34th annual Picnic in the Park at Centennial Park, Batavia

The 34th annual Picnic in the Park celebration will take place from noon to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, July 4, in Centennial Park, located at Richmond and Ellicott avenues in the City of Batavia.

It is sponsored by the Genesee-Orleans Regional Arts Council (GO ART!)

Picnic in the Park is a free daylong event featuring activities for families and children, folk art events, entertainment and refreshment stands.

College holds first ever Relay for Life today in conjunction with American Cancer Society

Genesee Community College's Wellness Center is joining forces with the American Cancer Society to sponsor the college's first ever Relay for Life. The GCC event will be a "mini" version of the relays, which traditionally take place overnight.

The campus relay is from 3 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday May 1 at the Student Union during the week-long celebration of the inauguration of new GCC President James Sunser, EdD.

YWCA's premiere Wheels and Heels event will benefit child victims of domestic violence

The YWCA of Genesee County, Inc. will hold its first Wheels and Heels event from 4 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, July 14 at the Genesee County Airport. Cars and clothes will be showcased.

This is a fundraiser to assist the YWCA in developing new programs that serve the innocent, forgotten victims of domestic violence -- the children.

These new programs will serve as an opportunity for the YWCA to uphold its mission through service to the youngest members of our community. To participate in Wheels and Heels, please contact Anita Strollo at the YWCA at 343-5808.

East Pembroke Volunteer Fire Department's annual 4-wheeler Mud Races

On Saturday, Aug. 18, the East Pembroke Volunteer Fire Department will be hosting its 5th annual 4-wheeler Mud Races. Registration begins at 10 a.m., and the racing starts at 1 p.m.

The cost is $15 per wheeler and $10 per spectator. Kids under 11 get in free. The event will be located directly behind the East Pembroke Fire Hall at 2623 W. Main St. Road, East Pembroke.

This is going to be a huge event, with racers coming from all over New York State. The day doesn't end when the races do either! So what else is going on?

Observance of National Crime Victims Week with ceremony, reception and silent walk

Genesee County will observe National Crime Victims' Rights Week with a ceremony, reception and silent walk beginning at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, April 27 at the Batavia City Centre.

This year's keynote speaker is Sandie Bellows, a survivor of a harrowing crime, who will share her story of survival.

McDonald's hosts McTeacher Night to benefit senior class at Batavia High School

Batavia McDonalds will be hosting a McTeacher Night in conjunction with Batavia High School. This is a fundraiser that will go to help the senior class.

From 5 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday April 24, teachers from Batavia High School will come behind the counter and work with McDonald's employees. Fifteen percent of the sales made will go directly to benefit the senior class.

The restaurant is located at 4138 W. Main St. Road.

Adult craft class at Richmond library: making a patriotic angel hanging decoration

Richmond Memorial Library is presenting a patriotic angel decoration class for adults from 6 to 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 15.

Learn how to paint this hanging ornament in a class taught by decorative painter Elaine Becker. A $10 materials fee is due at the time of registration and includes a base-coated wood cutout and paints. Brushes will be provided.

The library is located 19 Ross St., Batavia.

Assemblyman Hawley holds public outreach meeting in Stafford Town Hall

Assemblyman Steve Hawley (R, I, C – Batavia) is hosting his regular monthly outreach meeting for Genesee County residents at Stafford Town Hall from 6 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 4.

“The meeting will provide the people of Western New York with an opportunity to share their thoughts on how to improve the quality of life in our area,” Hawley said. “I strongly encourage all local citizens to attend this event.”

Genesee ARC 'Sprout Film Festival' -- Second Show

The Sprout Film Festival returns to Genesee County on Saturday, March 31, at the Genesee ARC Community Center, 38 Woodrow Road in Batavia. It's free and open to the public.

Sprout is a nonprofit that holds a yearly festival in New York City and opens its library of films from around the world so the "touring festival" can travel all over the country.

The final group of films will be presented at 5 p.m. Doors open at 4 and artwork by local residents with disabilities is also featured. Refreshments will be available for sale until show time.

Artists reception at Roz Steiner Art Gallery

A diverse catalog of art projects produced by Genesee Community College Fine Arts students is on display in the Roz Steiner Art Gallery. The display reflects coursework from painting, drawing, photography, ceramics and 2D and 3D design classes.

The exhibition runs from March 22 through April 26. There will be a public reception for the artists from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, March 30. Many of the student artists will be present and refreshments will be served.

Byron Bergen Sports Boosters hold annual Faculty vs. NYS Troopers charity game

The Byron Bergen Sports Boosters will hold their 5th annual Faculty vs. NYS Troopers Charity Basketball Game at 6 p.m. on Friday, March 23 in the high school gymnasium.

The high school is located 6917 W. Bergen Road in Bergen.

Proceeds from the game will be donated to the sports programs at The Gillam Grant Community Center. Admission to the game is $1 students, $2 adults with a $6 family maximum.

Concessions including pizza, snacks, candy and beverages will be available.

Benefit for man who suffered brain injury after attack in Rochester

A benefit for Randy Tonner II and his son Maddox is being held from 1 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, March 24 at the American Legion Post in Basom. Randy suffered traumatic brain injury on July 2, 2011 after being attacked and assaulted by two people in Rochester on his way home.

The location is 6554 Alleghany Road (Alabama corners Rts 63/77) across from the Holley Farms store.

There will be a Chinese Auction, 50/50 Raffle, beef on weck dinner and DJ music donated by TOAST.
