AmeriCorps hosts 'DeWitt Park Wildlife Planting Project' in Batavia

Genesee County AmeriCorps will host a planting project at Batavia's DeWitt Recreation Area, 119 Cedar St., on April 24 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Around 50 volunteers are needed.

The goal of this project is to remove invasive plant species from the park and to raise plants designed to reduce soil erosion, provide the wildlife with food and shelter, and give visitors something more aesthetically pleasing to look at.

Supplies and water will be available, but volunteers are encouraged to bring their own water as well.

13th Annual John Gardner Conference

The 13th John Gardner Conference April 24, 2010

 The John Gardner Society and Genesee Community College invite you to attend The 13th John Gardner Conference. The conference will provide scholars, teachers, writers, fans and other interested parties an opportunity to gather and exchange ideas about Gardner, his works, and approaches to teaching his works.

 

We are also seeking one-page abstracts of proposals.  Topics concerning his fiction, non-fiction, operas, drama, poetry, or teaching will be considered.  Sessions on teaching his fiction, his methods of teaching, or using his work for creative writing are encouraged.    Presentation length may vary between fifteen and twenty minutes.  Abstracts will be published on the John Gardner Society webpage.

Eastman Wind Ensemble performs at GCC May 1 only

Rochester's Eastman Wind Ensemble will perform in the Stuart Steiner Theatre Saturday, at 7:30 p.m. on May 1 at the GCC Batavia campus. Only one performance is scheduled for this highly anticipated, world renowned musical ensemble.

Free car-care clinic for women offered

A free car-care clinic for women will be held beginning at 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 28 at Dan’s Tire and Auto, 48 Batavia City Centre in Batavia. The class is designed to better acquaint women with their vehicles’ and prepare them for emergency situations.

There will be hands-on demonstrations, including examples of broken and worn-out parts. The class will include explanations of warning lights, how to check the fluids under the hood, how to change a tire and what to do if an accident occurs.

State Court of Appeals Associate Justice to speak at GCC

Genesee Community College's Criminal Justice Club is pleased to welcome New York State Court of Appeals Associate Judge Eugene Pigott Jr., to the Batavia Campus on Thursday, April 15.

Judge Pigott will present an overview of the Criminal Justice Court process and lead a discussion regarding issues facing today's courtrooms. The presentation will take place from 1 to 2 p.m. in the Conable Technology Building, room T102. This event is free and open to the public.

Local hockey team to hold flapjack fundraiser

The Batavia Ice Devils Hockey Team is sponsoring a flapjacks fundraiser from 8 to 10 a.m. on Sunday, April 11. It’s a great breakfast deal for $5.

The racy musical "Chicago" comes to GCC April 8-10

'Friends of the Library Monthly Book Sale' at Richmond Library

On April 1, the Friends of the Library will hold their monthly book sale -- which is on the first Thursday of every month -- at the Richmond Library, 19 Ross St. in Batavia.

Adult, teen and children's books will be for sale. Book prices will range from $0.25 to $5, depending on how recently the book was published.

The book sale begins at 9 a.m. and ends at 7 p.m.

Breakfast with the Easter Bunny aids Le Roy Nursery School

LeRoy Nursery School will be holding "Breakfast with the Easter Bunny" at McDonalds in Le Roy from 9 to 11 a.m. on Sunday March 28.

The public is invited to hop on over. The event will help raise funds for the non-profit nursery school. No carrot jokes, please.

Free interactive, self-defense demonstration March 25 at GCC

There will be a domestic violence/sexual assault interactive self-defense demonstration beginning at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, March 25 at Genesee Community College. Both men and women are encouraged to participate.

Cyndy Jones, an adjunct instructor at Genesee will instruct the hands-on seminar. It is free and open to the public and will be held in Room E214.

The Genesee Community College Honors Program is hosting the seminar.

'Music in Our Schools' concert will be held at Batavia High School

"Music in Our Schools" celebrates musical education and extracurricular activities, and it features performances from Batavia students at all grade levels.

The free concert begins at 7 p.m., Thursday, March 25 in the Batavia High School auditorium, 260 State St. It will last about an hour and 15 minutes and the public is invited to attend.

Batavia's St. James Episcopal Church hosts fish fry

St. James Episcopal Church has a fish fry every Friday during Lent. The cost is $7.50 for dinner and $2.50 for a la carte dessert. All proceeds benefit the Restoration Fund of St. James Church.

Take-outs will be available starting at 4:30 p.m., and the dining room will be open for a sit-down dinner at 5.

Free delivery for the elderly and shut-ins of Batavia is available.

The remaining fish fry dates are March 19, March 26 and April 2.

Batavia ladies' ministry invites people to make Easter crafts for old folks

The Ladies' Ministry of the Batavia City Church invites the public to make Easter crafts for nursing-home residents on Tuesday, March 23.

The craft session will be held at the church, located at 210 East Main St., beginning at 6:30 p.m.

No craft experience necessary, only the desire to "have a great time with great ladies."

'MAMMOTH Sale' and 'Antique Alley' to be held at St. Joseph's in Batavia

St. Joseph's School will hold its sixth annual MAMMOTH Sale, featuring tens of thousands of garage sale items, on Saturday, April 10. Plus, there will be a new feature called "Antique Alley."

Items for sale will include antique furniture, glassware, a baby buggy from around 1800, kitchen utensils, toys, books (including the "Bobbsey Twins" series), cameras and other local antiques. Only cash will be accepted for payment.

The sale runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the school located at 2 Summit St. in the City of Batavia.

McMahon School of Irish Dance hosts annual Batavia Irish Afternoon

Come celebrate Batavia's Irish Afternoon!  McMahon School of Irish Dance will be holding its annual fundraiser on Sunday, March 28, 2010, from 2:00 to 5:30 pm at The Forum at Genesee Community College.  Live music will be provided by Penny Whiskey, and of course our own local McMahon Irish dancers will perform throughout the event.  $10 admission includes hors d'oeuvres, snacks, soft drinks, and $900 in door prize raffles.  There will also be a 50/50 drawing and a Chinese Auction.  Children 10 and under are free.  Proceeds from the event benefit the McMahon School Parent Group costume/travel/equipment fund.  Tickets can be purchased by calling (585) 813-8701.  For more information visit: www.McMahonIrishDance.com

 

'Maple Weekend' in Alexander, Darien

Regular meeting of Batavia School Board set for Monday

The Batavia Board of Education will hold a regular meeting at the board office, 39 Washington Ave., beginning at 8 p.m. All are welcome to attend.

The board will meet in closed executive session for about an hour, beginning at 7 p.m. The public meeting will begin afterwards.

Longtime Stafford historian to be honored March 25

Grace Woodworth, who served as Town Historian of Stafford for 17 years, will be honored by the Stafford Historical Society at its monthly membership meeting on Thursday, March 25.

It begins at 7 p.m. in the Town Hall on Rte. 237 in Stafford.

A DVD will be shown of an interview with her in which she recalls memories of growing up on a farm in Morganville. The public in invited to attend.

Traveling to Canada? Get your passport ready - fees may increase

The Genesee County Clerk’s office will hold our “National Passport Day” from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, March 26 at 15 Main Street, County Building #1.

As with “National Passport Day in the USA 2010” on March 27, it's a reminder to residents that traveling to Canada now requires either a passport card, passport book or enhanced license if the traveler is over 19 years old.
