Genesee loses regional finals series to Hudson Valley

The Genesee Community College softball team lost the third and final game of the Region III Division III Group B Finals series to Hudson Valley Community College on Saturday afternoon by a final score of 16-5.

The Cougars forced a game three after a comeback win on Friday night but fell behind after the Vikings scored two in the top of the first on Saturday.

Genesee responded in the home-half of the inning after Karissa Schuster led off with a single and came around to score on a Shannon Baker hit. The Cougars added two more runs in the inning and took a 3-2 lead into the second.

Baker retired HVCC in order in the second but surrendered five runs on two hits and two walks in the third, which put the Vikings in the lead for good.

Hudson Valley added two more in the fourth before GCC scored twice in the bottom of the inning to cut the lead to 9-5, but the Cougars send just two batters over the minimun to the plate the rest of the way and did not cross the plate again.

Schuster finished the game 3-4 with two runs scored. Dani Wilshire and Chelsey Ruzewski each collected two hits and Georgie Miller went 1-4 with a run scored and a run batted in.

Shuster and Baker were both named to the Region III Group B All-Tournament team for Genesee, which finishes the season 25-11

Championship of Rotary Tournament moved up to 4:30 p.m.

Norte Dame and Batavia advance to the championship match of the Rotary Tournament at Dwyer Stadium. Because of the threat of rain, the game starts at 4:30 p.m., two hours sooner than originally planned. The consolation game between Attica and Oakfield Alabama is being played at Batavia High School.

Kentucky Derby sets new records at Batavia Downs

Representatives from Western Regional Off-Track Betting Corporation (WROTB) announced that total wagering at WROTB on Saturday’s Kentucky Derby topped out at $1,930,585.30 with payouts of 2,067,622.80. Wagering handle was the second highest in WROTB’s history, and its payout to winning bettors was $800,000 more than last year and higher than it took in wagers, a first. 

“It’s the first time we’ve ever seen more payouts than money taken in," said WROTB Handicapper and Live Racing GM Todd Haight.

The complimentary Derby programs given out at WROTB Branches, EZ Bets and at Batavia Downs on Saturday touted Haight’s Hot Picks on the cover, which correctly selected the top four Derby finishers in exact order. The bettors of Western New York certainly benefitted as WROTB paid out $600,000 in winning Trifecta bets and over $630,000 in winning Superfecta wagers, both records.

Wagers placed at Batavia Downs Gaming totaled $62,248.50, an increase of nearly 5 percent over last year. Wagering using BataviaBets.com, WROTB’s online Web site, on the Derby was $53,821, a 26.6-percent increase over last year. Nationally the handle on the Kentucky Derby was up 4 percent and was its highest ever at $197 Million.

“It’s so exciting to see that interest in the Kentucky Derby is alive and well in Western New York," said Ryan Hasenauer, director of Marketing of Batavia Downs and WROTB. “We’re all pulling for a Triple Crown contender in American Pharoah. Ninth annual David R. Millis Memorial Golf Tournament set for June 7

The ninth annual David R. Millis Memorial Golf Tournament will be hosted on Sunday, June 7th, at the Batavia Country Club. Registration begins at 11:30 a.m. with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. This tournament is in memory of David Millis who passed away with pancreatic cancer at the early age of 54. Dave was the Superintendent for the Pollution Control Facility in the Village of Albion for 32 years and was an active member of the community.

Teams ready for Rotary Tournament this Saturday

The 17th Annual Rotary Baseball Tournament is this Saturday at Dwyer Stadium.

Notre Dame meets Attica at 11 a.m., Batavia and Oakfield-Alabama square off at 1:30 p.m. The consolation game is at 4 p.m. and the championship game is scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m.

Coaches and select members of the participating teams attended a luncheon today at the YMCA hosted by the Rotary Club of Batavia.

Genesee reaches final four after win over Suffolk

The No. 4 nationally-ranked GCC men's lacrosse team is headed to the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Final Four after an 11-9 win over visiting Suffolk County Community College in the opening round of the tournament on Saturday.

Suffolk took the early lead in the first ever national tournament game hosted by GCC. The Sharks scored at the 8:05 mark to take a 1-0 advantage.

Genesee got the equalizer from Brody Jorgenson with 3:50 left in the first quarter and Cyrus Spruce followed 40-seconds later to give GCC a 2-1 lead.

