Stephen J. Baj

Stephen J. Baj., 90, of Akron, died Monday (October 4, 2010) at McAuley Residence in Kenmore after a lengthy illness.

He was born in Buffalo on June 13, 1920, a son of the late Andrew and Aniela Krol Baj.  His wife Eileen Woodard Baj died in 1987.  He served with the US Army in the Rhineland in Central Europe and received a Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster and Combat Infantry Badge.   He was with the 745th Infantry Brigade and achieved the rank of Corporal.  He was a member of St. Teresa of Avila RC Church in Akron and would sell fresh porduce and garden novelties in the Akron area during the seasonal months.

Surviving are his nephews: Frank (Joyce) Gubala of Kenmore, John Gubala of Houston Tesas, Arthur (Elizabeth) Baj of West Seneca and Carl (Sophie) Baj of Buffalo.  Great nephews and great, great nephews also survive.

He was the brother of the late Veronica Gubala who died in July of 2010 and Joseph Baj who died in 1968.

Visitation will be Wednesday from 4 - 8 PM at the J. LEONARD MCANDREW FUNERAL HOME, 32 JOHN ST., AKRON.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be Thursday at 10AM at St. Teresa of Avila RC Church with Rev. Msgr. Robert Williamson as Celebrant.   Burial with full military honors will follow in St. Teresa of Avila Cemetery.
