Changes slated for Bank Street crosswalk

By Howard B. Owens

With out a vote, but by consensus the City Council agreed Monday night to make two key changes to the Bank Street crosswalk, connecting the City Centre parking lot to Genesee County for the Aging.

The cross walk will be restriped to help make drivers more aware of the cross walk, and removable rumble strips (so that can be taken up during winter) that will alert drivers to the cross walk, will be added to the area, which is close to the Bank Street intersection with Main Street.

In response to a council question, City Manager Jason Molino said there have been no known car-pedestrian accidents -- which Chief Randy Baker said was right -- at the crosswalk, but because of the heavy traffic, the number of seniors who use the crosswalk and the number of ingress/egress points on Bank Street, improved safety was a good idea.

A third safety change -- adding a left-turn-only sign to the exit of the YMCA parking lot will require a code change and a public hearing. No date was set for that hearing.

Good idea. Trying to cross with my son for years for swim lessons was very interesting to say the least. We actually had teens one time step on the gas and laugh as we were forced to run to get out of the way. Do note the difference when you drive by Batavia Downs. People stop if a pedestrian is barely out of the building. People, it is the law: if someone is crossing in your half of the road, you must stop to let them cross. Thankfully, no one has been killed crossing Bank Street. I am grateful that it doesn't take a record of pedestrian v. auto accidents to put something there to slow people down.

I try to be very conscious of the crosswalks both at Bank Street and the Downs. I don't know why people wouldn't, but I agree it's a good idea to try to improve safety before something tragic happens.

How about courtesy? I know it's not the law to be kind, but it wouldn't be a terrible idea. Karma, pay it forward, you get the idea. Some things are more important than getting there 30 seconds earlier. I thought that's what your crackberry is for?? To save you precious time? Ask yourself this question....if that little old lady waiting at the crosswalk was your mom or grandma, wouldn't you want someone to be patient with them? Or would you still be "WTF, hurry up"? You are not alone Peter...alot of folks are in a hurry to get no where fast. But in our quest for instant gratification, we lose sight of humanity. And humanity is what differentiates us from the animal kingdom. JMO

Not sure who said something about a pedestrian waiting or not, but here is the NYS law:

When there is no traffic control signal, drivers must yield the right-of-way to pedestrians, particularly if a pedestrian is in a crosswalk, or there is potential danger to the pedestrian [Section 1151, NYS Vehicle & Traffic Law].

In addition, every driver approaching an intersection or crosswalk must yield the right-of-way to a pedestrian accompanied by a guide dog or a cane [Section 1153-c, NYS Vehicle & Traffic Law].
