St. Paul Lutheran School's annual benefit auction

Mark your calendars! The St. Paul Lutheran School Annual Benefit Auction is set for Saturday, Feb. 11. Going once, going twice, SOLD!

Each year St. Paul raises more than $80,000 to provide an affordable Christian education for 3-year-old preschool through fifth-grade students in our community.

The auction will take place in the St. Paul Lutheran School lunchroom (church basement) at 31 Washington Ave., Batavia. Doors open at 4 p.m. and the auctioneer begins at 5.

Chinese auction, pancake breakfast to benefit Byron Fire Department

A Chinese auction and pancake breakfast to benefit the Byron Volunteer Fire Department will be held from 8 a.m. to noon on Sunday, Feb. 19 at the fire hall. It is located on Route 262, just east of Route 237 in the Hamlet of Byron.

St. Joseph's School holds Open House

St. Joseph Catholic School in Batavia will kick off Catholic Schools Week with a family mass at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday, Jan. 29, followed by a family luncheon, followed at 2 p.m. with an open house for prospective students and families. The school is located at 2 Summit St.

The theme for this year's Catholic Schools Week, which is celebrated nationally Jan. 29 through Feb. 5, is "Faith, Academics, Service." These three priorities of Catholic schools stand out from other educational institutions.

Woolly Book Worms meet at Richmond library

Woolly Book Worms will meet at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 11, in the Children's Room at Richmond Memorial Library.

This a book discussion group for students in third through fifth grades, accompanied by their favorite adult (feel free to bring a knitting, crocheting or another project to work on).

"The Willoughbys," by Lois Lowery, will be this month's topic.

Light refreshments will be provided.

Journal class for adults at Richmond library

“The Call” Journal Class will be offered at Richmond Memorial Library beginning at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 21.

Are you intrigued by the journal style of this year’s book for "A Tale for Three Counties"? Learn how to make your own journal in this paper-crafting class for adults led by Jennifer Cascells.

Using lunch bags, decorative papers and a variety of embellishments, you will have a small journal ready to fill with your thoughts and memories. An $8 materials fee is due at the time of registration.

'Valentine Sweetie' decoration class for adults at Richmond library

A "Valentine Sweetie" decoration class will be offered beginning at 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 7 at Richmond Memorial Library.

Learn how to paint a seasonal wall hanging in this class for adults taught by decorative painter Elaine Becker. A $7 materials fee is due at the time of registration.

Optional items to bring include: small sea sponge, small flat or filbert brush, large flat brush, and a good liner brush.

Letting go of clutter is focus of free workshop at Richmond library

“Keep Your Memories, Let Go of the Clutter” is the title of a free workshop beginning at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 22 at Richmond Memorial Library.

Are you ready to finally "let go" of your clutter but don't know how to begin? This fun and informative program will show how to sort between treasures and trash so that you can have the home you've always wanted.

Tips will be provided to help you start--and finish--the process. You also will learn where to send your treasures so they can be enjoyed by others!

Caberet 2012 to benefit St. Jame's church and Community Action

The annual benefit Cabaret is set for 7 to 10 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 11 at St. Jame's Episcopal Church. It's located at 405 E. Main St. in the City of Batavia.

The event is for adults. Cost is $20 and includes desserts and hors d' oeuvres. There will be basket raffles and entertainment by Jon Seiger and Bev Miller.

Proceeds benefit the church's restoration fund and Community Action of Orleans & Genesee. Phone 343-7798 for tickets.

Pasta dinner and raffle to help ailing seventh-grader

St. James Episcopal Church is having a pasta dinner and basket raffle on Jan. 16 for a seventh-grader who has Hodgkins Lymphoma.

Brandon Johns attends Batavia Middle School and was diagnosed last October. He has gone through a series of powerful chemotherapy sessions and now radiation treatments, all at Strong Hospital in Rochester.

There are so many expenses that insurance does not pay for.

Richmond library offers 'eBook Open House'

Richmond Memorial Library is offering an “eBook Open House” from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 28. Anyone interested in learning how to borrow and download library books for their eReader is invited to attend.

O-A school district hosts meeting on bullying

Oakfield-Alabama Central School District is hosting a “town hall style” meeting on bullying beginning at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 26 in the middle/high school auditorium. The purpose of the meeting is to educate and engage parents and community about the serious issue of bullying.

The community is invited to learn more about bullying, what our district is doing about it, and what they can do to help. The format of the meeting will consist of a presentation on bullying, current legislation, school programming, various local agencies that can assist, and a Q & A period.

'The Hunger Games' topic of book discussion group at Richmond library

The Adult Book Discussion Group will meet at Richmond Memorial Library on Wednesday, Jan. 11 to discuss "The Hunger Games" by Suzanne Collins. Books are available at the front desk.

Pembroke HS girls' basketball team plays Attica to battle breast cancer

Breast cancer is a life-threatening opponent that has significantly impacted the rural community of Pembroke. As a result, a group of Pembroke High School athletes has decided to challenge the invasive disease by doing what they do best -- playing basketball.

Tonight at 7, the Pembroke High School Girls' Varsity Basketball Team will take to the court for a “Shooting for the Cure" benefit basketball game against Attica High School to raise money for breast cancer research.

The high school is located at 8750 Alleghany Road (Route 77) in Corfu.

Corfu-Pembroke Community Winterfest

John Lamond of WYRK will emcee the annual Corfu-Pembroke Community Winterfest. This year's focus is the Town of Pembroke's Bicentennial, hosted by Town historian Al Starkweather.

The event will be held from 1 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 28 at the community center, 116 E. Main St. in Corfu.

Entertainment includes the musical talents of the Craig Wilkins Band and the local community band.

Free Spaghetti Dinner: Pasta for Peace

The third “Pasta for Peace” free spaghetti dinner, will be held on Thursday, Jan. 12, 2012 at 6:30 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, 300 E. Main St., in Batavia. Former Sheriff Doug Call will be the featured speaker.

Call was recently honored by Genesee County Democratic Party leaders for his long commitment to public service.

Night hike at Genesee County Park and Forest

If you would enjoy taking a walk in a winter wonderland, there is one planned in the evening on Saturday, Feb. 11 at Genesee County Park.

Using snowshoes, participants will be guided through a night hike at Genesee County Park and Forest under the full moon and finish at Pavilion A for refreshments and a warm fire. Snowshoes will be provided.

Time is from 6 to 8 p.m. Preregistration is required. Call 344-1122 to make reservations. Cost is $8 per person. Dress for cold weather.
