Community Prayer Walk at Northgate Free Methodist Church in Batavia -- starts at North Campus

Each Wednesday evening, a team from Northgate Free Methodist Church meet at 8160 Bank Street Road (North Campus) and walk a trail around the perimeter of the church property, praying for the community, the church and congregational needs as they walk.

The “Community Prayer Walk,” was scheduled to be open to the public this fall and is being developed by the members of the church and the youth of Northgate. It is a beautiful trail to walk, reflect, and meditate on and will soon include multiple prayer stations located along the path.

Reel Discussion at Richmond library, Summer Reading Edition movie: 'Murder on the Orient Express'

Richmond Memorial Library will host Reel Discussions – Summer Reading Edition at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 23rd.

Come view the movie and join us for a group discussion afterward. This month’s movie is the “Murder on the Orient Express.”

'History of Native American Land Rights in WNY' is speaker's topic at Stafford Historical Society meeting

The Stafford Historical Society, on Wednesday, Aug. 22, will present Cindy Amrhein, Wyoming County historian, whose program will be about "The History of Native American Land Rights in Western New York."
 
The program will begin at 7 p.m. in the Stafford Town Hall at 8903 Route 237, Stafford.
 
Amrhein will be taking a close and critical view of the complex and even dubious transactions with the Six Nation that satisfied the quest for the land of Western New York.

Learn to make beautiful flower arrangements at Richmond library with master gardener, free, no registration required

Richmond Memorial Library will host a flower-arranging demonstration at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 13.

Join CCE Master Gardener Jan Goodenbery for a demonstration on using flowers from your garden to make beautiful arrangements. Learn the basics of flower arranging so you can do it yourself.

Reception for summer art show on 'Batavia/Genesee County Connections' at GO ART! Refreshments served, all welcome, free!

The Batavia Society of Artists is having a summer art show at GO ART!, upstairs in the Rotary Gallery. The theme is Batavia/Genesee County Connections.

The free opening reception is 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 14. Refreshments will be served and all are welcome!

The show runs till Oct. 5th.

GO ART! is located in historic Seymour Place, 201 E. Main St., in Downtown Batavia.

Must preregister: GC Park & Forest -- new moon meteor shower and stargazing outdoor event

Enjoy the view of a dark sky on a new moon night at the Genesee County Park & Forest! Join us for “New Moon Meteor Shower and Stargazing” from 9:30 to 11 p.m. this Friday, Aug. 10th.

Meet at the Interpretive Center and catch a front row seat for nature’s annual meteor shower! Learn about this astronomical phenomenon and hear the stories behind summer’s constellations.

This program will be held outdoors. Bring a blanket or a chair for your spot in the meadow, far away from city lights.

Arc's Friends & Family 5K & Fun Walk in Elba, funds Mary Anne Graney Memorial Scholarship Fund

Arc of Genesee Orleans will hold its 14th annual Friends & Family 5K & Fun Walk on Saturday, Sept. 15 in Elba.

There will be food, fun and music, plus kids' activities, including face painting.

Cost is $20 for the 5K and $15 for the one-and-a-half-mile Fun Walk; but both rates will increase by $5 on race day for those not preregistered. For nonparticipants wishing to attend the post-event party, cost is $5.

There is a small processing fee for online race/walk registrations.

Cornell Cooperative Extension of Genesee County Board of Directors meeting

Batavia - The Cornell Cooperative Extension of Genesee County Board of Directors will meet at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 28.  The meeting will be held at the Extension Center at 420 E. Main St. in Batavia and is open to the public.

The next 2018 CCE Board of Director meeting will be at the same time/place on Nov. 20.

Independent Living in Batavia hosts public meeting to gather input on how best to use federal funds for full access

Batavia’s premier consumer-run human service and advocacy agency for people with disabilities, Independent Living of the Genesee Region (ILGR), in cooperation with the New York State Independent Living Council (NYSILC), is hosting a public meeting Tuesday, Aug. 14, to gather consumers' input on how to direct the use of Federal Independent Living funding to provide full access for people with disabilities in their community.

The Elba community lost an iconic landmark when the Stumblin’ Inn was destroyed by fire on July 8. This building sat at the corner of South Main and Mechanic streets since 1875, known by several names, lastly as the Stumblin' Inn, owned and operated by brothers Steve (Stork) and Jim Goff for the last 39 years.

MOVED TO GCC: Musical tribute to honor late Batavia school band instructor Neil Hartwick, held at free Batavia Concert Band show

UPDATED Aug. 1 at 4:43 p.m.: A musical tribute and celebration of the life of the late Batavia band director and music instructor Neil Hartwick is set for 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 1, at Centennial Park Genesee Community College's Stuart Steiner Theatre. It is free.
 
He is credited with influencing the lives of many students.

Safe Summer Children's Carnival at Falleti Ice Arena on Evans Street in the city

The Genesee County and Batavia Youth Bureaus are planning the annual Safe Summer Children’s Carnival open to the public to take place on Thursday, July 26, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at Falleti Ice Arena, 22 Evans St. in Batavia.

Tri-County NFL Flag Football League registration -- at Batavia City Centre

Tri-county NFL Flag Football League inaugural Fall 2018 registration will be held:

  • Batavia City Centre -- Thursday, July 26, 4 to 7:30 p.m.;
  • T.F. Brown's restaurant -- Saturday, July 28, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m..

The co-ed league is open to boys and girls age 5 to 13 from throughout the area, with divisions for ages 5, 6 and 7, 8 and 9, 10 and 11, and 12 and 14.
