Art demo on watercolor with watercolor crayons at GO-ART!

June 1 is registration deadline for demo on cooking with solar ovens

Cooking with Solar Ovens - "How Lo-Tech Can Be High Impact" 

Join Janis Colby for an interesting and educational hands-on demonstration for adults on solar ovens. You will learn how, where, and why they are used today. Participants will make a solar oven to take home. Registration deadline is June 1.

Cost is $10. Call 344-1122 to register. Limit of 25 participants.

The actual demo is from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturday, June 9.

Community Action of Orleans & Genesee food distribution at fairgrounds

Community Action of Orleans & Genesee announced that the next surplus food distribution event begins at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 6, at the Kennedy Building at the county fairgrounds. It is located at 5056 E. Main St. Road in the Town of Batavia.

Distribution will take place until the food runs out but no later than 3 p.m. You may pick up food for someone else with a signed permission slip. For questions, please call 343-7798, ext. 116.

Everyone is required to bring:

Proof of residency in the form of a water, gas, electric or telephone bill;

Local artwork on display today at Pembroke High School -- tole painting, Corfu Colorama Art Society pieces

Beginning at 3 this afternoon, the Pembroke Historical Association will display pieces of art from local artists at Pembroke High School in the cafeteria during the school district budget vote.

Featured in the display is a history of the Corfu Colorama Art Society, which was prevalent in the 1950s through the 1960s. More than 40 pieces of art from members of the society will be on display along with items depicting the popular style of tole painting.

The high school is located at 8750 Alleghany Road in Corfu.

Batavia City School District budget vote and board of education election

Batavia City School District will hold its board of education election and budget vote for the 2012-13 academic year on Tuesday, May 15.

The polls will open at 7 a.m. and close at 9 p.m. at John Kennedy School, located at 166 Vine St., for properties north of Route 5. Same hours apply for voting at Batavia High School, 260 State St., for properties south of Route 5.

Jackson School principal speaks on bullying at free 'Peace for Pasta' dinner

Jackson Elementary School Principal Shawn Clark will be the featured speaker at the next free spaghetti dinner, “Pasta for Peace,” at 6:30 p.m., on Thursday, May 17, at the First Presbyterian Church, 300 E. Main St., in Batavia.

The subject will be “No Room for Bullying.” He is slated to become principal at Batavia High School in September.

Friends of the Richmond library Members Only Preview Sale for books

The Friends of the Richmond Memorial Library will hold a Members Only Preview Sale for books from 5-7 p.m. on Wednesday, June 6, in the Wilber Room of the library at 19 Ross St., Batavia.

Friends must show their membership card at the door. Those who aren't members may attend by either purchasing a Friends membership at the door or beforehand at the library circulation desk.

The quarterly drawing will be announced at the Members Only Sale, and the winner will receive a $25 gift certificate for Delavan's Restaurant.

Rummage sale in the College Forum held by Alpha Epsilon Gamma

Batavia Society of Artists' Spring Show opening reception at Richmond library

The Batavia Socity of Artists will hold an Opening Reception for its Spring Show from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday, May 17, in the Gallery Room at Richmond Memorial Library.

It is free and open to the public.

Also Genesee Community College student Dustin Pratt recipient for the Virginia Carr-Mumford Scholarship and will receive a certificate. He is showcasing his artwork at the reception.

The library is located at 19 Ross St. in the City of Batavia.

McTeacher night at McDonald's to benefit Oakfield-Alabama elementary school

Batavia McDonald's will be hosting a McTeacher night in conjunction with Oakfield-Alabama Central School. This is a fundraiser that will go to help the elementary school.

On Tuesday night May 8, teachers from Oakfield-Alabama School will come behind the counter and work with McDonald's employees. The event will take place from 5-8 pm.

Fifteen percent of the sales will go directly to the school.

The eatery is located at 4138 W. Main St. Road in the Town of Batavia.

The Alexander Central School District's budget presentation will begin at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 8, in the Secondary School Cafeteria immediately followed by the regular Board of Education business meeting.

The public is encouraged to attend. Budget information can be accessed on the school Web site as well as the public agenda prior to the meeting at www.alexandercsd.org.