With the game tied at two early in the second, Drew Horton scored to make it 3-2 Genesee, but Suffolk answered quickly to tie it up at three.

Alex Henry went 50 yards on his own to score unassisted at the 5:42 mark of the second and John Jimmerson extended the Cougars' lead to 5-3 with a goal 41-seconds later. GCC took the two-goal lead into the half.

Suffolk cut the lead to one with a man-up goal early in the second half before GCC scored three straight to take an 8-4 lead. Jimmy Smith scored twice and Colton Reformat added one. The Sharks added another man-up goal late in the third to cut the lead to 8-5 at the end of three.

Suffolk scored back-to-back to start the fourth and GCC's lead was down to one at 8-7. Spruce ended the SCCC scoring stretch with his second goal of the game at the 11:55 mark and Jorgenson followed with his second goal of the game just nine seconds after to make it 10-7 Genesee.

After Suffolk again cut the GCC lead down to one with back-to-back goals, Nick Lavoy added an insurance goal with 49-seconds remaining, and the Cougars held on for the two-goal victory.

Mike Caternolo was eight for 10 on face-offs and also had six ground balls.

Jorgenson was four of six on face-offs and collected four ground balls and Henry led the Cougars with three takeaways.

Corey Luty made 10 saves in net to earn the victory, which was the first national tournament win for GCC in school history.

Genesee (12-4) will advance to its fourth NJCAA Final Four in school history and take on No. 1 Onondaga CC (15-0) on Sat., May 9 in Baltimore, MD at 1 p.m.

The late Ed Anderson was remembered Friday by former colleagues and players as a man dedicated to the education of children and a keen interest in guiding young female athletes in the pursuit of excellence and confidence.

One speaker noted that Anderson did for generations of female student athletes what Coach Dan VanDetta did in boys sports.

Speakers include:

  • Dr. Roy Dexheimer, superintendent from 1968 to 1981;
  • Dr. David Van Scoy, superintendent from 1981 to 1998;
  • Nancy Viola, athletic director 1981-1998;
  • John Jakubowski, principal of Batavia Middle School, 1990-2003;
  • James Tetter, parent and BHS graduate, Class of 1966;
  • Ally Shirtz Howe and Sue Medley, BHS graduates who pushed through the idea of naming the field after Anderson;
  • Michael Bromley, current athletic director.

Anderson's grandchildren threw out the ceremonial first pitch.

Notre Dame track star signs with Division I Mercyhurst

Notre Dame's Anna Warner, a multiple Section V title holder in cross-country, signed a letter of intent to attend Mercyhurst University, an NCAA Division I school in Erie, Pa.

United Way of Genesee County forms six local 5K race series spanning May through September

The United Way of Genesee County is pleased to announce the formation of the Genesee County Race Series. The event is a collaboration between the United Way and six local 5K events and will culminate with the annual Runner of the Year Award.

Runners will be required to participate in at least three events to be eligible for awards. The top four race results will be counted toward an individual's ranking. Cash awards ($300 for first, $150 for second and $50 for third) will be presented to the top three male and female runners. In addition, awards will be presented to the top three runners in each age group (overall winners will not be eligible for age group prizes). There will also be awards given to individuals who participate in all six races. Awards will be presented at a year-end banquet in October.

According to United Way of Genesee County Director Erik Fix, “The United Way believes in building a better community through education, income and health. The Race Series is just one way we can help build a healthy community. We are excited to partner with six great local races to create the series. Our goal is to quickly grow to 10 races by 2017.”

The vision for the series is to draw more people to each event and getting more people out to participate.

“We hope the additional prizes including a cash prize will help to draw some quality racers and their families and friends to Genesee County,” Fix said.

The series will begin with the UMMC Spring Sprint 5K on May 9 and culminate with the ARC Friends and Family 5K on Sept. 26.

The six races are:

  • May 9 -- UMMC Spring Sprint 5K
  • May 29 -- Genesee Cancer Assistance Festival of Hope 5K
  • July 4 -- Kiwanis Independence Day 5K
  • Aug. 15 -- Don Carroll Toys for Kids 5K
  • Sept. 7 -- Jaycees Labor Day 5K
  • Sept. 26 -- ARC Friends and Family 5K

The series is being sponsored by Alpina Foods. The yogurt company will be present with sample products at each event. The series is open to individuals of all ages regardless of where they reside. Batavia HS to dedicate renovated softball field to Coach Anderson

The upgraded softball field at Batavia High School will be dedicated Friday to honor Ed Anderson, a former coach and teacher with the school district.

