Photos: Blowing glass at Glass Roots

posted by Howard B. Owens in batavia, business, photos, Glass Roots.

One of my longtime goals has been to stop by Glass Roots at 12 Center St., Batavia, some time when Jeremy Almeter is blowing glass. Today, I happened to catch Jeremy in action along with Josh Taggart (bottom photo).

Almeter told me he and Josh can create any kind of glass object a customer might want -- just draw a picture and they'll make it.

A glassblowing acquaintance of mine makes wine bottle stoppers that work perfectly and look really sweet. At $20 each they disappear from his display case quickly, as do the little "Prince Albert" tobacco pipes as well as the big tall unfiltered "Lucky Strike" cigarette water cooled smoking devices that remove many of the carcinogens from cancer sticks. I asked him how much he would charge to teach me how to blow glass. He told me a person would be wasting their money unless it was the only profession in the world that they were willing to work really hard at perfecting, otherwise he wouldn't be doing it himself. It's not a craft, it's an fine art.

Gabor, I think it was a multicolored cool ass blob of tempered glass that will hang from a leather necklace until it slips off and gets picked up by an unknown person at a huge outdoor musical event, like I witnessed happen to my son, but it was too late. Good Karma tells me that the stranger still wears it with regularity. Tempered Glass Fine Art is forever, but not necessarily for you alone if nature determines it is time for someone else to appreciate it as well. I would like a glass blob necklace myself, shaped like a chicken.

George, you couldn't be more right. I am gonna make that chicken blob asap. It's all yours for as long as nature allows. Thanks for the support.
