Louise Slaughter on Town Hall Meetings

By Peter O'Brien

Louise Slaughter will not be holding any town hall meetings on Obamacare.

Here's Why:

http://www.realclearpolitics.com/video/2009/09/03/dem_rep_im_not_doing_town_hall_meetings_im_not_going_to_give_those_people_a_forum.html

"I'm not doing town meetings; I'm not going to give those people a forum. I went through it with the Clinton health care bill, with the John Birch Society, where we had to have police around, and people hysterically crying…"

and town halls are "beneath the dignity of my office".

"Beneath the dignity of my office"? WTF does that mean?? Ms. Slaughter, it is your duty to listen to your constituents. Whether you agree with them or not, it is their right to express to you what is important to them! The statement you made sounds pompous, and it is in fact insulting. While I no longer live in your district, you still represent citizens of the USA, and I am appalled on their behalf!

Louise Slaughter never said that town hall meetings were beneath the dignity of her office. That was Peter's editing. Listen to it. She clearly means that conducting a mob scene is non-productive. I have known Mrs. Slaughter for 30 years and have never met anyone as concerned about The United States and her district. She is justifiably upset with rude and disruptive behavior, as all of us should be.

No you shouldn't be upset at the behavior. People are generally pissed about Obamacare and the fact that they are showing it should be encouraging.

Was that yelling appalling? She was pissed and got angry, why shouldn't the American People?

Regardless it should never be below her dignity to hear what people have to say about legislation while she holds an elected seat.

After witnessing the Massa town hall in Victor, Louise made the right call.I have never witnessed such un-democratic behavior.

Why isn't Chris Lee hosting any?

You are right, it was undemocratic. It was the behavior you see in a republic when those who are being represented in government disagree fundamentally with their represetative.

Explain to me how else the constituents should express thieir anger and hatred at the proposed legislation.

You do realize that this great nation was founder because of town hall meetings where those who attended were just as angry and boisturous right?
