Dogs in hot cars reported

By Billie Owens

A crowd of people is reportedly standing around a maroon sedan in the parking lot of Walmart -- concerned with the welfare of a dog left inside with the windows barely cracked. Law enforcement is responding and there's another complaint like this pending at Target.

What is wrong with people? We are reminded every year about the dangers of leaving children and pets in cars. Yet every year we hear of children dying from heat stroke. Who knows how many pets die. There should be a law that if a child or animal is left unattended, that bystanders could knock a window out.

I am disgusted by the way people treat their animals, especially leaving them in hot parked vehicles unattended. I have pasted a great article from the ASPCA regarding this issue. Please read it, and our state of New York does have the law to address the problem of animals left in cars in extreme temperatures. Under these laws, police, animal control agents, peace officers and others may be authorized to enter a vehicle by whatever means necessary to remove an animal. In the article just click on 14 states to see that NY is in fact one of them.

So whatever means necessary would definitely fit breaking a window if you needed to rescue a dog.

You realize that and others means other officials? Like fire, rescue, emt, sp's et al. If a regular person attempts to break a car window you can be still be liable both civil and criminal. The ASPCA does good work but doent impress me much especailly with what the people they allow to associate with their organization like the wyoming county aspca that recently was raided due to the cruel conditions the animals were kept in.

Yeah... Scott, that was a pretty ignorant statement. No animal deserves to suffer like that.

When it gets this hot out, please leave your dogs at home. I know you might love to bring them everywhere, but you need to consider their safety. Leaving them to cook in a hot car is just torture.
