Trio accused of breaking into apartments on Clinton Street Road, Batavia

By Howard B. Owens

Three men from Utica have been arrested and charged with burglary for allegedly breaking into apartments yesterday at 5219 Clinton St. Road, Batavia.

They reportedly broke into the apartments during the late morning hours and stole or damaged clothing and electronics.

Taken into custody were:

  • Rastafari A. Brown, 20, of 124 James St., Utica
  • Kayshawn Jones, 21, of 1556 Elm St., Utica
  • Sirdell L. Ruffin, 21, of Faxton St., Utica.

Each of the three men were charged with four counts of burglary in the second degree and jailed on $25,000 bail.

The case was investigated by Deputy John Duyssen, Deputy Bradley Mazur, Sgt. Gregory Walker, Investigator William Ferrando and Investigator Kristopher Kautz with assistance from the Batavia Police Department, the New York State Police and the District Attorney's office.

What you consider a "normal" name may very well be viewed by other cultures as "silly". I actually really like Rastafari but since I'm not a Rasta, it wouldn't make much sense to name a child that (not to mention that my child bearing years are pretty much over). Jah will never let you down.

Giving your children these types of names just targets them for torture their entire life. Like the song says, don't give your boy the name of Sue.

Don't you think the name 'Doug' or 'Chris' for that matter would sound stupid in Ethiopia. What about Hong Kong? Of course, there is the chance that folks from those cultures don't see a strange-sounding name as a justification to poke fun.

Your prejudices are driving your comments here. People with 'these types of names' are only subject to 'torture their entire life' because people like you are doing the torturing.

I've never tortured anyone...wait...I could be wrong. Where did you see me being prejudiced? They're just terrible names and I'd bet many would agree with me.

That's what I was thinking too, Bob. Utica -> Batavia? Huh? Whatever they're names are ~ good bye! Don't need them around here. Just go back to wherever the *ell they came from. Yep, losers.

Hey guys, not to be prejudiced or overly stereotypical, do you think these three thugs were here for other nefarious reasons like drug running or to find someone that owed them money, etc? I'm not saying anything outwardly racial but other people here have mentioned that these three names are associated with certain cultures. A culture known to have certain behaviors. I got blamed for it but I'm not even the one that said it. Scroll up and tell me I'm wrong.
