Photo: Michael Caccamise memorial

By Howard B. Owens

I've looked at this memorial a few times in the past couple of years. It is mounted on the fence behind the courthouse above the Tonawanda Creek.

The sign reads: "Michael Caccamise and two playmates fell through the ice and into the icy waters of the Tonawanda Creek on Feb. 10, 1932. The bodies of Harry Campebello, age 10, and Frank Bezon, age 9, were recovered on Feb. 13th near the dam. However, Michael’s body was not recovered until July 8, 1932.

There are more than a few memorials to children who have passed away long before their time in Genesee County.

Howard, as a personal favor, I'm asking you to take a trip out to Alexander to see the field dedicated to Chris Martin.

Chris was a classmate of mine and one of the few people I've met over the course of my life who were simply decent to the core.

Chris is right. Chris Martin was simply a great human being taken from this earth way to young. Those that knew him will never forget his ever present smile and laugh. Take a look at the field and all the people who donated and worked on it. If you do speak to his family you will meet some of the greatest people in the area.

It's up behind the Alexander Elementary school. It has soccer and baseball fields as well as benches honoring several other Alexander youths that passed too soon.

I mean no disrespect but this is a great opportunity for a great Jam Carrol song:
