Carlton Gene Smith

Carlton Gene “Smitty” Smith, 88, of Batavia passed away on Tuesday December 29, 2015 at the Buffalo VA Medical Center. He was born in the Town of York on August 20, 1927 to the late Harry and Florence (Johnson) Smith. Carl is preceded in death by his beloved wife Ann M. (Sprague) Smith 
 
Along with his wife, Carl is also preceded in death by his sisters; Emily (Ralph) Spaulding and Mary (Calvin) Roblee and brothers William (Margaret) Smith, John (Pauline) Smith and Stanley (Louise) Smith.
 
Prior to his death, he was a resident of the New York State Veteran's Home in Batavia, NY and prior to his retirement he worked as a Heavy Equipment Operator for the New York State Thruway Authority in Batavia. He was Coast Guard Veteran serving in World War Two.  He was also honorably discharged from the Army National Guard at the rank of Staff Sergeant in 1967. He was a member of the Veness Strollo VFW Post 1602.  Carl also served as Special Deputy for the Genesee County Sheriff's Office, served as Constable for the Town of Batavia and was a member of the Genesee County Fair Board. 
 
He survived by his daughters, Nancy Cook of Rochester, Mary Jean (Norman) Brockenshire of Batavia, Bernadette Peters of Rochester; Sister Theresa Rutty of Rochester and Michael (Joan) Rutty of California; a brother Floyd (Dorothy) Smith of California, along with 9 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.  
 
There will be no prior calling hours. A Memorial Service for Mr. Smith will be held at the convenience of the family.
