in 1962. You were a State Trooper at that time and also building a home for your family with your own two hands. Who does all this at the same time? You Dad. Yes, you were a man amongst men.

I remember us installing our first roof together in 1967 on Mr. and Mrs. Golkie’s home on Seward Road in Alexander when I was 12 years old, just a little distance from the home you built for us on Dodgeson Road. Pastel green T-Lok shingles. I slipped them in place and you followed me to nail them down. 

I remember going with you in 1970 to the nursing home where your father was a resident, how you would trim his nails and comfort him. I remember Grandpa tearing up when we prepared to leave.

We roofed together for many years and bowled together, too. You taught me the life lessons a boy needs to learn in order to become a man and always supported me in my decisions whether they turned out to be right or wrong.  

We have shared a lifetime of memories Dad. I have been blessed to have you as my father. I love you so much. Carol and other family send their love as well.

So now Dad, you will be laid to rest next to Mom. My honey Dawn is there too. Someday I will join you three and we will all be together again.

Batavia - William G. Wescott, Jr., 82 of Batavia, passed away on Monday, (May 23, 2022) at Premier Genesee Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation in Batavia.

Mr. Wescott was born July 15, 1939 in Batavia, a son of the late William G. Wescott Sr. and Pauline (Cooper) Wescott.

William was a parishioner of Resurrection Parish - St. Joseph's Church. He was a member of Mighty St. Joe's Drum & Bugle Corps and the Bills Mafia. He was also an avid Yankees fan.

Mr. Wescott was a teacher for 38 years at Kendall Central School where he taught 6th grade math and social studies. He was a coach for the Oakfield T-Ball, Little League, and Senior League baseball teams. William enjoyed vacationing in Daytona Beach, Florida and loved his dog, Rex. Above all though, he cherished time spent with his grandchildren, who he adored.

William is the husband of Joan (Woodstock) Wescott of Batavia; father of Kathy (Thomas) Wommack, Tim Wescott, and Sue Lewandowski all of Batavia; grandfather of Hannah Wommack, Rachel (Nick) Yackeren, Brenden Wescott, Olivia Wescott, Jonah Luplow, and Jillian Luplow; great-grandfather of Paisely Yackeren; brother-in-law of Elizabeth Wescott of Virginia.

He is preceded in death by a brother, Donald Wescott; and a sister, Mary Kay (late John) Rock.

  Debra Lynn Dobbs, of Attica, passed away peacefully on May 22, 2022 surrounded by family and loved ones. Debbie was born on October 24, 1965 in Plattsburgh, NY. The daughter of the late Donald and Julia (Robare) Dobbs.

Debra attended Attica Schools from 1970-1981, completing her high school education in Ogdensburg Free Academy in 1982. After completing school, Debbie began her life’s adventure living in Florida, where she met the man whom gave her the joy of her life, her daughter Nicole Marie. After a separation, Debbie moved back to her home state to Chatham, NY (Columbia County) where she began raising her daughter. In time she returned to her hometown where she grew up, Attica, NY. Debbie enjoyed her work as a teacher’s aide working with disabled children, until she herself became disabled. Debbie enjoyed and loved her gardening, cooking, being outside, singing and dancing, spending time and talking care of her family and friends.  The most important people to Debbie were her daughter, Nicole and granddaughter, Natalie. Debbie’s ultimate satisfaction was taking care of and being with her daughter and granddaughter with “Papa” Patrick C. Foley.

In addition to her parents, Debra is predeceased by her maternal grandparents; Sherry and Leona Dobbs; a brother Thomas Dobbs.

She is survived by her brothers; Donald Dobbs Jr., John Dobbs; sister-in-law Dawn Dobbs; Daughter Nicole M. Dobbs; granddaughter Natalie M. Dobbs; companion Patrick C. Foley, along with many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and her extended family; Erin Armstrong, Kathryn Foley, Nicole Foley and Sarah Foley; her longtime friends Jody (Jeff) Comfort, Judy Bailey and Doug Butler, Mary (Chris) Foley, Rose Montpetit and her favorite pet dog; Cooper.

There will be no prior calling hours. A Celebration of her life will be held on July 30, 2022 at the home she so loved, Patrick Foley’s residence on Eck Rd. in Attica. Please attend. She will be laid to rest in Ogdensburg at a later date.

