Snowshoe workshops at Genesee County Park & Forest, reservations required

Take a guided walk through the Genesee County Park & Forest and learn to snowshoe during a hike Saturday, Jan. 12. Cost is $8 per session and preregistration and payment are required. Snowshoes will be provided. Two guided hiking sessions with instructions are available: from 10 a.m. to noon, or from 1 to 3 p.m. Refreshments will be served afterwards. Call 344-1122 to register. The park is located at 11095 Bethany Center Road, East Bethany.

Live manger scene in Yunker's barn, old-time Christmas Eve service in Elba

The Christmas Star is lighted. The old barn is waiting. A Christmas Eve service will be presented by the Elba Presbyterian Church.

Lighted candles in jugs along the road will lead the people to the Yunker barn. Covered onion crates allow nearly 100 people to sit and watch a live manger scene, sing familiar carols and listen to Scripture and special music.

The pastor, Rev. Barbara Tipton, will lead the prayers and give a short meditation. The service will begin at 7 p.m. on Dec. 24 at 6460 Transit Road, Elba. The public is cordially invited.

Children's Christmas Gala at the Holland Land Office Museum

Games, Movies, Singing, decorating Christmas Cookies, pizza and even a visit from Santa.    We will have a direct mail box to the North Pole at the Museum - so bring your letters with you.  For youngsters under 10 years old - cost $5.00 per child or $10 per family.  Call the museum for pre-registration at 343-4727. 

Also, stop in to see the Festival of Trees at the Museum - display will be open until January 2nd.   Always a nice way to create family memories. Our gift shop is open with great ideas for holiday giving.

Le Roy residents invited to comment on Wiss Hotel proposal at village board meeting

Press release:

A new offer to purchase the Wiss Hotel from the Village of Le Roy has been submitted to the village by Le Roy New York, LLC. The new offer eliminates the prior provision that the village loan the group money to purchase the property. The village board will provide the opportunity to residents to appear at the beginning of its meeting at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 12, in the Le Roy Village Hall to comment on the proposal.

Deadline is Dec. 17 to order pies to benefit K-Kids at St. Joseph's

The K-Kids from St. Joseph's School are having a fundraiser by taking orders for Bob Evans pies. They are $10 and will be ready in time for Christmas.

The pies will be unmarked so you can serve them and take credit for making them!

Order forms are available at the school or you can order from Anita Strollo via e-mail at <mommyneetz@yahoo.com>

Orders need to be placed by Dec. 17 and pick up for pies will be at Bob Evans restaurant on Dec. 21. All Checks should be payable to Bob Evans.

Pokemon Party at Richmond library

Two new programs are coming to the Richmond Memorial Library during winter break.

Are you a Pokémanic? Come join us at the Richmond library at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 28 for a Pokémon Party! There will be crafts, stories and games. Children can dress up as their favorite Pokémon. Registration is required.

Children ages 6 years old and up. The library is located at 19 Ross St. in Batavia.

Free lecture at GCC on William Seward

A free lecture on William Seward will be given by Walter Stahr at Genesee Community College beginning at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 5. It will take place in the Conable Technology Building, T102.

History and culture enthusiasts of all ages would appreciate this lecture.

As part of GCC's Civil War Initiative, Stahr will share excerpts from his new published biography entitled, "Seward: Lincoln's Indispensable Man."

Social with cookies at Elba Historical Society

The Historical Society of Elba will meet at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 6, at the museum on Maple Avenue Extension. It will be a social gathering, no meeting, although newly elected officers will be sworn in. Everyone is welcome to attend.  Refreshments will be served. Members should bring a dozen cookies each.

Newly elected officers are: Earl Roth, president; Louis Esten, vice-president; Amy Vlack, treasurer; and June Rowcliffe, secretary. Each serve a two-year term beginning Jan. 1. Linda Horner was elected to the board for a 3 year term.

Benefit for coach James "Beef" Soggs

It's "all about the Beef" Saturday, Dec. 1, at Batavia Downs where there will be a benefit for popular and beloved youth sports coach James "Beef" Soggs.

He is ill and needs assistance with his medical bills.

Admission to the event, to be held in the Paddock Room, is $20 and you get $10 in free casino play upon entry.

Time is 7 to 11 p.m. and music will be provided by Unruly and venue DJs.

Christmas card class for adults at Richmond library

A Christmas card class for adults is offered at Richmond Memorial Library, 19 Ross St., Batavia, on Monday, Dec. 3.

It will take place from 6 to 8 p.m.

Learn to make eight cards and an ornament in this class taught by Jenn Cascell. Registration is required and $6 for supplies is due at the time of registration.

Knitters' class on Celtic cable stitch at Richmond library

Celtic Cable Scarf Class at Richmond Memorial Library

Learn an easy technique to master knitting the Celtic cable stitch. This class for intermediate knitters is taught by Linda Daviau. It takes place from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 27, and registration is required.