Anderson taught sixth grade from 1965 until his retirement in 1998. He was the first varsity girls softball and girls soccer coach for the Blue Devils.

"He was known as an excellent teacher and is most famous for his annual weeklong sixth-grade camping trips to Allegheny State Park that he led for 30 years, said Sue Medley, who has been helping organize the dedication ceremony, which starts at 3:30 p.m., Friday, rain or shine.

Anderson coached junior high bowling from 1977 to 1987, softball from 1979 to 1998, soccer from 1978 to 1998 and girls basketball from 1988 to 1991.

The girls won their first sectional title in softball in 1982.

"Coach Ed Anderson left his mark on generations of Batavia Middle and High School students while serving the Batavia City School system for more than 30 years. He was a role model to all," said Athletic Director Mike Bromley. "He was a source of support and an example of calmness, determination and generosity for the athletes he coached. He fought tirelessly for equality and opportunity in girls’ sports."

While school officials had recognized the need to upgrade the softball facilities, it was only after a group of players and their parents filed a Title IX lawsuit demanding facilities more on par with what the boys baseball team enjoys by playing its games at Dwyer Stadium that a settlement was reached. That led to new bleachers, dugouts, infield, outfield fence, scoreboard and batting cage.

The team is scheduled to play Greece Arcadia at 4:30 p.m. Following the game there will be a celebration reception in the high school's atrium at 6:30 p.m.

The dedication committee is still seeking financial support. The committee has currently raised $3,400 with a goal of $10,000. Funds will be used for field signage, a permanent memorial, dedication ceremony and contribution to the Ed Anderson Outdoor Education Campership Fund on behalf of the community. Genesee falls to Onondaga in men's lacrosse Region 3 finals

The No. 4 nationally-ranked Cougars could not stop No. 1 Onondaga Community College from winning its 11th consecutive Region III Championship, falling to the Lazers 24-4 on Sunday afternoon at OCC.

Genesee kept pace early on and after OCC took a 1-0 lead 3:35 into the first quarter, the Cougars answered when Cyrus Spruce found the back of the net on the man-up at the 7:30 mark  for his 41st goal of the season.

Onondaga went on to score four straight goals to end the first period and held a 9-1 lead before GCC scored again. John Jimerson made it 9-2 with a goal with just under five minutes to play in the half and after OCC scored on the man-up, Jimmy Smith returned the favor with a man-up goal for Genesee with 3:16 to play in the second quarter to make it 10-3. The Lazers went on a 3-0 run to end the half and led 13-3 at the break.

Kyle Fabian gave GCC the first goal of the second half, scoring unassisted less than a minute in. That would be the last time Genesee would find the back of the net, however, as OCC scored the final 11 goals of the game en-route to its 103rd consecutive victory.

Jimerson led Genesee with four ground balls and also had one takeaway. Alex Henry recorded three ground balls and three takeaways and Oliver Stoudt had two ground balls and one caused turnover.

Colton Reformat went 7-14 on face-offs, Mike Caternolo was 4-13 and Ray Tague was 1-4.

Corey Luty and Brian Thielman combined to make 13 saves in net.  

Smith and Spruce were both named to the all-tournament team for GCC.                           

Genesee (11-4), which qualified for the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) National Tournament with a win on Saturday against Dean College in the regional semifinals, will await its seed and pairing for the tournament, which will begin on May 2.

Genesee drops two to Herkimer

The Genesee Community College softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader to Herkimer College on Saturday afternoon, falling in game one 8-2 and 11-0 in game two (F/5).

The Generals scored a run in the first to take an early lead, but the Cougars tied it in the bottom of the inning after Karisa Schuster led off with a single and scored on an RBI single from Andrea Torres. Bailee Welker sacrificed the run into scoring position.

Dani Wilshire gave GCC the lead in the bottom of the second with a solo home run to make it 2-1.

Genesee combined for just three hits the rest of the way, however, and Herkimer scored twice in the fourth, three times in the fifth and added two in the sixth to win game one.

Shannon Baker gave up eight runs on 15 hits struck out three in the complete-game effort.

Georgie Miller went 2-3 at the plate, Schuster was 1-3 with a run scored and Torres went 1-3 with an RBI.

