Glass making demo at Oatka School of Glass in Batavia

The Batavia Society of Artists is having its first demo of the year from 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, March 13, at the Oatka School of Glass, 56 Harvester Ave.

This is inside the Harvester Industrial Center. Use the main entrance, then take elevator or stairs to 2nd floor.

Amanda and Lance Taylor will instruct in the art of glass making and demonstrate the glass bead making process with hands on pendant and 2" x 3" hanging glass art pieces.

Info meeting at St. Joe's for parents of kindergarteners

St. Joseph's School in Batavia will hold an informational meeting for the parents of students who will attend kindergarten in the fall. It begins at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 1, at the school, located at 2 Summit St. Free child care will be provided.

Adult book discussion group focuses on "The Call"

The Adult Book Discussion Group will meet at Richmond Memorial Library at 7 p.m on Monday, March 12, to discuss "The Call" by Yannick Murphy.

The book is the 2012 selection for “A Tale for Three Counties” community-reads project for Genesee, Orleans and Wyoming counties. Books are available to borrow or to purchase at the front desk. Refreshments served.

Free, live jazz tonight at Moonjava Cafe on Harvester Avenue, Batavia

Live jazz will be performed tonight beginning at 8 at Moonjava Cafe in Batavia, located at 56 Harvester Ave. Admission is free.

The cafe opens at 7 p.m. and features great coffee, baked goods, sandwiches and wraps for sale.

Come and enjoy jazz standards and other favorites performed by Dan Deluca (guitar), Jonathan Jaeger (bass) and Glen Cummings. They are set to play until 9:30 p.m.

St. James Fish Fry

St. James fish fries are held each Friday through March 31. Take-outs begin at 4:30 p.m.; dining room seating at 5 p.m.

Baked or fried fish; baked potato or french fries. Meals cost $8.50, beverages and desserts are also available. There are no phone-in orders for take-outs.

March 3 benefit for 9-year-old with rare brain tumor

Noah Ludwig is a bright, energetic, smart, 9-year-old boy who loves sports and just having a good time. Recently he was diagnosed with a rare brain tumor that will put him in the hospital for three weeks, and then recovery after that.

Friends and family of Noah have joined together to help him and his family with this hard road that they will face. A benefit has been put together to raise money for Noah's medical expenses. We are asking for your support in helping this little guy and his family get through this very trying time in their lives.

Assemblyman Hawley holds Town Hall Day in Le Roy

Assemblyman Steve Hawley (R, I, C – Batavia) is hosting his regular monthly outreach meeting for Genesee County residents at Le Roy Town Hall this coming Wednesday. All members of the public are invited and encouraged to attend.

“The meeting will offer the people of Western New York a chance to share their views, concerns and suggestions to improve the quality of life in our area,” Hawley said. “I strongly encourage all local citizens to attend this event.”

The meeting is from 6 to 7 p.m., Feb. 22. Le Roy Town Hall is located at 48 Main St., Le Roy.

Cub Scout Pack 6069 holds Pinewood Derby at St. James

Cub Scout Pack 6069 will have its Pinewood Derby beginning at 10:30 a.m. this Saturday, Feb. 18, at St. James Episcopal Church in Batavia. It is located at 405 E. Main St.

The scouts had a fundraiser earlier in the year to raise funds to buy a new track.

Their were able to buy the track and will use it for the first time Saturday. Cubmaster Bruce Bartz invites the community to attend. It will be fun!

Assemblyman Hawley hosts blood drive in Batavia

Assemblyman Steve Hawley (R, I, C – Batavia) is hosting a blood drive at the Batavia Salvation Army Headquarters, 529 E. Main St., on from noon to 5 p.m. tommorrow, Feb. 17. The assemblyman is encouraging anyone able to donate to stop by the event and help save a life.

All those who have not donated since Dec. 23 are encouraged to participate. If you wish to donate, you may call 1-800-RED CROSS to schedule an appointment, or visit redcrossblood.org. Walk-ins are accepted as well.

Yannick Murphy, author of 'The Call', speaks at Richmond library

Yannick Murphy, author of the novel "The Call," will speak at Richmond Memorial Library in Batavia beginning at 7 p.m., Thursday,  March 22.

A question-and-answer and book signing follows.

This presentation is part of “A Tale for Three Counties” 2012, the community-reads project for Genesee, Orleans and Wyoming counties. Murphy, whose novel has received multiple starred reviews, will speak at three other locations in the three counties.

Traditional Irish music performed for adults at Richmond library

Richmond Memorial Library is offering “The Call” Craft Challenge Pouch class from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, March 6.

In this class for adults, Jen Reardon will teach how to sew an appliquéd wool felt pouch in an original design inspired by “The Call” by Yannick Murphy.

Info meeting for youth football and cheerleading program planned in Alexander area

Tri-Town Youth Athletics is planning to start a youth football program and has scheduled a meeting for Thursday, Feb. 16 to provide more information to interested parents. It begins at 7 p.m. in the Alexander Elementary School Gym, located at 3314 Buffalo St. between routes 20 and 98.

Tri-Town Youth Athletics primarily serves the Alexander Central School District -- covering Alexander, Darien and Bethany -- but kids from all over the area are welcome to take part. It also offers baseball, softball, basketball and soccer programs.

Richmond library offers free eBook Class, registration required

Richmond Memorial Library in Batavia is offering an eBook Class from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 10. Registration is required for this free class and group size is limited. Call the library at 343-9550, ext. 2, to register.

Participants will learn how to borrow and download eBooks from the library’s website. At 11 a.m., instruction will be given for the Nook, Sony, and Kobo readers. At 12 p.m., instruction will be given for the Kindle.

HLOM February lecture topic: Ely Parker, Seneca chief and Civil War officer

February's topic in the ongoing Holland Land Office Museum lecture series is Ely Parker.

The Seneca chief, known by his people at Do-ne-bo-ga-wa, was a Civil War officer and the writer of the Terms of Surrender at Appomattox Court House.

The presentation about Parker will be made by Terry Abrams, of the Western New York Association of Historical Agencies as well as the Tonawanda Indian Reservation Historical Society.

The lecture begins at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 18, at the museum, located at 131 W. Main St. in the City of Batavia. Phone is 343-4727.

Adult class on how to crochet a necklace at Richmond library

A class for adults on how to crochet a necklace will be offered from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 27, at Richmond Memorial Library.

Learn how to combine wire, beads, and a silver chain to create a necklace in this class taught by Jen Reardon.

An $8 materials fee is due at the time of registration. Participants for this class must know how to chain crochet. Please bring a G crochet hook.

Extreme couponing seminar, plus deals and Chinese auction at YWCA

An event on "extreme couponing" with local "master couponer" Michelle Kelsey will be held this Thursday, Feb. 2, at the YWCA in the City of Batavia. The location is 301 North St.

The free event will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. and feature a how-to demonstration, and "cash-and-carry" deals and coupons. There will be a Chinese auction, free refreshments and free child care.
