By Howard B. Owens

Police requested to a business on Liberty Street for a loitering skunk near the front door, that's refusing to leave.

Are you sure it isn't just one of those, people in costume, trying to get you to "get your taxes done here" or" 19.95 oil change special"

I used to feed the local skunk when I lived in Ithaca, I was surrounded by annoying frat annexes there. I found out several things that year, skunks actually purr like cats, they are especially fond of bbq or sweet n sour chicken. And that drunk chicks that hang out at the frat annexes often mistake a skunk for a cat and try to mob it.... I'll just let everyones mind wander on that. :)

Kyle, I can remember when a mama skunk and about 7 babies wandered through our back lawn when I was very little..maybe 4 or 5 years old (44 or 45 years ago). We all went out to watch them and they really paid us no attention. The babies came right up to us and showed no fear. The mama didn't even show any aggression.

Skunks are actually pretty blaze' as long as they're not scared or startled. That'd be pretty cool to have them take food right from the hand.

Well this was 5 yrs ago but my porch was on a walkout basement on the back of the house. This skunk was an opportunist, lived in a wooded lot in the middle of the block and raided trash enclosures. I happened to be outside and eating dinner that Sept evening when he or she ambled up and was obviously following the scent of my chicken. But just like a cat after I gave it the food, it headbumped my hand and I scratched its head and it purred.

Just about November, just before the Thanksgiving break, kids were parting like crazy, the skunk had just gotten a piece of pizza from me. Then went to the next door bldg to dig through the trash. Three girls very obviously drunk were on that bldg's front porch. The saw the skunk and went awwwww....look at the pretty kitty came off the porch to pick it up and maul it with attn. The last thing I saw was the skunk hightailing its way down the side of the bldg, the smell and the scream hit at the same time. LOL Some lessons just arent so pleasant.
