Popular skydiving event grounded

By Howard B. Owens

The Batavia Boogie, which has brought skydivers from all over the region to Genesee County Airport for 19 years, is grounded, reports WBTA.

Paul Gath of Frontier Skydivers said his group decided to cancel this years event rather than fight the county over liability concerns.

Last year, a skydiver died when his parachute failed to open.

County Legislator Jay Grasso explains the county's position.

I can understand the County's reluctance based upon last year's tragic event. But it is a sad state of affairs when the insurance/liability tail wags the event dog.

I agree. ANother case of over reaction by politicians. Every org in the area gets waivers for many various events all the time. If the reason is actually what they claim.

If you ask members of the club, they will tell you that some county official didn’t think he was treated well last year by the club, and this is his way of getting even. Knowing many of the members, I tend to believe them.

The County could have given an insurance waiver, which is all that is needed. Too bad because they did bring money into the area for a week.

Again, remember this petty stuff at election time.
