Today's Poll: What should be the U.S. response to apparent nuclear weapons development by Iran?

By Howard B. Owens
DOUGLAS MCCLURG

1ST-This developement didn't recently start-been going on for a decade or more
2nd Iran has been warned and sanctioned previously
3rd direct answer to the survey.spies, more Intelligence gathering.basically the U.S should put In all the effort to gain knowledge of every neighborhood there.Iran Is not just one big desert. They have cities and villages. These people are smart.the believe In a God that allows killing and hate.Thats the way they were born, all they know.some may be more rational than others.
So the U.S. should prepare the plans for a ground war with air assault.I say only prepare and believe that we already are preparing.diplomacy only goes so far.we are willing to give these people billions of dollars If they come to our side. One might say billions of dollars and yes we do It for all countries around the world.probably actually cheaper than a full scale war.
But we can only try to reason for so long with them.If they weren't doing these test and defying world law we could leave them alone.
4th get as many countries on our side and take action if all else fails.Sadamn was given 3-4 month of occupying kuwait b4 we rolled In and moved them out.
bottom line Is very sad
world war 2 helped nend the "Great Depression" and all this may be coming at the right time for the economic situation In this country today
FACT-Isreal is at grave dangers If Iran pursues these ambitions

Bottom line: If and when Israel decides Iran is a threat, they will neutralize the threat. Period. We should continue support the Israelis as we do. WW2 ended the depression, because the idle manufacturing plants were started back up to make guns, ammo, jeeps, tanks, uniforms etc., and people were employed by the government military and otherwise. What manufacturing plants do we have to re-start in this country? If anyone tried to start a draft there will be an absolute rebellion because we can't have little Johnny or Susie, the children of the American bourgeoisie going to war, that's reserved for the poor and minorities, as long as they keep on breeding we don't need to get everyone else involved.

The second comment says: "the[y] believe In a God that allows killing and hate. Thats the way they were born"

Yes, if this your view, then kill and hate them in return. I suppose it's also your view that your God would even encourage you to do so. That's the way they were born? Not much leeway for any kind of initiatives or even hope if that's the case. Seems like your position is a mirror image of their position. Maybe your God has more in common with their God than you think?

By the way, with regard to Iran I support various kinds of diplomatic and and economic snactions, especially if in concert with other nations. However the downside to that approach is that it almost always emboldens the leaders, often builds even greater popular support, and hurts the leaders least and the masses most. Sanctions bring mixed results at best. The bottom line favoring sanctiosns is that it gives the sanctioner a feeling that it is at least doing something rather than nothing.

Those countries seeking nuclear weapons capability? Their usual rationale is that "the big boys have them so we want them too". Of course, the genie is out of the bottle with regard to nuclear technology, so its barely possible to imagine a nuclear-free world at this point. As long as the big boys consider these things to be essential components of foreign and military policy others will want them, too.

We MUST protect Isreal. I believe we can do so in a support role at this point. Isreal has very effective air attack capabilities along with the willingness to use them with swift precision. We do not have the resources to deploy ground troops nor should we. If we have learned a lesson from Iraq and Afghanistan, it is that you cannot fight radical fundamentalism with traditional warfare tactics. This is a portable ideology, when you occupy one nation, they simlpy flourish in a neighboring country. We cannot and should not continue to stretch our resources trying to irradicate an ideology that has evaded our conventional warfare.(I know what you are thinking, is this really Jeff?) I will take this oppotunity to point out the hypocrisy of the right on this one. John Boehner and others have chastised Obama for being slow to act on the field Generals call for more troops in Afghanistan. I support Obama (gasp) in taking the time to act on this potential deployment. If this is urgent now, it was equally as urgent two weeks ago, a month ago, 6 months ago, and the right was not sounding tha battle cry for immediate deployment then. The Republicans need to step back on this one and support a decision that takes into consideration lessons learned.

"the believe In a God that allows killing and hate.Thats the way they were born, all they know.some may be more rational than others."

That's an awfully bigoted thing to say... rooted in ignorance of culture and religion. Especially considering the Jewish, Christian and Muslim god are all the same god... all that's different are their main earth-bound prophets and their teachings. Think of it this way... in Spanish, "god" translates to "dios"... so are Spaniards worshiping some other god because they have a different name for it than you do? All these religions draw upon the Old Testament for their god... Christianity says Jesus was the fulfillment of that, Muslims just say he was another prophet sent by god to man, Moses being another... Muhammed being the final prophet sent by god to man.

It has nothing to do with mentioning the word god... it has to do with the fact that one that lives in a glass house should never cast stones. To say that "they believe in a god that allows killing and hate" is also saying you believe in that same god... and you wouldn't be incorrect either. I think you need to take a good hard look at all the killing done in the name of Christianity before you go blaming their religion for anything. Look no further than Yugoslavia or Armenia... or you can even keep it in the US. The Army Of God is an extremist Christian group based right here in the USA, and they seem to love to kill doctors; Christian Identity/Christian Patriots/Lambs of Christ were all tied to the bombing of Atlanta during the 96 Summer Olympics... they are all terrorists too, the worst kind of them... terrorizing their own people. Do I even need to explain what the KKK is to further my point?