Raymond A. Schmigel, went home to be with his Lord on May 21, 2022. He was born in Pembroke, NY on October 14, 1929 to the late Walter and Eva Leona (Sprague) Schmigel.
Ray attended Pembroke School and then followed his brothers into stock car racing while working different jobs, racing first at Civic Stadium and later at Ransomville Speedway. He worked as a mechanic for Al Zimmerman Oldsmobile before changing careers to drive a concrete truck for Clarence Redi-Mix where he retired in 1993. Ray enjoyed deer hunting. He was an usher at the Akron First Baptist Church where he was always ready to lend a helping hand. He especially enjoyed helping Duane on the farm and took great pride in his garden.

Loving father of Dale Schmigel and Mark (Connie) Schmigel; cherished grandfather of Carissa (Darren) Berghorn, Chelsea (Brad) Kunkle, Tonya (Jeff) McCormick and Stefanie Schmigel.  He is also survived by his great grandchildren Lilly and Lacey Berghorn as well as many nieces and nephews. Raymond is predeceased by his wife of 71 years, Marian E. Schmigel and his siblings, Roy, Millie, Ed, Fern, Don, Doris, Bud, and Ramona.

  Martin C. McDonald, 71, of Attica passed away on May 20, 2022 at his home. He was born on April 12, 1951 in Buffalo to the late Martin G. McDonald and the late Dorothy (Faslon) Stiles. He is preceded in death by a sister; Ginny McDonald; daughter in law Rebecca McDonald and father in law; Albert Stewart.

Martin was a proud United States Marine veteran who devoted his life to working. At a young age he started collision work and eventually opened up his own shop in the buffalo area where he grew up. Marty moved to Darien in his 20s where he spent many years as an EMT at the Darien fire department, he held many positions and eventually became chief. He then went on to be a correctional officer and after dedicating 27 years he retired from Attica State Correctional facility. When Marty was in his late 40s, he moved to Attica where he resided the rest of his life. He liked to do his own handy-man work and in the early 2000s he and his wife remodeled the home and built a 2-car garage. Marty spent his free time with friends and family. He enjoyed going out to eat, vacations, going for a drive to jam out with his daughter Taylor, doing work around the house and being outside, going to different casinos with his wife Barb, but Marty most loved spending time with his “pride and joy” Taylor. Martin was a kind soul with a heart bigger than the world.

He is survived by his wife; Barbara (Stewart) McDonald; beloved children Taylor McDonald, Robin McDonald, Michele (Robert) Wesley, Mike (Jen) McDonald, Marty McDonald, Scott McDonald; sister Mary Louise (McDonald) Miller along with many nieces, nephews, grandchildren and cousins.

LeRoy ~ James F. Christner, age 79, passed on March 21, 2022.

     He was born on April 5, 1942 to the late Paul Christner and Kathryn Gentner Christner. He is survived by his son, Peter; and brothers, Edward and Thomas.

     He was a graduate of Pavilion Central School and Cornell University. Jim was an officer in the U.S. Navy and active in Veterans for Peace. He travelled the world and enjoyed singing with the Cornell Alumni Glee Club.

     His graveside memorial service will be held on June 4th at 11:00 AM at St. Francis Cemetery, Exchange St., LeRoy, with a reception to follow at noon at the Knights of Columbus Hall, West Main St., LeRoy.

Darien Center - Carl  E. Doell, 85, of Darien Center passed away on Tuesday (May 17, 2022) at Buffalo General Hospital in Buffalo, New York.

Mr. Doell was born May 16, 1937 in Ilion, NY, a son of the late Gordon and Hazel (Rouse) Doell.
 
Carl was a classic car enthusiast (especially treasuring his '57 Thunderbird), and a faithful attendee of car shows. Carl had a brilliant sense of humor. He was a hardworking family man, a loving husband, devoted father, beloved grandfather and cherished uncle.

He is the husband of Diane (Helwig) Doell of Darien Center. The two were married on August 22, 1964 in Attica and spent nearly 58 years together.

Surviving along with his wife are his son, Carl E. (Barbara Landers) Doell, II of Attica; a grandson, Nick Doell; brothers, Larry Doell of Ontario, and Richard Doell of Batavia. Carl is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Family and friends may call on Saturday (June 25, 2022) from 10-11 a.m. at the H.E. Turner & Co. Funeral Home, 403 East Main Street in Batavia. Carl's memorial service will immediately follow visitation at 11 a.m.
