December 1st On Celery Brook

By JIM NIGRO

Though I once fished the little stream in my early years, I never knew it had a name. Not long after we moved to Creek Road, a former neighbor, the late Anthony Torcello, told me it was called Celery Brook. It seems that back in the day, the White Swamp – where the stream originates- was once drained and used to grow celery.

Flowing out of the swamp, the little creek meanders through woods, fields and through another small woodlot before emptying into Tonawanda Creek. It seemed like a good place to capture the season’s first snowfall.

Thanks Susan. Having seen the pics, its funny you should mention fishing. See the first picture? it was practically in that spot where I fished with my uncle back in the 50's.
Most years only small fish are found here, with one or two exceptions. With all the precip we had over the summer, the water level remained high....and fish were able to move in and out.
Great Blue herons find this area to their liking, feeding on the small fish, frogs, etc. Recent years has seen a number of beavers move in as well.

What a great memory to have about time spent with your Uncle!

I could picture wading in the stream, it's very serene. I didn't get to fish much at all this year due to a surgery this spring on a herniated disk in my neck...but hopefully next year I can fish to my heart's content! Stream wading is my favorite! Maybe if I get to fish, I can post about my days out as well. I used to write online articles about my fishing adventures... and some of them were definitely adventures! :)

Susan, hope all goes well with your recovery...if you're suffering from "cabin fever", why not drop by Holland Land Office and pick up a copy of "Dear Sam"....the book was written after the birth of my first grandson...I felt the need to tell him of my early years spent with my Aunt Faith & Uncle Jim...if you enjoy fishing, nature, dogs, etc, you may find it a good read.

Ditto on the stream fishing - or just plain wading! I also want to encourage you to post your fishing adventures...and while you're recuperating and waiting for next year, why not share past experiences?

Looking forward to seeing your adventures in print - tight lines and Merry Christmas!

Thanks Jim...I'll do that. Whenever I read my past fishing excursions I always get the urge to go back out. And... looking back, I am thankful that I wrote these down, because I would never remember the details as they were.
