Today's Poll: Should the city install red light cameras at some intersections?

By Howard B. Owens

Doubtful it will happen, these cameras are very expensive to install and monitor. Their value can be challenged successfully in court. And to be honest I dont think they'll be fair about enforcement. Stand at any intersection w a light and watch the commercial trucks blow by lights. In a city like rochester its different as they have so much more traffic. But here people will dispute and it will be less cost effective. Thats my first "blush" so to speak on the issue.

Well it would certainly make fopr some interesting post in here if they did, just the first round of people speading up for yellow lights (Which is Technically Running a Light) would be fodder for lot's of whinning.

I voted no

These traffic-monitoring cameras are all over So. Cal. I am doubtful that they make a big difference in safety. I have no doubt whatsoever that they are moneymakers for the government. I am not in favor of them.

D & C just published an article on fines collected from stoplight cameras in the city of Rochester, triple initial expected revenue. "Total collections stand at $1.8 million since July 1 but were budgeted for just $850,000. After paying Arizona-based Redflex Traffic Systems, which owns, installs and maintains the cameras, the city has recorded a net $600,000 in revenue."
