Political Phone Calls

By Carla McCurley

I have been getting at least two, sometimes three, telephone calls every day soliciting votes for one particular candidate for State Senate.  Last night I actually begged them to please stop calling me.  It would be nice if the Do Not Call lists also pertained to political candidates and their parties.

On the subject of unsolicited telephone calls, some of the calls we get now from charitable organizations are amusing to me;  we have had three requests from organizations that, when we advised we would give a certain amount ($10.00), we were told that this was below their MINUMUM CONTRIBUTION AMOUNT!!

Oh, my.

If the phone calls are coming from a campaign and they are calling your house multiple times, that shouldn't be happening. But what happens (and this happened during the 26th district Democratic primary) is that unions and other groups are calling on behalf of candidates. Those groups get the same lists the campaign gets. That leads to no coordination and people getting multiple calls from the campaign and groups supporting that candidate. I agree - it can be a nuisance. But knowing the process, it's just an innocent mistake.

My advice as someone who once got yelled at and berated by someone who I was calling is to be kind and just say that you have already been contacted by the campaign. I know what it's like to get yelled at for such an innocent mistake and it can really turn you off to making calls again. We want people to call, so just remain positive and ask that anyone who is calling from the campaign to please not call again.
