Corwin gets nod from state Independence Party

By Billie Owens

Here's a news release from Republican candidate Jane Corwin.

WILLIAMSVILLE – Jane Corwin, businesswoman and unanimously endorsed Republican candidate for New York’s 26th Congressional District, announced today that she has received the endorsement of the New York State Independence Party.

Corwin received the unanimous endorsement after a meeting held by the Independence Party on Saturday, March 12.

“I appreciate the support shown by the New York State Independence Party and thank them for their endorsement,” Corwin said. “The support I’ve been shown by so many has been truly humbling.

"I’ve heard the message from Western New Yorkers loud and clear – they want Washington to cut spending and stop the borrow-and-spend policies from the last few years, and they want those elected to serve the people to focus on strengthening the economy to create jobs.

"If honored to be Western New York’s next representative in Congress, Western New Yorkers can count on me to represent their values and fight for them in Washington.”

By receiving the endorsement this weekend, Corwin’s name will now appear on two ballot lines when the special election for New York's 26th District is held on Tuesday, May 24.

So the Independence Party didn't even bother to consider a candidate of the Democratic Party. I remember when the Independence Party wanted to stake out the middle of the spectrum and run its own candidates. Now they just cross endorse other parties' candidates ... to the right only now, it appears.

And the chances of Corwin being an independent legislator, that is independent of the Republicans? I believe the correct answer here is "absolute zero".

I think it's a shame that the Independence party, the 3rd largest party in the state, doesn't back their own candidate. Mr. Bellavia would be a logical choice. I wish the Modern Whigs had that auto-line on the ballot. They sure as hell wouldn't cross endorse what has become the problem, self-interested millionaires and perverted tickle monsters.

I am going the Bellavia route. After the Conservative party just handed Corwin their endorsement and defended it by saying in reference to her 1st trimester abortion comment that the seat is more than just a single issue seat. I am going to reject the Republican/Conservative expectation that we except their candidate even if they waiver from the party platform. I have bought into the party rhetoric in the past that I need to vote for certain candidates in order to secure the election. I want to be able to stand before my Creator and justify my choices.

Jeff, Bellavia still has to get himself petitioned onto an independent line. Petitions are available on his website and I'm sure he would appreciate the help.

So since Bellavia lives in Batavia and I've never spoken with him, I thought it would be worthwhile to sit down and talk with him.

I sent in an interview request a week ago. I haven't heard a peep.

How serious is he?