After GCC went down in order in the first inning of game two, the Generals sent nine players to the plate and scored five times in the bottom of the first to take the early lead.

Herkimer added six runs in the second and shut the Genesee offense down to win game two in five innings.

The Cougars managed just two hits in game two, a double by Wilshire and a single by Torres.

Genesee (14-9) will travel to Cayuga Community College on Sunday to resume a suspended game from Apr. 13, and play a doubleheader against the Spartans beginning at 1 p.m.

Genesee women's lacrosse falls to Onondaga in season finale

The Genesee Community College women's lacrosse team dropped its season finale to Onondaga Community College on Saturday afternoon, 24-5.

The Lazers tallied the first 10 goals of the game before Kaleigh Murray scored her first of two on the afternoon at the 14:36 mark of the first half.

Mackenzie Wood also scored twice on the afternoon, netting one late in the first half and one at the 4:40 mark of the second. Kaci Asper added a goal as well, scoring with 14:25 to play in the second.

Taylor Miller led GCC with seven ground balls, Wood won 10 draw controls and collected six ground balls and Maddie McDonagh caused two turnovers.

Katya Oakes played all 60-minutes in net and made 14 saves.

Genesee finishes the season 2-6.

Batavia's Jeff Redband named First Team All State by sportswriters

Blue Devil Jeff Redband has been named to the All-State First Team by the New York State Sportswriters Association.

With 27 points per game, Redband had the second highest PPG average of all the Class A ranked players.

Redband recently signed a letter of intent to attend Daemen College in Buffalo on a basketball scholarship.

Notre Dame's Josh Johnson was named to the fourth team in Class D.

No. 4 Cougars advance to regional semis after win over Monroe

The No. 4 nationally-ranked GCC men's lacrosse team is headed to the Region III Semifinals after a 22-2 win over Monroe Community College on Wednesday in the quarterfinals.

The Cougars, the No. 2 seed in the regional tournament, saw 14 different players record a point in the game.

Genesee led start to finish in a game that was never in doubt. The Cougars held a 10-1 lead at halftime and scored six goals in the first five minutes of the second half to keep the game out of reach.

Jacob Bomberry led the offense with five goals and two assists for seven points in the game. Cyrus Spruce scored four goals and added an assist, Mitchell Kinney had three goals and an assist, Jimmy Smith added a goal and three assists, Joshua Wester finished with two goals and an assist and Evan Jacob and Brody Jorgenson both scored two goals apiece.

Alex Henry led the defense with four takeaways and he also assisted on a goal. Reed Hnidy collected a team-high seven ground balls and had two takeaways and an assist.

Ray Tague went 8 for 9 on face-offs, Colton Reformat finished 7 for 9 and Mike Caternolo was 6 for 7.

Corey Luty made eight saves in net for Genesee, which advances to the semifinals and will face Dean College on Saturday at Onondaga CC. Face-off is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. and the winner will receive an automatic bid into the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) National Tournament. 

Batavia's Jeff Redband makes first team in regional hoops honors

Batavia's Jeff Redband (file photo from the 2014-15 basketball season) tops the field of Genesee County student-athletes to receive All Genesee Region honors for winter sports, as published today by the Democrat and Chronicle.

Redband was Monroe County Division IV Player of the Year, a Section V Class A2 All-Tournament Team player. He averaged 27 points, nine rebounds and two blocked shots per game this season and led Batavia (18-3) to division title. He surpassed 1,000 varsity points, including a  51-point game (a school record) vs. Irondequoit. He made 40 percent of 3-pointers and 88 percent of free throws. Academically, he carries 94 average.

Later today, Redband will sign a letter of intent to attend Daemen College on a basketball scholarship.

Notre Dame beats Lyndonville 4-3

Notre Dame came from behind to beat Lyndonville 4-3 at Dwyer Stadium on Thursday.

Prospero's line was 6 innings, 2 hits, 0 runs, 6K and no walks. Lyndonville's had a 3-run first on a Brandon Schoolcraft RBI double and Eric Nease's 2-run triple. The Irish responded with two first inning runs on Mike Falitico's RBI groundout and Michael Muehlig's 2-out RBI single. They tied it in the fifth when Cal Tygart tripled to deep center and scored on another Mike Falitico RBI groundout. The winning run was scored by Larry Infantino, who walked, moved to second on CJ Suozzi's single and scored on Peter Madafferi's RBI double.
